Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIn a Node.js Lambda function, launch a Lambda-compatible Chromium executable with puppeteer-core, navigate to the target page, wait until the content you need is ready, then call page.screenshot({ type: 'png', fullPage: true }). The example below captures the returned image bytes and sends them in a base64-encoded response; for larger images, upload them to object storage and return a reference instead.
Minimal Lambda handler
This is an illustrative pattern using puppeteer-core and @sparticuz/chromium. It is not a tested deployment recipe: verify the selected package exports, Lambda runtime, CPU architecture, browser version, invocation method, and response limits before deploying.
import puppeteer from 'puppeteer-core';
import chromium from '@sparticuz/chromium';
export const handler = async (event) => {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({
args: chromium.args,
executablePath: await chromium.executablePath(),
headless: true,
});
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto(event.url, { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });
const image = await page.screenshot({ type: 'png', fullPage: true });
return {
statusCode: 200,
headers: { 'content-type': 'image/png' },
isBase64Encoded: true,
body: Buffer.from(image).toString('base64'),
};
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
};
For this package combination, consult Puppeteer’s troubleshooting guidance and the Sparticuz Chromium project documentation. The Chromium package describes extracting runtime files to /tmp on first use; confirm the behavior and architecture support for the exact release you pin.
What makes a screenshot full-page
Page.screenshot() returns image bytes when you do not supply a file path. Its fullPage option defaults to false; set it to true to capture the full page rather than only the viewport. The API also supports options such as type, clip, quality, omitBackground, and captureBeyondViewport. Check the option interactions for your Puppeteer and browser versions before combining full-page capture with clipping or other viewport constraints.

Choose a readiness condition that fits the page
waitUntil: 'networkidle2' is a useful starting example, not a universal guarantee that every visible element is ready. Some sites keep network requests open; others load content after navigation or only when the visitor scrolls. A navigation event alone does not establish that client-rendered or lazy-loaded content has finished appearing.
- For a page with a clear ready state, wait for a known selector or application-specific condition before capturing.
- For lazy-loaded sections, scroll deliberately through the page and allow the relevant images or content to load before taking the screenshot.
- For pages with ongoing network activity, use a site-specific readiness signal rather than waiting indefinitely for network idleness.
These are application-specific choices; Puppeteer’s guide demonstrates networkidle2 but does not prescribe one readiness condition for every site. See Puppeteer’s screenshot guide.
Match Puppeteer, Chromium, and the Lambda runtime
Choose and pin compatible versions rather than assuming the newest browser package works with every runtime or architecture. Puppeteer 25.12.0 documents Node.js 22.12 or later and maps that release to Chrome for Testing 154.0.8037.57. Those are version-specific requirements, not permanent minimums; check the system requirements and supported browsers pages when choosing versions.

Puppeteer’s troubleshooting page points Lambda users to Sparticuz Chromium. The community-maintained Chromium for Serverless Platforms documentation describes support for currently supported AWS Lambda Node.js runtimes. Confirm the selected release’s runtime and architecture instructions; package compatibility can change.
Choose a deployment package format
A full browser dependency can affect artifact size. For standard Lambda deployment options, AWS documents these relevant limits:
| Packaging or upload method | Documented limit | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Zip uploaded directly through the Lambda API or SDK | 50 MB zipped | Use S3 for larger zip artifacts or choose a different packaging route. |
| Zip package including layers | 250 MB unzipped | Count the function package and layers together. |
| Lambda container image | 10 GB uncompressed | Offers more room for browser dependencies and build control, with a container-based deployment workflow. |
These figures are from AWS’s Lambda quotas and Node.js package deployment documentation. Check current AWS limits and your deployment method when packaging.
Set temporary storage, memory, and timeout from measurements
Standard Lambda functions allow configurable memory from 128 MB to 10,240 MB, execution time up to 900 seconds, and /tmp storage from 512 MB to 10,240 MB. AWS states that CPU allocation rises with memory and that 1,769 MB corresponds to one vCPU. These are service limits, not recommended settings for every screenshot.

Chromium extraction and page rendering need temporary disk and memory. Start with enough /tmp capacity for the extracted browser files and artifacts, then measure real target pages to set memory and timeout. Long pages, heavy scripts, and images can change the resource needs. See AWS Lambda quotas and the Sparticuz Chromium documentation.
Return the image or store it outside the invocation
The example base64-encodes the PNG in a synchronous response. AWS lists a 6 MB synchronous request and response payload limit, and supports streamed synchronous responses up to 200 MB subject to the service details. Base64 encoding also increases the body size, so a large screenshot may exceed a response limit before it reaches the caller.
For larger captures or workflows that need durable files, upload the bytes to object storage and return a URL or object key. Keep the browser close in a finally block so navigation and screenshot errors do not bypass cleanup. Verify the response limits for the specific Lambda integration and invocation path you use. See AWS Lambda quotas.
Or skip the browser setup
If you do not want to package and maintain Chromium in Lambda, ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its one-call API returns an image or PDF; the following cURL example requests a WebP screenshot. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options.

Chromium fails to launch
Check that the deployed package has a Lambda-compatible Chromium binary, that its architecture matches the function, and that Puppeteer and Chromium versions are compatible. Confirm the package’s current extraction and runtime instructions, and inspect Lambda logs for the launch error. The relevant references are Puppeteer troubleshooting and the Sparticuz Chromium documentation.
Deployment fails because the package is too large
Compare the zipped and unzipped artifact sizes against the limit for your upload route, including Lambda layers. Use an S3 upload for a zip beyond the direct API/SDK upload limit, reduce packaged dependencies where appropriate, or move to a container image if that better suits the deployment workflow. Check the current Lambda quotas and Node.js package documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Puppeteer return screenshot data as bytes by default?
Yes. Without a path option, page.screenshot() returns screenshot bytes as a Uint8Array.
