Use Chrome DevTools’ Command Menu, not a JavaScript Console export command: open the page, press F12 (or Ctrl+Shift+I/Command+Option+I), press Ctrl+Shift+P (or Command+Shift+P), run Capture full size screenshot, and let Chrome download a PNG of the page beyond the viewport. The Console is useful for checking dimensions and page state first; Chrome’s documented normal-page workflow does not provide a Console command that directly writes the screenshot PNG.
Capture the whole page with Chrome DevTools
- Open the exact URL you want to capture in Chrome desktop.
- Open DevTools with F12, Ctrl+Shift+I on Windows or Linux, or Command+Option+I on macOS.
- Open the DevTools Command Menu with Ctrl+Shift+P on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+P on macOS.
- Type Capture full size screenshot. Select the command when it appears.
- Chrome captures content below the visible viewport and downloads a PNG. The file name and download location follow your normal Chrome download settings.
This is Chrome’s built-in full-page action and requires no extension or physical equipment. It is usually the quickest choice for a one-off capture when you can see the page in a desktop browser.
Why the Console is still useful
The Console can tell you whether the document has actually expanded to its intended size before you capture it. Paste this expression into the Console and press Enter:

})The returned object compares the visible viewport with the full document. A much larger documentHeight is expected on a long page. A larger documentWidth indicates horizontal overflow, which can produce a very wide image. If the height is unexpectedly small, content may still be loading, an accordion may be closed, or an infinite-scroll section may not have been triggered.

Use the Console to inspect state, remove a temporary obstruction, or wait for a page condition; then run Capture full size screenshot from the Command Menu. Do not mistake JavaScript that reads dimensions for a screenshot exporter: the documented user-facing PNG action is the DevTools command.
Prepare dynamic pages before you capture
Wait for images and client-rendered content
Allow the page to finish its initial load before opening the Command Menu. On a single-page application, wait until the route’s content, charts and fonts are visible. If the page uses lazy-loaded images, scroll through it once so images that depend on an intersection with the viewport have a chance to load, then return to the top and capture. Inspect the resulting PNG rather than assuming every below-the-fold asset was ready.
Handle cookie banners, dialogs and sticky controls
Dismiss consent dialogs, sign-in prompts and newsletter overlays before capture. A fixed header or chat bubble can repeat or obscure content in a tall image. If you cannot dismiss an element, use DevTools to identify whether it is part of the page layout and test a temporary hide rule in the Elements panel; capture only after confirming that the alteration does not remove content you need.
Check frames and embedded documents
An embedded frame can have its own scrollable area. The top-level full-size capture does not guarantee that every independently scrolling frame is expanded. If an iframe contains important material, open its source URL separately and capture it, or use an automation workflow that can target the frame.
Watch for unusually tall documents
Very long pages can create extremely large PNGs and take longer to encode or download. Check the geometry expression first. If the page is an endless feed, capture a deliberate stopping point instead of waiting for the document to grow without limit.

Headless Chrome from a terminal
For repeatable captures without opening a visible browser, Chrome’s headless mode accepts a URL and writes a PNG:
chrome --headless --screenshot --window-size=412,892 https://example.comThis command saves screenshot.png in the current directory. The window size controls the virtual viewport; it does not mean the resulting image is automatically a full document if the page has not laid out all of its content. Chrome documents two useful timing controls:
--timeoutwaits a specified amount of time before capture.--virtual-time-budgetgives time-dependent pages a virtual execution budget.
Use a delay when JavaScript needs time to render, but keep it bounded so a broken request cannot make an automated job wait forever. The headless reference describing these options was updated on 2024-10-21 UTC, so check the flags against the Chrome version installed in your environment.

Automate with the DevTools Protocol
Browser automation frameworks can call the DevTools Protocol method Page.captureScreenshot. Set captureBeyondViewport to true to request content beyond the current viewport. A protocol client sends a message like this after navigating to the page and waiting for its application state to settle:

This route is intended for scripts, test harnesses and browser automation rather than a command pasted into an ordinary page Console. Build in explicit waits for the content you care about, and record the URL, viewport and wait condition with each artifact so a later capture can be reproduced.

Troubleshooting full-page captures
The command is missing
Make sure focus is inside DevTools when you press the Command Menu shortcut. Type the complete phrase Capture full size screenshot, not “full page” alone. If you are using a browser other than desktop Chrome, the command name and availability may differ.
The PNG stops before the bottom
Run the geometry expression again. If documentHeight is short, wait for client-rendered content, expand collapsed sections, or trigger lazy loading by scrolling. If the measured document is tall but the output is short, retry after the page settles and check whether a nested scrolling container—not the document itself—holds the missing content.

Images are blank or missing
Lazy images may not have loaded when the capture started. Scroll through the page, wait for placeholders to become images, and capture again. A failed image request or an image inside a cross-origin frame may require opening the asset’s page separately.
A banner or chat widget covers the content
Dismiss the control before invoking the capture. For a stubborn overlay, identify its selector in Elements and test a temporary hide declaration, then reload the page for a clean, repeatable state. Do not hide an element if it contains information that belongs in the screenshot.
The page is wider than expected
Compare documentWidth with viewportWidth. Horizontal overflow often comes from a wide table, an unwrapped code block or an off-screen element. Fix the layout if you control the page; otherwise, record that the capture includes the overflow rather than silently cropping it.

The headless result differs from the visible browser
Use the same viewport dimensions, wait for the same application state and ensure the headless process has access to required authentication and network resources. Dynamic ads, timers and personalized content can legitimately change between runs. The official guidance does not promise identical rendering for every layout, so compare the actual files when pixel-level consistency matters.
