Chrome’s built-in headless --screenshot flag is simpler for a viewport-sized image, but its documented command pairs the capture with a configured window size; it does not discover the page’s full height for you.

Chrome’s command-line reference documents --screenshot with --window-size; the Chrome Headless Shell documentation notes that full-page screenshots take additional steps (Chrome Headless command-line reference; Headless Chrome shell).
Quick capture with Chrome’s headless command
Use this when a viewport-sized capture is sufficient or you know the page height you want to capture:
chrome --headless --screenshot=page.png --window-size=1280,900 --timeout=10000 'https://example.com'The command saves page.png in the current working directory. The --window-size value sets the browser window dimensions; use a deliberately tall height only when that is appropriate for the page. This option does not measure the document and automatically extend the capture to its full height. Chrome’s --timeout sets the maximum wait in milliseconds before capture, even if loading continues; it does not confirm that all scripts or lazy content have finished.

Adjust the command for your system
- Replace
chromewith the executable name or full path used by your installation. - Change
--screenshot=page.pngto set the output filename or path. - Set
--window-size=WIDTH,HEIGHTto control the capture dimensions. - Keep the URL quoted, especially if it contains shell-sensitive characters. Quote or escape output paths that contain spaces.
Capture the full document with Puppeteer
Puppeteer drives Chrome and exposes an explicit full-page setting. The following script accepts a URL as its first argument, uses a deliberate viewport width, waits for navigation to reach networkidle2, writes full-page.png, and closes the browser even if navigation or capture fails.
Install Puppeteer
In a working Node.js project, install Puppeteer if it is not already available:

Run it
node capture.mjs 'https://example.com'The resulting image is written to full-page.png in the current working directory. Change the screenshot path in the script to use a different filename or destination.
Wait for dynamic and lazy-loaded content
networkidle2 is a practical navigation wait, not a guarantee that every site is finished rendering. Pages with lazy-loaded images, animations, ongoing network activity, or content that appears after interaction may need a site-specific wait. A fixed Chrome timeout likewise limits how long Chrome waits; reaching it does not prove that asynchronous work is complete.
- If a page exposes a dependable element that appears when the main content is ready, wait for that element before taking the screenshot.
- If content loads as the reader scrolls, scroll through the page before capture so lazy-loaded sections have a chance to render.
- If the page updates continuously, choose a relevant readiness condition rather than expecting a generic network-idle wait to settle it.
There is no universal wait duration that guarantees complete content on every website. The right condition depends on how that page loads.

Troubleshooting
Shell says the Chrome command cannot be found
The executable is not available under the name chrome in your shell, or Chrome is installed in a location not on the command path. Use the executable name or full path for your operating system and installation.
The screenshot shows only the top portion
The built-in command captures the configured window rather than discovering the document’s full height. Use Puppeteer with fullPage: true; if you must use Chrome’s CLI, a tall window can approximate the page only when you know the height you need.

The image is blank, incomplete, or missing images
The page may not have finished rendering when capture began. Increase the available wait where appropriate and, for dynamic pages, wait for a page-specific readiness signal. If images load on scroll, scroll through the document before capture.

Puppeteer reports a navigation timeout
The page may keep network connections open or take longer than the script’s 30-second navigation limit. Choose a wait condition suited to the site and adjust the timeout if a longer load is expected. A timeout should not be treated as proof that the page is ready to capture.
The script says the URL is missing
Pass a URL after the script name and quote it, for example node capture.mjs 'https://example.com'.
