Capture a full page in Chrome DevTools

Open the webpage in Chrome, then open DevTools.

Turn on the Device toolbar. In the dimensions control, select Responsive.

Enter the target viewport width and height in pixels. Chrome’s documentation illustrates custom dimensions with 480 by 415 pixels; use the dimensions you need for your capture.

Choose the device type—Mobile, Mobile no touch, Desktop, or Desktop touch—and set the device pixel ratio (DPR) if output pixel density matters.

Open More options > Capture a full size screenshot. Choose this rather than Capture screenshot, which captures only the visible viewport.
Chrome’s Device Mode guide documents the responsive dimensions, device types and full-size capture command. Device Mode is an approximation: it does not run the page on physical mobile hardware.
Choose settings for the mobile layout you need
Width and height define the emulated viewport, but they may not fully determine how a page behaves. Responsive rules or scripts can also respond to touch support, user agent, device pixel ratio, and the page’s viewport metadata. Match those settings when the purpose of the screenshot requires them.

- Device type: Choose a mobile mode when you need mobile rendering or mobile interaction behavior, rather than assuming a narrow desktop viewport is equivalent.
- DPR: Set the device pixel ratio when the pixel density of the resulting image matters. The screenshot’s pixel dimensions can differ from its CSS-pixel viewport dimensions.
- Touch and user agent: Match these when the page changes its layout or behavior based on them. Chrome’s custom device settings support user-agent and DPR fields, as well as dimensions and device type.
For behavior that depends on actual phone hardware, sensors, or a specific browser on a device, test on that device. DevTools emulation is not a substitute for physical-device execution.

Automate repeatable full-page captures
Use browser automation when you need to repeat a capture or make it part of a test workflow. The essential order is to set the emulated viewport and device properties, navigate, wait for meaningful page content, and then take the full-page screenshot. Pages that load content only after scrolling or interaction may need those actions before capture; screenshot options alone do not guarantee that deferred content has loaded.
Playwright
Playwright supports device configurations and per-test viewport overrides. Its screenshot API’s fullPage option captures the full scrollable page, and scale selects CSS-pixel or device-pixel-ratio output. The following runnable Node.js example uses a custom mobile viewport and saves the full page:

Puppeteer
Puppeteer’s screenshot options include fullPage: true, and its API also documents captureBeyondViewport. Here is a complete Node.js example that sets a mobile viewport before capturing:

Chrome DevTools Protocol
For lower-level browser control, the Chrome DevTools Protocol provides Emulation.setDeviceMetricsOverride for screen dimensions and mobile behavior, and Page.captureScreenshot for capture parameters such as format, clip, and captureBeyondViewport. Consult the protocol definitions for device metric overrides and page screenshots.
Troubleshoot missing or unexpected content
- The image stops at the viewport: In DevTools, use Capture a full size screenshot, not Capture screenshot. In automation, enable the full-page option, such as Playwright’s
fullPage: trueor Puppeteer’sfullPage: true. - The page looks like desktop squeezed into a narrow image: Check that you selected a mobile device type or enabled mobile emulation. Confirm the page’s viewport metadata and responsive rules, too.
- Buttons or menus behave differently: Check touch support and device type; a viewport width by itself does not reproduce every mobile interaction.
- Text or images appear at the wrong pixel density: Check the DPR and the screenshot scale. In Playwright,
scale: 'css'produces CSS-pixel sizing, whilescale: 'device'uses device-pixel-ratio output. - Content lower on the page is absent: The page may load it only after scrolling or interaction. Trigger the needed behavior and wait for the content before capture.
- The screenshot differs from a real phone: DevTools emulates a mobile environment; it does not execute on physical mobile hardware. Verify device-specific behavior on the actual device when that distinction matters.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I capture only the visible mobile screen instead of the whole page?
Yes. In Chrome DevTools choose Capture screenshot rather than Capture a full size screenshot.
Does a full-page screenshot make the whole webpage fit inside the chosen viewport height?
No. The viewport sets the emulated window dimensions; a full-page capture extends the image to include page content beyond that window.
