To sync a save between Xbox and PC, make sure the game supports Xbox Play Anywhere, sign into the same Xbox/Microsoft account on both devices, and let cloud synchronization finish before switching devices. Having a game version on both platforms alone does not establish that its saves will roam between them.
What Xbox Play Anywhere syncs
Xbox Play Anywhere is a digital-game program. A supported purchase from the Xbox Store or Windows Store can be played on supported Xbox consoles, Windows 10 or Windows 11 PCs, and supported gaming handhelds at no additional cost. Sign in with the Xbox/Microsoft account used to access the game. See Xbox Play Anywhere for the current program and device details.
Microsoft says progress for a Play Anywhere game is saved with your gamertag, so you can continue on another device after signing in to that account. The account—and therefore the gamertag—must match on both devices. Microsoft’s Usage rules for Digital Goods describe this behavior.
How to sync a save between Xbox and PC
- Confirm Play Anywhere eligibility. Check the individual game’s Xbox or Windows Store listing for the Xbox Play Anywhere designation. Do not assume a game shares saves just because it has separate Xbox and PC versions.
- Use the same account on both devices. Sign in to the Xbox console and the Windows Xbox app or supported PC device with the same Xbox/Microsoft account and gamertag used for the game.
- Launch the game on the device where you want to continue. Install it if needed, then let the title connect and complete its cloud-save synchronization. Avoid closing the game or opening it on the other device while a sync is still in progress.
- Check the sync status where available. Xbox announced a Game Save Sync Indicator rollout in January 2026 to show cloud-save status on PC or supported handhelds. It may not appear on every device or configuration; see the January 21, 2026 Xbox Wire update.
If progress does not appear on the other device
Work through these checks in order. The precise recovery steps can vary by game, so do not delete local saves or force an overwrite unless that game’s official support guidance tells you to.

- Recheck the title and edition. Confirm the exact game listing identifies it as Play Anywhere and that you are launching the supported edition.
- Verify account identity. Confirm both devices use the same Microsoft/Xbox account and gamertag—not just accounts with similar profile details.
- Allow synchronization to finish. Keep the game open while it completes its cloud sync, and check the Game Save Sync Indicator if it is available on your PC or handheld.
- Ask the game’s publisher or developer. Microsoft’s developer policy recommends save roaming between Windows PCs and Xbox consoles for games sharing a TitleID in the relevant scenario, but does not require it. That policy does not establish a problem with any particular title; consult its official listing or support page for game-specific behavior. How many games support Play Anywhere?
Xbox said on January 21, 2026 that more than 1,000 games supported Play Anywhere. This is a dated count, not a fixed total; check the current Xbox Play Anywhere catalog for eligible titles.
