To keep your place, open the same book in the same reading service on each device, sign in with the same account, enable that service’s sync settings, and connect to the internet so it can send and retrieve updates. Kindle, Apple Books, and Kobo each document syncing within their own ecosystems; the official instructions do not establish automatic progress syncing between unrelated services such as Kindle and Apple Books.
What reading-progress sync does—and what it does not
When supported, a service saves your reading position to its cloud account and makes it available to your other linked devices or apps. Kindle’s sync can also save notes and highlights; Apple Books uses iCloud and Books settings; Kobo describes automatic progress syncing between a Kobo eReader and the Kobo Books app.
This is not a universal ebook standard. A reading position saved in one provider’s app should not be assumed to appear in a competing provider’s app. Nor do the support pages establish that every sideloaded file, borrowed title, or book obtained from another source will sync. Check support for the specific book and service combination you use.
Before troubleshooting, check the basics
- Same service: Make sure each device is opening the book in the same provider’s app or device ecosystem.
- Same account: Confirm that the devices are signed in to the account that owns or provides access to the book. Amazon ties Kindle syncing to devices linked to the account, and Apple instructs users to sign in to the same Apple Account. Amazon’s Kindle library guidance also recommends checking Wi-Fi and tapping Sync when Kindle titles are missing; that is a basic library check, not a guaranteed fix for every position mismatch.
- Internet connection: Connect the device before syncing. Amazon states that an internet connection is required for Kindle Sync to work.
- Sync setting: Check that sync is enabled on the relevant app, device, or account. Avoid turning it off and back on casually if you have unsynced notes or highlights.
- Book availability: Verify that the same title is available in the service on both devices, rather than assuming access on one means it is available on the other.
Sync progress in Kindle
Amazon says Kindle Sync saves reading position, notes, and highlights to its servers and shares saved data among Kindle apps and devices linked to the same account. Sync is on by default according to Amazon’s current support page, but you can inspect the setting if progress is not updating. An internet connection is required.

Check Kindle sync settings
Use the sync setting in the Kindle app, Kindle e-reader, or Amazon account preferences. The exact menu can vary by app or device version; Amazon’s Update Your Sync Settings for Kindle page provides the applicable paths and explains the setting. If sync has been disabled, Amazon says automatic server saving stops. Notes, highlights, and bookmarks made while it is off may be lost when sync is restored, so preserve anything important before changing the setting.
Run a manual sync on a Kindle e-reader
- Connect the Kindle e-reader to the internet.
- Open Quick Actions or Menu, depending on the device.
- Choose Sync or Sync and Check for Items.
Amazon says this backs up the furthest page read. Its Kindle e-reader sync instructions give the device steps.

Sync progress in Apple Books
Apple Books uses iCloud to keep books and reading information available across devices signed in to the same Apple Account. If your place is missing, Apple recommends checking the account, iCloud Drive, Books settings, storage, and the book’s download or visibility status.
- Confirm that each device is signed in to the same Apple Account.
- In iCloud settings, make sure iCloud Drive and Books are enabled.
- Check the Books app settings for Home and iCloud Drive, or the corresponding options on Mac.
- Check that the device has available storage and that the book is downloaded and not hidden.
Apple’s Books troubleshooting guidance describes the relevant settings. Menu labels may differ across Apple operating-system versions.

Sync progress in Kobo
Kobo says progress automatically syncs between a Kobo eReader and the Kobo Books app when you read the same book. If the displayed locations disagree, sync both the eReader and the app, then check the book again. See Kobo’s instructions for reading across devices.
If your place still does not match
- Confirm the book and account on both devices. Make sure you have not switched providers, accounts, editions, or copies of the title.
- Get both devices online. A device that has been offline cannot send or retrieve a newer position until it reconnects.
- Run the provider’s manual sync. On Kindle e-readers, use Sync or Sync and Check for Items. On Kobo, sync both the eReader and Kobo Books app.
- Inspect the sync and cloud settings. For Kindle, check the sync setting on the app or device and in account preferences. For Apple Books, verify the iCloud Drive and Books toggles, storage, and the book’s download or hidden status.
- Protect unsynced annotations. If Kindle sync was off, do not assume notes, highlights, or bookmarks created during that period will be recovered when you re-enable it.
If these checks do not resolve the mismatch, the official instructions cited here do not identify one universal cause or fix. Check the provider’s current help page for the specific device, app version, and book involved.

Choosing a setup for reading across devices
Before relying on cross-device continuity, check whether your service supports the devices you plan to use, whether that exact book is available on each one, whether it syncs position as well as annotations, which account and cloud settings it requires, and whether you need an internet connection to exchange updates. The cited provider instructions describe their own ecosystems; they do not provide a controlled performance comparison or establish a universal cross-service standard.
