For tabs and browsing history, also turn on History and tabs on each device. Once enabled, find another device’s open tabs in Chrome’s history on a computer or in Recent tabs on Android.
Before you start: sign in to Chrome on each device
Use the same Google Account in the Chrome browser on every device. Signing in to a Google website is not the same as signing in to Chrome; the browser must be signed in for Chrome data to be saved to the account. When Chrome is signed out, bookmarks and other information stay on that device. Google explains how Chrome sign-in works.
After signing in, review which information Chrome is set to save. If bookmarks or passwords were created locally while you were signed out, look for the Save in account option to add existing local information to your Google Account. The control may appear as you sign in or in Chrome’s account settings. Google’s computer instructions describe the account-saving controls.
Turn on sync for bookmarks, passwords, and tabs
On a computer
- Open Chrome and select More > Settings > You and Google.
- Select the account name and choose which information to save to your Google Account.
- Turn on History and tabs if you want open tabs and browsing history available across devices.
To open a tab from another device, select More > History > Tabs from other devices. To find saved passwords, go to More > Passwords and autofill > Google Password Manager. To view bookmarks, open Bookmarks and lists > Show all bookmarks. See Google’s Chrome guide for computers.

Choose between standard sync and a custom passphrase
Chrome encrypts information sent to Google in transit. You can optionally set a custom sync passphrase so that Chrome data protected by it is unreadable to Google. You must enter the passphrase on devices when signing in, including devices already signed in. Google Wallet payment methods and addresses are not encrypted by the Chrome passphrase. Google’s explanation of Chrome sign-in and sync describes the setting and its effects.
A custom passphrase also limits some features: history will not be fully saved to the Google Account, and saved passwords cannot be checked at passwords.google.com while the passphrase is in use. Use it if the added privacy is worth the extra setup and feature limits; standard Chrome encryption does not have those passphrase-specific trade-offs.

Read this before resetting a passphrase
Changing or removing a custom passphrase is not a harmless password change. Google says the reset deletes the data encrypted by that passphrase from its servers and signs devices out. Export passwords first if you need to keep using them after a reset. See the recovery guidance in Google’s computer instructions and Android instructions.

If Web & App Activity, including its Chrome subsetting, is enabled, Chrome history saved to your Google Account may be used to personalize other Google products and services. You can manage Web & App Activity and Chrome data in your Google Account controls. Incognito browsing does not sign you in to Chrome, although you can separately sign in to Google websites in an Incognito window. Google’s sign-in guide explains these account distinctions.
