Sync the entire Obsidian vault with one sync method, keeping its atlas-vtt folder and attachment files in place. Let syncing finish before opening the campaign on another device. For ordinary file moves, use Obsidian’s file explorer; to move an Atlas item between collections, use Atlas’s Asset Manager. Then check a scene and key links on the receiving device.

What needs to sync for an Atlas campaign?

An Obsidian vault is a folder containing your notes and an .obsidian configuration folder. Atlas stores its data inside that vault in atlas-vtt, with collection folders under atlas-vtt/collections. Sync the complete vault rather than selecting only your Markdown notes, so Atlas data and related files travel with them. See Obsidian’s explanation of vaults and Atlas’s file and collection guide.

Attachments are files too. Obsidian can place them at the vault root, in a chosen folder, or in a folder relative to the current note. Keep the configured attachment location within the synced vault unless you have confirmed another arrangement works for your setup. Otherwise, a note may arrive without the image or other file it links to. See Obsidian’s attachment guidance.

Choose one sync method

Obsidian describes two broad approaches: Obsidian Sync connects local vaults through an app-managed remote vault; file-based services monitor folders and copy files between local vaults. Choose one method for a given vault. Obsidian warns that syncing the same vault with multiple services can cause conflicts or corruption. In particular, do not put a local vault managed by Obsidian Sync inside a third-party sync folder. The options and warning are documented in Obsidian’s vault types guide and sync overview.

Approach How it works Practical consideration
Obsidian Sync Obsidian’s app syncs local vault copies with a remote vault. Use it as the vault’s sole sync method; do not nest its local vault in another sync service’s folder.
File-based sync service A service monitors folders and copies files between local vaults. Ensure each local vault is in the folder the service monitors, and do not run a second sync tool against it.
Git Obsidian lists Git as a sync approach. Push and pull are manual, so account for those steps when moving between devices.

These descriptions do not establish that every provider, device combination, or configuration preserves every Atlas behavior. Treat your second copy as unverified until you check it.

Set up and sync the vault

  1. Make an independent backup. Do this before changing sync providers, vault locations, symlinks, or many paths. Sync is not a backup. Obsidian warns that symlinks may not work well with sync tools and can bring conflict, data-loss, or corruption risks; see its symlink guidance.
  2. Confirm the local vault is complete. Check that the vault folder contains atlas-vtt and that the campaign’s attachments are in their configured locations within the vault.
  3. Configure one sync method. For Obsidian Sync, connect each local vault copy to the remote vault. For a file-based service, place each local vault in the monitored folder. Avoid managing the same vault through both.
  4. Wait for the first device to finish syncing before editing on another device. Obsidian identifies edits made to the same file on multiple devices before they sync—often after offline work—as a cause of conflicts. This wait is a practical way to reduce that risk, not a guarantee against conflicts. See Obsidian’s conflict guidance.
  5. On the receiving device, verify the copy. Check that atlas-vtt and representative collection files arrived. Open a representative scene and follow several important Obsidian links. This is a practical check based on Atlas’s documented file layout; official documentation does not establish a universal compatibility test for every sync service and platform.

Move files without confusing Atlas collections

For an ordinary rename or file move

Use Obsidian’s file explorer and keep automatic internal-link updates enabled if you want Obsidian to update its own links when a file is renamed. Obsidian documents this behavior in its internal-link guidance. Atlas separately says it follows files renamed or moved in Obsidian’s file explorer. Its guide states: “You can rename and move these files in Obsidian’s file explorer. Atlas follows the change and keeps your scenes working.” — Atlas VTT documentation, “Move and copy between collections”.

To move or copy an item between Atlas collections

Use Atlas’s Asset Manager and its Move to Collection or Copy to Collection controls instead of treating a collection change as an ordinary file move. Atlas scene links are collection-specific: a note pin can open another scene only within the same collection. When moving or copying, Atlas lets you bring linked scenes along or proceed without them; choosing the option without links removes those links. Review that choice before confirming. See Atlas’s move and copy guide.

Handle conflicts and broken links

Conflict behavior depends on the file type. Obsidian Sync merges Markdown using Google’s diff-match-patch algorithm; for other file types it uses last-modified-wins. That is not a promise that every conflict will be merged cleanly. Obsidian’s troubleshooting guide says, “A conflict happens when you change the same file on two or more devices before they sync.” See the guide for its conflict-handling details.

  • Two 64-Page Character Journals
  • Books measure 4.75" x 7.5"
  • Pages contain fields for game information, character data, and level-by-level notes
  • If you use Obsidian Sync: consider enabling its create-conflict-file option on each device if you want to review both versions. The setting is device-specific.
  • Review conflicts: inspect the sync log and manually compare or merge conflict files where needed.
  • If an Obsidian link breaks after a rename: check whether automatic internal-link updating was enabled and whether the destination file arrived in the synced vault.
  • If an Atlas scene link breaks after a collection change: check whether the item was moved with Atlas’s Asset Manager and whether linked scenes were included.
  • If images or other embeds are missing: check that the referenced attachment files and their folders arrived in the vault.

Obsidian links and Atlas scene links are separate systems. Obsidian can update its internal links on rename; Atlas documents its own file tracking and collection-specific scene-link behavior. The reviewed Atlas guidance does not require switching from wikilinks to Markdown links. Obsidian supports both and notes Markdown links may be useful when interoperability matters; see its internal-link documentation.
