To switch videos without ending your YouTube live event, keep OBS sending one continuous encoder feed and change the active content inside OBS. Prepare a scene for each video, then switch scenes while the encoder remains connected. YouTube treats stopping the encoder’s content as ending the stream, so stopping and restarting OBS for every video is not the right routine for a continuous event.
What “without a gap” means
The goal is to keep the same YouTube live event and encoder connection active while the video shown in that feed changes. OBS scenes provide a way to change what the encoder sends: OBS documents scene transitions, quick transitions, and configured hotkeys. Combining those controls with YouTube’s encoder workflow supports this method, but it is not a special gapless-switch feature provided by YouTube.
A scene change can still include the transition you choose. If you need a hard cut rather than a visible fade or other transition, check the selected transition in OBS and inspect the outgoing feed before relying on it. The official guidance cited here does not establish exact transition settings for a particular OBS version.
Set up one continuous YouTube event
- Create or schedule the event. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live stream and retrieve its stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe entering these in the encoder’s server and stream-key fields.
- Configure OBS to send to that event. Enter the YouTube stream URL and key in the corresponding encoder fields. Treat the stream key as a credential: it authorizes an encoder to send the feed, so do not share it publicly.
- Prepare the content changes in OBS. Arrange the rerun videos so each intended video can be shown by switching to its scene, or otherwise arrange the content so you can make the required change with OBS’s scene controls. OBS’s overview guide explains scenes, transitions, quick transitions, and hotkeys.
- Start the encoder and verify the preview. Begin sending the feed and confirm that YouTube receives it in the live preview before proceeding with the event, following YouTube’s encoder workflow.
- Switch the content, not the connection. At each changeover, use the OBS scene transition or configured hotkey to show the next video. Leave the encoder output running and keep the same YouTube event active.
Choose a changeover method
| Method | What happens | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Switch OBS scenes while the encoder stays live | The active content changes within the feed; the YouTube encoder connection remains running. | The appropriate routine for changing videos while keeping one live event continuous. |
| Stop and restart the encoder for each video | You stop sending content, which YouTube identifies as the way to end a stream. | Not appropriate when the aim is one continuous live event. |
| Trigger a configured OBS hotkey | A keyboard shortcut can switch the active scene; OBS also documents quick transitions. | Useful when you want a direct manual trigger. A normal keyboard shortcut is sufficient; dedicated shortcut hardware is optional, not required by the cited OBS guidance. |
Check file playback and unattended changes in your OBS version
Scene switching and encoder continuity do not by themselves establish how a particular media source will restart, loop, or advance to the next file. The official sources cited here do not specify those media-source options or a guaranteed automatic playlist configuration. Before leaving a rerun unattended, verify the installed OBS version’s media-source behavior with the actual files and confirm that the next scene or item appears as intended.

Understand YouTube settings that affect viewers
YouTube defines stream latency as the delay between capture and playback. Its settings guidance notes that lower latency may increase buffering. This affects how quickly viewers see the feed; it does not control OBS scene changes.
YouTube’s DVR option lets viewers pause and rewind. It is a viewer playback feature, not a way to switch OBS content or remove a gap in the encoder feed. Also, YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that is an archive detail, not a switching method or a guarantee of gap-free playback.

Troubleshoot a changeover
- The live event ends at a video change: Check whether OBS stopped sending its output. Switch the active scene without stopping the encoder; YouTube’s encoder instructions say to end a stream by stopping content from the encoder.
- The new video does not appear: Check that the intended OBS scene is active and that the outgoing feed shows it. Recheck the scene arrangement and transition controls before the next changeover.
- A file finishes but playback does not continue as expected: Verify the media-source restart, loop, and next-item behavior in the OBS version installed. The cited official guides do not establish a universal checkbox or automation recipe for this.
- YouTube does not receive the encoder feed: Recheck the stream URL and stream key in the encoder fields against the event’s settings, then follow YouTube’s encoder preview workflow.
- Viewers report delay or buffering: Review YouTube’s latency setting with the trade-off in mind: lower latency can mean more buffering. This is separate from scene switching.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the rerun is uploaded video rather than a camera feed, StreamNeo is an alternative for keeping a YouTube channel live from the cloud. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; StreamNeo plays the uploaded video, not a live camera feed.
Every slot streams what you upload at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
