Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →You can stream to YouTube without leaving your PC on, but the right setup depends on what you mean by “switch videos.” For scheduled playback of prerecorded files, YouTube lists the standalone AJA HELO Plus and its PlayToStream feature. For manually switching between connected HDMI devices, use a hardware switcher such as the ATEM Mini Pro—and connect a separate device to play the video files. The available product descriptions do not establish that either device lets you freely pick any stored file on demand during a live stream.
First decide what you need to switch
There are two different jobs that can sound like “switching videos”:
- Scheduled playback: Arrange prerecorded media to play during a stream, without choosing files spontaneously while live.
- Live source switching: Choose among connected cameras or other HDMI sources while the broadcast is running. A video file needs a playback device connected as one of those sources.
A device that encodes and streams video is not necessarily a video-file player, and a switcher is not necessarily a file player. Confirm that the exact workflow you want is supported before buying hardware.
Choose a setup for your workflow
| What you want to do | Option | What it supports | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Schedule prerecorded media to stream without a computer | AJA HELO Plus | YouTube describes it as a standalone H.264 encoder and says its PlayToStream feature can schedule prerecorded media to stream directly to YouTube Live without a computer. | The cited description does not confirm choosing arbitrary stored files on demand during an active stream. Verify playback controls and supported media workflow with the manufacturer. |
| Switch between connected HDMI sources and stream from hardware | Blackmagic Design ATEM Mini Pro | Blackmagic lists four HDMI inputs, a hardware streaming engine, recording, and transitions. | The product description does not say the switcher plays video files. Connect a separate playback device to an input for file-based video. |
| Run a mobile production setup with an iPad | Roland AeroCaster | Roland describes an iPad app and hardware control surface for switching cameras, media, and scenes, with streaming to YouTube over Wi-Fi or cellular. | This uses an iPad and potentially other mobile devices; it is not a self-contained scheduled-playback encoder. |
Set up scheduled prerecorded playback
If you want files to play according to a schedule without a PC, investigate the AJA HELO Plus PlayToStream workflow. YouTube’s guide describes the feature, but does not establish that it provides spontaneous, live selection among stored files. Before purchasing, confirm supported file formats, how schedules are created or changed, and whether the controls match your intended operation.

Switch between HDMI sources while live
A hardware switcher and encoder can move the broadcast between connected inputs. With an ATEM Mini Pro setup, a separate computer, media player, or other compatible playback source must supply any prerecorded video over HDMI; the reviewed product information does not establish file playback by the ATEM itself.
- Connect each camera or other video source to an HDMI input on the switcher.
- Connect the device that will play video files to another HDMI input. Confirm its output resolution and format are compatible with the switcher.
- Configure the switcher’s streaming settings with YouTube’s server URL and stream key. YouTube explains that an encoder converts video into a digital format for streaming; follow the hardware manufacturer’s setup instructions for its controls.
- Start the stream from the encoder or switcher. In YouTube Live Control Room, wait for the preview, then select Go live.
- Use the switcher controls to change between connected inputs. To show a different file, operate the connected playback device; the switcher changes inputs, not the file selected on that device.
Use an iPad-based mobile setup
Roland’s AeroCaster combines an iPad app and hardware control surface for switching cameras, media, and scenes, and can stream to YouTube over Wi-Fi or cellular. It may suit a mobile production rig when an iPad-based workflow is acceptable. Its description does not establish a self-contained schedule for playing prerecorded files without operator devices.

Configure YouTube and check account readiness
YouTube’s encoder setup guide says to enter the YouTube Live server URL and stream key in the encoder, start the encoder, wait for the preview in Live Control Room, and then select Go live. YouTube notes that enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours; this is account- and setup-dependent, so check the current Help instructions for your channel.
- Keep the stream key private; anyone who has it may be able to send video to your stream.
- Confirm your channel can go live before an event, rather than discovering an account or setup restriction at broadcast time.
- Use media you have the rights to stream. A live broadcast can still be subject to copyright rules and YouTube enforcement.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
- No preview appears in Live Control Room: Check that the encoder is running and that its server URL and stream key match the YouTube stream. Verify the hardware’s network connection and status indicators.
- The stream is connected, but the wrong video appears: Confirm the switcher is on the intended input and that the playback device is actually outputting video over HDMI.
- A video file will not play as scheduled: Check the device’s supported media workflow and schedule controls with the manufacturer. Do not assume that a feature described for scheduled playback also permits live, on-demand file selection.
- A switcher cannot open a stored file: A switcher selects among incoming sources; provide a separate device that can play the file into an input.
- You cannot start a first-ever live stream: YouTube says initial enablement can take up to 24 hours. Check channel readiness and current YouTube guidance in advance.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a prerecorded YouTube stream that keeps running without a PC, StreamNeo is a cloud option rather than a hardware switcher. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos; it does not go live from a camera, and it is for YouTube only.
