How do I switch phone carriers and keep my number?
Number porting is the process that moves your existing phone number to a new provider. The receiving carrier submits the request; your current carrier validates the information, and the providers coordinate the transfer. The FCC describes number porting as a way for customers to retain their numbers when switching providers. FCC Order 23-95
The FCC says customers can keep an existing number when they switch providers and remain in the same geographic area. That general rule does not confirm that a particular carrier can accept every number for every service or location, so verify your specific number with the carrier you plan to join. 1. Confirm that the new carrier can accept your number
Before ordering service, ask the new carrier whether your number can be ported to the service and location you want. Ask it to explain its current porting and activation process, including when to follow its instructions for using the new service.

2. Get the details the new carrier needs
For a wireless-to-wireless port, the FCC identifies these details:
- The phone number you want to keep
- Your current account number
- The five-digit ZIP code on the current account
- Any customer-assigned passcode, if you have one
Copy the information from your current account records and check it carefully before submitting it. The receiving carrier uses it to send the port request, and the current carrier validates the request. FCC Order 23-95

3. Ask the new carrier to initiate the port
Give the information to the new carrier and ask it to start the transfer. Follow that carrier’s current instructions for activation, and ask for an estimate of how long the process will take. The sources here do not establish a universal completion time or port fee, so get timing and any account-specific charges directly from the providers.
4. Check your account obligations and charges
Review your current account and ask your providers whether you have a remaining device balance, contract obligation, unpaid bill, port fee, or other charge. The amount and applicability depend on your account; there is no universal cost established here.

Will my current phone work with the new carrier?
Keeping your number and using your existing handset are separate questions. An unlocked phone might work on a new carrier, but unlocking alone does not guarantee that the device is compatible with that carrier’s network. Check the exact phone model with the new provider and ask whether the handset is unlocked and supported. FCC consumer guidance
How do I protect my number and accounts during the switch?
A fraudulent port-out can let someone take control of your number and receive its calls and texts. Protect your carrier account, and consider strengthening the sign-in methods for sensitive services that rely on text messages for verification. FCC Order 23-95 FTC guidance on SIM-swap scams

- Do not provide account details in response to an unsolicited request.
- Where a sensitive service offers them, consider an authenticator app or security key instead of relying only on text-message codes.
What should I do with my old phone if I trade it in or give it away?
Preparing a handset for trade-in or disposal is separate from transferring its number. The FTC recommends backing up the device, removing SIM and SD cards, and erasing personal information before you hand it over. A SIM may be transferable when you keep the same number, so ask your carrier what to do with your particular SIM rather than assuming you need to buy a new one. FTC phone-preparation guidance
