Menu names vary by phone. Your device-stored SMS history is separate from app-specific features, and RCS chats may not work the same way in another app.
Change your default SMS app
- Install and open the messaging app you want to use, if it is not already installed. Check that it supports the features you need, especially carrier SMS/MMS and any RCS features you rely on.
- Open Settings → Apps → Default apps → SMS app.
- Select the replacement app. Some apps also offer a prompt during setup that takes you to the same default-app choice. Android labels and paths can vary by manufacturer and version. Google’s setup instructions describe changing the default app.
- Send a test text and check that incoming messages arrive in the app you selected.
Will your text history carry over?
Google says SMS messages are stored in the device’s SMS database and other apps may be able to access them. Google Messages can display text history when it becomes the default app, while new texts are handled by the selected default. That does not guarantee every alternative will display every conversation or attachment in the same way. Google’s setup guidance distinguishes device-stored messages from app features.
Features that depend on proprietary or non-interoperable messaging may not transfer when you switch. Before changing apps, check whether the replacement supports the history, attachments, or other app-specific features you need. Google’s Messages FAQ describes features within Google Messages, not universal support across third-party apps.
What happens to RCS chats?
Do not assume another SMS app will preserve Google Messages’ RCS features. Google says RCS availability varies by region and carrier, and all participants need RCS for RCS chat features. Verify the exact features you care about—such as typing indicators, read receipts, rich media, or RCS group chats—with the intended app, phone, and carrier before switching. Google’s FAQ does not establish universal third-party RCS support.

If messages stop arriving after the switch
If texts stop arriving after changing apps, check whether RCS needs to be deactivated in Google Messages: open Google Messages → Profile → Messages settings → RCS chats and turn RCS off. If you no longer have access to the phone, Google provides an RCS deactivation portal for temporarily deactivating RCS. Google addresses this issue in its RCS troubleshooting guidance.
Check what the replacement app actually supports
Before choosing a different app, verify the capabilities that matter for your setup rather than assuming all texting apps work alike:

- Carrier messages: Does it handle ordinary SMS and MMS, or only messages sent over the internet?
- RCS: Does it support the specific RCS features you want on your device, carrier, and in your region?
- History and attachments: Can it display the SMS history and attachments you need?
- Privacy: What encryption or privacy protection applies to each message type? Do not assume internet messaging protections also apply to carrier SMS/MMS.
- Other devices: Does it provide the desktop or tablet access you need?
Signal is not a carrier SMS/MMS replacement
Signal’s Android app no longer supports SMS/MMS. It can be used for internet-based messages with contacts who also use Signal, but it is not a like-for-like replacement for carrier texting. Keep a separate default SMS app for ordinary texts. Signal’s support page documents the change.
Samsung Messages guidance is U.S.-specific
Samsung says discontinuation of Samsung Messages in the United States began in July 2026 and directs U.S. users to Google Messages. Samsung says conversations transfer automatically, with the time depending on the amount of data. This guidance concerns the Samsung Messages-to-Google Messages transition in the United States; it should not be read as a worldwide status update or as instructions for moving from Google Messages to another app. Samsung’s announcement provides its U.S. guidance.

Switch back or choose a different default
To stop using Google Messages as your default, or to change your mind later, return to Settings → Apps → Default apps → SMS app and select the app you want. The default determines which app handles new SMS/MMS; changing it is not a command to erase the device’s message database. Google’s setup article describes changing the default app.
