Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →To switch from an NVIDIA graphics card to an AMD Radeon card on Windows, download the correct Radeon driver first, uninstall the NVIDIA graphics software, replace the card with the PC powered off, then install the AMD package and restart if prompted. AMD recommends removing existing graphics software before installing another graphics driver because leftovers can contribute to file conflicts. A third-party cleanup utility or a Windows reinstall is not established as necessary for every switch.
Before you start: match the driver to your new Radeon card
Check the exact Radeon model and your Windows version before downloading anything. AMD’s support pages and release notes determine whether a particular card and operating system are supported; do not assume that a package for a similar model will work.
You can locate a package using AMD’s Auto-Detect and Install Tool, which checks compatible Radeon graphics, Ryzen chipsets, and Windows version, or use AMD’s manual product selector to choose the card and operating system yourself. Download the intended package before removing the NVIDIA software so you are not relying on a Windows driver search during the transition.
Recommended or Optional driver?
AMD describes Recommended packages as Microsoft-certified with an emphasis on stability. Optional packages are newer releases with more current features and bug fixes. Choose based on your preference, and check the release notes for your exact GPU and Windows version.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Remove the NVIDIA graphics software
Uninstall the outgoing NVIDIA graphics software before installing the Radeon driver. AMD’s guidance says removing existing graphics software before installing another graphics driver can help prevent potential file conflicts that might corrupt the new driver installation. See AMD’s Windows software removal guidance.
- Open Windows Settings and go to Apps (or Apps & features, depending on your Windows version).
- Find the installed NVIDIA graphics software in the app list and uninstall it. Follow any prompts, then restart if requested.
- If you need to remove a device or its driver package through Device Manager, follow Microsoft’s Device Manager instructions. An administrator can show hidden devices, select the device, choose Uninstall device, and optionally select Delete the driver software for this device.
Device Manager removal is not a requirement for every switch. Microsoft warns that Windows may rediscover a device and reinstall its driver immediately or after a reboot; Windows Update can also reinstall a driver it considers necessary. If that happens, account for it when continuing with the AMD installer rather than assuming the uninstall did not work.

Do not remove AMD chipset drivers as part of this graphics-card change unless you have a separate reason: chipset drivers and graphics drivers are different software. AMD’s Clean Install and Factory Reset options are for removing or resetting AMD Software and AMD drivers; they are not instructions for uninstalling NVIDIA software. NVIDIA’s own clean-install routine concerns reinstalling NVIDIA drivers, not preparing a Radeon installation.
Replace the graphics card with the PC powered off
Shut down and power off the computer before physically replacing the card. Follow the instructions for the specific computer and graphics card. The support pages cited here do not provide a complete hardware replacement procedure or establish power-supply and clearance requirements, so check your system and card documentation for those details.

Install the Radeon driver
Run the AMD package you downloaded for the new card and Windows version. AMD describes Express and Custom installation in its Windows Radeon Software installation guidance. The current Adrenalin installer may offer Default, Minimal, or Driver Only software types, depending on the system and software version; see AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition installation instructions.
| Install choice | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Default or Express | A standard installation flow with the usual software components. The exact label and components depend on the installer. |
| Minimal | Installs fewer AMD Software controls than the full software option; what is available can depend on the installer version. |
| Driver Only | Installs the driver without the AMD Software user interface for its features. |
| Custom | Lets you choose from installer options where supported; available choices vary by system and package. |
A brief screen flicker during AMD driver installation is documented as normal. Restart if the installer requests it, then confirm Windows detects the Radeon card. If installation fails, record the displayed error code and consult AMD’s matching error guidance; avoid repeatedly changing unrelated settings without diagnosing the reported error.

When Windows reinstalls a driver or installation problems persist
Windows may rediscover devices or reinstall drivers, and Windows Update may install a driver it considers necessary. Disconnecting from the internet is not a universal requirement. Consider controlling updates or temporarily preventing an automatic driver search only if Windows is interfering with the specific installation you are performing, and follow the relevant Windows guidance.
Start with the documented Windows removal paths and AMD’s official driver package. A third-party display-driver cleanup utility is an optional troubleshooting route for persistent problems, not a required step for every NVIDIA-to-Radeon change. Verify any utility’s current official source and instructions before using it; do not treat AMD’s Factory Reset or Clean Install as an NVIDIA removal method.

Microsoft recommends creating a system restore point before changing driver packages. Permanently removing a package from the driver store is an advanced measure: Microsoft cautions that it can leave a device without a driver, and Windows Update may reinstall a needed package.
