To switch between game VODs without ending a YouTube livestream, keep the broadcast live and change the video source in the encoder sending the feed. Load the prerecorded files into an encoder that supports media sources or playlists, then advance to the next VOD while the same YouTube broadcast remains active. The exact controls vary by encoder; YouTube’s documentation explains the connection and stream architecture, not a universal playlist interface.

How the switch works

YouTube distinguishes the incoming stream from the viewer-facing broadcast. The encoder sends the picture and sound to YouTube using a stream URL and stream key; the broadcast is the event viewers watch. YouTube describes each broadcast as a distinct video bound to a stream, and says a stream can be reused for broadcasts at different times. For a VOD change within one live event, keep the broadcast running and change what the encoder outputs. YouTube Live Streaming API: Understanding Broadcasts and Streams

An encoder is the software or service that sends the feed. YouTube lists OBS among its encoder examples and says an encoder can share a screen or broadcast gameplay. These are examples, not endorsements, and the YouTube documentation does not establish that every encoder or cloud service can schedule a playlist of prerecorded files. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder

Set up a continuous stream of game VODs

  1. Choose an encoder with the controls you need. Confirm that it can send a continuous feed to YouTube and that its media-source or playlist features suit your files and desired order. The steps and labels depend on the encoder and version.
  2. Create or select the YouTube event. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the stream and copy its stream URL and stream key into the encoder. Treat the stream key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream. Manage live stream settings
  3. Load and arrange the VODs in the encoder. Add the files as media or video sources, or use a playlist facility if the encoder provides one. Set the intended order and decide how the encoder should move from one file to the next. YouTube does not prescribe these encoder-side controls.
  4. Start the encoder and check the preview. Before treating the event as live, confirm that Live Control Room shows the expected video, check audio and picture quality, and verify the event is accessible from the channel or watch page and on mobile. YouTube live streaming tips
  5. Change sources while the broadcast stays live. Advance the playlist or select the next VOD in the encoder. A brief slate or transition scene between files is optional production advice, not a YouTube requirement.
  6. Record and monitor locally. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive and checking that the file is growing. That gives you a backup if the platform archive is unavailable or incomplete. Archive live streams

Choose a local or cloud workflow

Local software encoder

A local encoder gives you direct control over media sources and the outgoing feed. Check playlist and source-switch support, transition controls, local recording, operating-system compatibility, and how much manual monitoring the setup requires. The computer and network connection running the encoder must remain available for the stream to continue.

Cloud or managed encoder

A cloud or managed encoder can reduce reliance on a computer at home, but confirm that the specific service supports prerecorded-file scheduling and the switching workflow you need. YouTube’s list of encoder examples is not a guarantee that each supports game-VOD playlists; the cited guidance does not compare their prices or capabilities. YouTube also says expensive equipment is not necessary to get started, so buy hardware only if your inputs or production needs call for it. YouTube encoder options

Plan around YouTube’s archive and DVR limits

For streams under 12 hours, YouTube can automatically archive the event. Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, so do not rely on the platform archive as the only copy of an extended broadcast. Archive live streams

Check rights and live-stream eligibility

Livestream content must follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Having a game VOD or soundtrack does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast it: rights depend on the game footage, music, and other material in the specific recording and on the permissions you have. Check those rights before putting the VOD in a live playlist. YouTube’s general live-streaming guidance covers eligibility and policy basics. Get started with live streaming

Troubleshooting

  • The YouTube broadcast ends when you change VODs. The encoder may be stopping or restarting its output instead of switching the active source within the running session. Check the encoder’s source or playlist controls and keep the same broadcast active.
  • The preview is blank or shows the wrong file. Check that the intended media source is active and that the encoder is sending to the correct YouTube event. Verify the result in Live Control Room before relying on the public watch page.
  • There is no audio or the wrong audio plays. Check the selected source’s audio routing and listen to the Live Control Room preview. YouTube recommends monitoring audio and video quality during setup and streaming. YouTube live streaming tips
  • The stream does not connect. Confirm that the encoder has the correct stream URL and stream key for the selected event. If the key has been exposed, replace it in YouTube and update the encoder rather than continuing to use a compromised credential. Manage live stream settings
  • The event has no usable archive or rewind. Check whether the session exceeded 12 hours. YouTube may not capture streams over that length, and DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable; use a local recording and consider shorter sessions if those features matter.
