To last longer in DOOM: The Dark Ages’ solo endless challenge, use the Ripatorium’s settings to build up gradually: start with a manageable enemy mix, keep health and ammo pickups available, and add enemies or respawn waves only when the current setup feels sustainable. In combat, use the Shield Saw to parry, evade, stun, or clear demons, and work melee into your attacks to support ammo recovery.
What is the endless solo challenge?
The solo arena is the Ripatorium. Bethesda introduced its Endless option in Update 2, alongside controls for choosing demon types and quantities, setting a time limit, and selecting the City of Ry’uul, Village of Khalim, or Harbor of Souls arenas. It also includes an enemy respawn counter. Bethesda’s Update 2 notes document those options.

Later updates added more ways to control a run. Update 3 made encounters round-based, with up to five rounds and up to ten respawn waves per round, plus Medium, Challenging, and Sadistic presets that can be used with any difficulty level. Update 4 added continuous spawning, which brings demons back within a round rather than waiting for the current wave to be eliminated. Bethesda’s Update 3 notes and Update 4 notes describe these changes.
Set up a run you can learn from
Start with a controlled encounter
Choose a modest enemy selection and a limited number of respawn waves. If you can handle that consistently, increase the enemy quantity or wave count, then try a harder preset. This is a gradual practice approach based on the available settings, not an officially recommended or tested best configuration.

Keep recovery available while practicing
Update 4 lets you set health and ammo pickups to disabled, one-time use, or respawn on a five-minute timer. For a longer learning run, leave pickups available; switch to one-time or disabled pickups only when you intentionally want resource scarcity. Update 2.1 had previously added health and ammo pickups to Ripatorium arenas.
Choose between a controlled pace and continuous pressure
In the existing wave-based setup, the demons in a wave must be eliminated before the next respawn wave. Continuous spawn mode instead respawns demons within rounds. Use the wave structure when you want discrete stages to assess, and continuous spawning when you want uninterrupted pressure. The two modes are alternatives, not evidence that one produces longer survival for every player.

Adjust intensity without changing everything at once
Ripatorium presets offer Medium, Challenging, and Sadistic encounters, while the game’s difficulty can be chosen separately. If a run ends too quickly, lower one pressure source—such as enemy quantity, wave count, or preset intensity—before changing several settings together. The end-of-run summary reports difficulty settings and kill counts for Fodder, Heavy, and Super Heavy demons, which can help identify what to practice next.
Use the Shield Saw to defend and create openings
Bethesda describes several uses for the Shield Saw that help manage threats rather than simply dealing damage:

- Parry: Time a parry to reflect certain incoming attacks.
- Shield Charge: Use the charge as an evasive maneuver or to batter an enemy.
- Shield Saw throw: Lodge the blades in demons to stun them; the throw can also mow down lesser demons.
- Heated armor: Strike heated enemy metal armor with Shield Throw to create an explosion.
These mechanics are documented in Bethesda’s gameplay guide. They give you options to disrupt threats and reposition; they do not establish a guaranteed survival sequence.
Weave melee into your ammo plan
Bethesda says a loading tip about melee refilling ammo appears more frequently after Update 2. That supports using melee as part of your combat rhythm instead of relying exclusively on guns. The update note does not quantify how much ammunition a melee attack restores, so treat it as a resource aid rather than a fixed refill amount.

Use modifiers and recovery options to tune difficulty
If the incoming pressure feels excessive, the game offers more granular settings beyond enemy count. Bethesda documents an enemy projectile speed modifier and resource values that change how much health, armor, and ammunition pickups replenish. Update 3 also describes Brink of Death support: Normal provides recommended support, while Hard provides less support and makes low-health survival more challenging. Adjust these settings when you want to isolate a specific challenge, such as slower incoming projectiles or reduced pickup replenishment.
When to use expansion arenas and presets
Revelations Ripatorium content unlocks after completing the Master Arenas. It adds the Hell’s Core, Osseus, and Classic arenas; Revelations demons, including Leaders and Champions; a fully upgraded Revelations loadout; and six curated presets. These expand the available practice variety, but the official update notes do not rank an arena, loadout, or demon combination as best for surviving longest.

The documented figures describe configuration limits, not survival records: Update 3 supports up to five rounds and up to ten respawn waves per round; Update 4 offers five-minute respawn options for pickups and Berserk; and BFC ammo can be set from zero to three. Bethesda and id Software have not published a Ripatorium survival-duration benchmark or a universally best setup in the official materials cited here. Treat your own end-of-run summary as feedback on your configuration, not as a comparison with an official record.
