If a game developer you know has been laid off, ask what would help before offering advice. A specific, low-pressure offer—such as reviewing a portfolio, sharing a relevant job, making an introduction, or helping find benefit information—is easier to accept or decline than a vague promise to “help.” They may not be ready to job-hunt, and a layoff is not a measure of their skill or worth.
Start by asking what kind of support they want
Studio closures and layoffs can leave people dealing with immediate practical needs as well as uncertainty about what comes next. Avoid assuming that a person wants to update a résumé, network, or discuss the job search right away. Ask whether they would prefer practical help, company, or space.

- “Would it help if I looked for roles that match your experience?”
- “Would you like a portfolio review, or would you rather not think about applications today?”
- “I can introduce you to a colleague in your area of work if you want.”
- “Would it help to sit together and find the right benefits or unemployment information?”
Make the offer specific and easy to turn down. If they accept, agree on a small next step and follow through. If they decline or do not respond, do not treat that as a request to persuade them.
Where laid-off game developers can look for industry support
IGDA career and community channels
The International Game Developers Association (IGDA) Career Center points job seekers to game-industry postings, free Discord channels for job opportunities and people looking for work, networking through local chapters and discipline-based Special Interest Groups (SIGs), and the Global Mentorship Program. IGDA says mentors may offer career and résumé advice, portfolio reviews, and networking assistance. Check the current access or membership conditions for a particular service before telling someone it is available to them. IGDA Career Center

Layoff resource listings
IGDA’s Resource Consolidation Initiative gathers resources for developers experiencing layoffs as well as people advancing their game-development careers. Its page links to a layoff resource list, which can be a useful starting point when someone wants to explore options themselves. IGDA Resource Consolidation Initiative
Peer connections without pressure
Community can help a person feel less isolated, but “just network” is not a plan. Offer one relevant introduction, invite them to a specific event or peer group, or help them locate a channel that fits their discipline. Let them decide whether and when to participate.

Check immediate financial and employment needs
Reported Game Worker Hardship Fund
Game Developer reported on July 2, 2026, that members of United Videogame Workers-CWA established a Game Worker Hardship Fund. The report said affected workers in the United States and Canada, including nonmembers, could seek a small amount up to $1,000 or a larger amount between $1,000 and $5,000 for needs such as groceries, medical bills, and rent. These are reported terms, not a guarantee that the fund is currently open, funded, or that any applicant will qualify. U.S. Rapid Response services
In the United States, Department of Labor Rapid Response teams may provide information and services before a layoff date. Depending on the state and layoff situation, services can include unemployment-insurance information, health-coverage options, training, career counseling, job-search assistance, and résumé or interview workshops. Ask whether the person has been offered a Rapid Response session; if not, help them find their state or local team. Services vary, so do not assume a particular program or benefit applies. Unemployment insurance in the United States
The Department of Labor advises people who have become unemployed to contact their state unemployment-insurance program as soon as possible. Eligibility and benefit rules depend on state law and other requirements. Help locate the relevant state program, but do not promise that the person qualifies or estimate a benefit without an official determination. Health coverage after a U.S. job loss
Some workers may be eligible to continue employer group health coverage under COBRA. Federal guidance describes a 60-day election period measured from the later of the notice date or the date coverage ends; a person electing continuation coverage may have to pay the full premium plus a 2% administrative fee. Employer size, plan coverage, and other conditions matter. Encourage the person to read their official election notice and compare available options rather than assuming COBRA is available or the best fit. Use the right rules for the person’s location
Unemployment, health coverage, notice obligations, and other employment protections depend on jurisdiction and individual circumstances. The U.S. information above does not establish entitlements elsewhere. For someone outside the United States, help them find the relevant national or regional employment, unemployment, and health agencies, and use their own benefit and layoff notices as the starting point. Avoid giving legal or benefits guarantees based on another country’s rules.

The GDC Festival of Gaming’s 2026 State of the Game Industry report surveyed more than 2,300 game-industry professionals. Among respondents, 28% said they had been laid off in the previous two years; the figure was 33% among U.S.-based respondents. Half said their current or most recent employer had conducted layoffs in the previous 12 months. These are survey findings, not a complete count of all game workers. The same report found that 82% of U.S.-based respondents supported game-industry unionization, 5% opposed it, and 13% were unsure. That result describes the surveyed U.S.-based respondents, not every worker in the industry. It may be useful context if someone wants to explore collective organizing, but it should not be treated as a substitute for the immediate support they ask for.
For historical context, the 2025 GDC report said one in 10 respondents had lost their jobs in the preceding year. It surveyed more than 3,000 developers, reported a margin of error of ±2 percentage points, and cautioned that respondents may overrepresent Western developers. When the person wants longer-term or collective support
Some developers may want to learn about workplace organizing as well as individual career help. In a March 25, 2026 announcement, Communications Workers of America described organizing activity by UVW-CWA and a proposed Game Workers’ Bill of Rights. Its announcement also listed a virtual conference for May 22–23, 2026; those dates have passed, so it should not be treated as an upcoming event. Whatever kind of help they choose, keep the support person-led: ask, offer something concrete, and let them set the pace.
