A CPU stress test deliberately keeps the processor under a demanding, sustained workload to expose overheating, unstable voltage or clocks, throttling, calculation errors, crashes, and marginal overclock or undervolt settings. For most Windows and Linux users, OCCT is the best starting point because it combines CPU workloads, sensor monitoring, error detection, and additional RAM, GPU, and power tests. Prime95 is a harsher, repeatable option for enthusiasts, while Intel users seeking a basic processor check can use Intel’s Processor Diagnostic Tool.

What a CPU stress test actually checks

Unlike a benchmark, which measures performance and returns a score, a stress test tries to reveal instability under sustained load. Depending on the workload, it can exercise arithmetic and instruction execution, CPU cache, the memory controller, cooling, motherboard power delivery, and the operating system’s ability to remain stable.

Workload Main purpose Problems it may expose
Heavy CPU-only Maximum processor heat and sustained power Cooling limits and thermal throttling
CPU plus cache Core and cache stability Aggressive overclock or undervolt settings
Blend or large-data CPU plus memory subsystem RAM, memory-controller, and XMP/EXPO instability
CPU plus GPU or power Whole-system load PSU, VRM, and case-airflow problems
Diagnostic test Basic processor functionality Defective hardware or unsupported features

A completed test is evidence only for the selected workload, duration, hardware configuration, and ambient conditions. It does not guarantee stability in every game, application, memory setting, or temperature.

Why run one?

  • After building a PC or installing a new cooler.
  • After repasting a processor or changing case airflow.
  • After enabling XMP or EXPO, changing BIOS power limits, overclocking, or undervolting.
  • When the system randomly reboots, freezes, blue-screens, or runs hotter or slower than expected.
  • To validate a newly purchased or custom-built computer before accepting it.
  • To separate a thermal or configuration problem from an ordinary application bug.

Choose a tool by your goal

Goal First choice Why Limitation
General stability diagnosis OCCT CPU, RAM, GPU, and power-oriented tests with monitoring and error reports; free core testing is available for Windows and Linux. Its many controls require some interpretation.
Maximum CPU heat Prime95 Small FFTs or AIDA64 FPU Highly demanding, repeatable processor workloads. Much harsher than many everyday applications.
Overclock or undervolt validation Prime95 plus OCCT Different workloads can reveal different marginal failures. Long runs consume substantial power and generate heat.
CPU plus memory validation Prime95 Blend or OCCT memory/CPU tests Exercises more of the memory subsystem. A failure may not identify the exact component.
Intel processor health check Intel Processor Diagnostic Tool Checks identification, frequency, features, and basic functionality with PASS/FAIL results. Windows-only and Intel-specific.
Detailed professional diagnostics AIDA64 Separate CPU, FPU, cache, memory, disk, and GPU controls with detailed monitoring. Its FPU and combined tests can heavily increase heat and power; licensing varies by edition.
Sensor monitoring only HWiNFO Shows temperatures, effective clocks, package power, fan/pump speed, and throttling indicators. It does not create the CPU workload.

Prepare safely

  1. Save work and close unnecessary applications.
  2. If diagnosing instability, return BIOS settings to known-good stock values. Test a new configuration at stock before judging an overclock.
  3. Confirm that the CPU fan or liquid-cooler pump is detected, fans are unobstructed, and the case has reasonable airflow.
  4. Install HWiNFO or use OCCT’s sensors. OCCT recommends enabling temperature, power, voltage, frequency, and fan readings; see its testing guide.
  5. Record idle temperature, room temperature when relevant, idle clock, and power.
  6. Use AC power on a laptop and know the exact processor’s published thermal limit. There is no universal safe-temperature number.
  7. Do not begin with an unattended, hours-long run.

Run an OCCT test

  1. Download OCCT from occt.io, install it, and launch it.
  2. Select CPU and begin with the default or a moderate workload rather than the harshest option.
  3. Run an initial 10–15 minute check while watching temperature, package power, effective clock, thermal-throttling status, fan or pump speed, and reported errors.
  4. Stop immediately if temperature rapidly approaches the processor’s specified limit, cooling stops responding, the system becomes unstable, or you notice an abnormal smell, electrical noise, or visible hardware problem.
  5. If the short run is normal, use 15–30 minutes for a basic cooling check, 30–60 minutes for an initial stock-stability check, or several hours for stronger overclock or undervolt confidence.
  6. Read OCCT’s report; a computer that did not crash can still have logged calculation errors, throttling, or voltage drops.

Run Prime95

  1. Download Prime95 from the official GIMPS download page.
  2. Choose Just Stress Testing if prompted, then open Options → Torture Test.
  3. Choose Small FFTs for primarily CPU/cache loading and maximum heat, or Blend for more CPU-and-memory-system involvement. The workload distinctions are documented in the Prime95 guide.
  4. Start with a short, monitored run. A worker error, fatal error, freeze, reboot, or blue screen is a failed run for that configuration.
  5. Stop if temperatures become unsafe or the computer becomes unstable. Extend testing only after cooling and power behavior are known to be normal, then validate with the applications you actually use.

Use Intel Processor Diagnostic Tool

Intel’s current download page lists release 4.1.9.41 and Windows 10, Windows 11, and several Windows Server families; verify compatibility for your exact processor and operating system. Intel documents three modes: Quick Test, Functional Test, and a 120-minute Burn-in Test, with looping available. A PASS means the selected modules completed successfully; a FAIL requires investigation of the named module and system configuration. The utility is not available for Linux or macOS. See Intel’s support documentation.

How long should testing run?

Duration Appropriate use
10–15 minutes Initial safety, temperature, and cooling check
15–30 minutes Basic thermal or cooler validation
30–60 minutes Initial stock-stability check
Several hours Higher confidence for an overclock or undervolt after shorter runs pass

No duration proves universal stability. An overnight test increases confidence only for the tested configuration and conditions, and should not be the first test for an unverified system.

Interpret temperatures, clocks, and results

A pass means

  • The selected workload completed for the selected duration without a detected calculation error, crash, freeze, or reboot.
  • Temperature stayed within the limit you chose for the exact processor.
  • No obvious thermal-throttling or cooling-control problem occurred.

A pass does not mean

  • Every application, game, memory profile, or ambient temperature will be stable.
  • RAM or the PSU is proven healthy unless the test meaningfully exercised it.
  • A laptop will hold its advertised boost clock indefinitely.
  • An overclock is safe simply because one benchmark or short stress test completed.

Report peak and sustained temperature, effective clock, package power, and whether throttling occurred. A high temperature without a crash is not automatically a failure: modern processors may reduce frequency or power to protect themselves. Compare the readings with the exact CPU’s official thermal specification rather than a generic cutoff such as 80°C.

When a test fails

Temperature rises immediately

Stop and inspect for a stopped pump or fan, incorrect mounting, protective film left on the cooler, poor thermal-compound application, a blocked heatsink or radiator, dust, inadequate laptop cooling, or excessive motherboard power settings. Repeat only after correcting the suspected issue.

The computer reboots or freezes

Return BIOS settings to stock, test CPU-only, test memory separately, inspect Windows Event Viewer and WHEA entries, try another workload, and check PSU and motherboard power connections. Thermal protection, unstable voltage, RAM, firmware, PSU, VRM, or a hardware fault can all cause an abrupt reboot.

Errors appear with normal temperatures

Check CPU voltage and load-line calibration, memory-profile settings, RAM seating, BIOS version, per-core behavior, and WHEA reports. Repeat at stock CPU and memory settings to distinguish configuration instability from a component fault.

Prime95 fails but normal software works

This establishes that the current configuration failed that unusually demanding workload at that duration. It may indicate narrow cooling or voltage margins, cache or memory instability, or a workload harsher than your normal use; it does not by itself prove that the CPU is defective.

A combined test fails

AIDA64 notes that instability during combined tests can originate in the PSU or another component rather than the CPU. Isolate CPU, memory, GPU, and power tests instead of replacing the processor immediately.

Important distinctions

  • 100% CPU usage alone is not dangerous; temperature, voltage, cooling, throttling, and stability determine whether the system is operating correctly.
  • Small FFTs, Blend, OCCT CPU, AIDA64 FPU, and combined power tests are not interchangeable.
  • A CPU stress test is not a substitute for a dedicated memory test, storage test, or GPU test.
  • Stock validation and overclock validation have different risk, duration, and workload requirements.

Can I stress-test a laptop?

Yes, but use AC power and monitor sustained clock, package power, temperature, and throttling. Manufacturer power limits, shared CPU/GPU cooling, the adapter, and the chassis can make throttling normal.

Does a CPU stress test test RAM?

Only some workloads do. Prime95 Blend and OCCT memory or mixed tests involve the memory subsystem; a CPU-only workload cannot establish that RAM is stable.

Is Prime95 better than OCCT?

Neither is universally better. Prime95 is especially useful for repeatable, severe CPU/cache and memory-system workloads; OCCT is more convenient for broad diagnosis, monitoring, error reports, and follow-up GPU, RAM, and power tests.

Can Task Manager stress-test a CPU?

No. Task Manager can show CPU utilization, but it does not provide a controlled workload, calculation-error detection, or meaningful stability report.
