You have two official ways to stream Xbox games to a mobile device or computer:

  • Xbox Remote Play at xbox.com/remoteplay streams games installed on your own Xbox console. The console must be configured for remote access and reachable over the internet.
  • Xbox Cloud Gaming at xbox.com/play runs supported games on Microsoft’s servers, so you do not need your console beside you. You need the entitlement required for the game, and availability depends on the title, device, and region.

For either route, a compatible phone, tablet, or PC and a supported Bluetooth controller are the safest starting point. Some cloud games offer touch controls, but controller support is the dependable baseline.

Choose the right streaming method

The quickest decision is whether the game should run on your console or in the cloud.

What you need before starting

A Microsoft account with an Xbox profile

Sign in with the Microsoft account associated with your Xbox profile. For Remote Play, use the same account on the console and the streaming device. Cloud Gaming also requires you to sign in and have the plan or other game entitlement required for the title you select.

A compatible phone, tablet, or PC

Remote Play and Cloud Gaming support compatible phones, tablets, and PCs through supported browsers or apps. Exact browser, app, operating-system, and regional support is not fixed; use the current Xbox page as the compatibility check rather than assuming every device model works.

A controller and a usable connection

Pair an Xbox Wireless Controller or another model that Xbox lists as compatible over Bluetooth. On a phone or tablet, a clip or grip can make long sessions more comfortable, but verify that it fits both your exact controller and the dimensions of your device. Cloud games that expose touch controls can be played without a controller, although touch layouts and availability vary by game.

Both services send a live video and audio stream, so connection quality matters more than raw device power. The official pages do not publish one universal bandwidth or latency number for every device and region. In practice, use a reliable internet connection, avoid congested Wi-Fi where possible, and expect a better experience when the device and console or cloud service have a strong, stable path between them.

How to use Xbox Remote Play

Remote Play is the choice when the game is installed on your Xbox and you want that console to do the rendering. The console remains the source of the session; your phone, tablet, or PC displays the stream and sends controller input back.

1. Enable remote features on the console

  1. Turn on the Xbox and open Settings.
  2. Open the section for Devices & connections and then the console’s Remote features settings. Xbox’s labels can change with system updates, so follow the wording shown on your console.
  3. Enable remote features or remote play.
  4. Run the console’s remote-play test if it is offered. Resolve any reported configuration or network issue before leaving home.

The test is useful because Remote Play depends on the console accepting remote connections, not merely on the target device having a browser. If the feature is disabled, the remote session cannot start.

2. Choose a power mode that permits remote access

Leave the console in a power mode that permits remote wake or otherwise keeps it available according to the current Xbox instructions. A completely powered-down console that cannot wake remotely will not respond to a Remote Play request. If you change power settings, run the remote-play test again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Confirm the game is installed

Remote Play starts games installed on the selected console. Check the console’s storage before you leave. A game that is only available through a disc you have not inserted, or a title that is not installed, cannot be launched as an installed remote session until the console has the required game available.

4. Sign in from the target device

  1. On the phone, tablet, or PC, open xbox.com/remoteplay in a supported browser, or use a supported Xbox app where available.
  2. Sign in with the same Microsoft account used on the console.
  3. Select the console shown as available.
  4. Wait for the remote session to connect, then choose an installed game.

If no console appears, return to the console and check its remote-feature setting, power mode, internet connection, and account. The console must be online and reachable; being in the same room is not required, but the console’s home network must be functioning.

5. Pair the controller and play

  1. Put the Bluetooth controller into pairing mode.
  2. On the phone, tablet, or PC, open the operating system’s Bluetooth settings and select the controller.
  3. Return to the Remote Play session and confirm that button presses are recognized.
  4. Launch the installed game.

Keep the controller connected to the device running the stream, not merely paired with the Xbox in another room. If input is missing, disconnect it from other devices and pair it again with the phone, tablet, or PC.

How to use Xbox Cloud Gaming

Cloud Gaming is different from Remote Play: Microsoft’s servers run the game and send the result to your screen. You can therefore play without an Xbox console at home, provided the game, plan, device, and region are eligible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Open the cloud-gaming service

  1. Open xbox.com/play in a supported browser, or use an Xbox cloud-gaming app where Xbox makes one available for your device.
  2. Sign in with your Microsoft account.
  3. Check that your account has the Game Pass plan or other entitlement required for the game you want to stream.

The catalog is not a promise that every Xbox title is cloud playable. A game may be absent because it is not supported in the cloud, is unavailable in your region, or requires an entitlement your account does not have.

2. Select a cloud-playable game

Choose a title marked as available for cloud play. Game Pass plans provide access to the catalog associated with the plan. Game Pass Ultimate members may also see the Stream your own game collection, which allows streaming of select games they own. That feature is limited by title and regional availability, so ownership alone does not make every game streamable.

3. Connect a controller

  1. Pair an Xbox Wireless Controller or another controller listed by Xbox as compatible using Bluetooth.
  2. Open the game and test the sticks, triggers, and buttons at the title screen.
  3. If the game presents touch controls, decide whether they are suitable for the session; use a controller when the game’s controls or your connection make touch input difficult.

4. Start and end the session

Select Play or the equivalent cloud-play command shown for the title. Keep the browser tab or supported app in the foreground while playing. When finished, use the game’s normal save and quit options before closing the stream so the service has time to synchronize your progress.

Phone and tablet setup tips

Android phones and tablets

Open the current Remote Play or Cloud Gaming web page in a supported browser, sign in, and pair the controller through Bluetooth. A landscape orientation usually gives games more room for menus and on-screen controls. A controller clip is optional; measure the phone’s width and check the clip’s supported controller model before buying one.

iPhone and iPad

Use the supported browser experience at the relevant Xbox page and sign in with your Microsoft account. Pair the controller in iOS or iPadOS Bluetooth settings before launching the session. If a browser tab is discarded when you switch apps, reopen the service and sign in again; this is a device or browser behavior rather than a different Xbox account requirement.

When a tablet is the better choice

A tablet gives the stream a larger display without requiring a television. It is especially useful for strategy, role-playing, and menu-heavy games, while a phone is easier to carry. Both still depend on the same controller, account, title, and regional eligibility rules.

PC setup and choosing between the two routes

On a PC, you can use a supported browser or Xbox app where available. Remote Play is appropriate when your home console has the installed game and is online. Cloud Gaming is appropriate when the game is in the available cloud catalog or is eligible for Stream Your Own Game and your account has the required plan.

If your situation is… Use… Reason
You are away from home and want a game installed on your Xbox Remote Play The console supplies the game and must remain reachable
You do not own an Xbox console Cloud Gaming The game runs on Microsoft’s servers
You own a supported title but it is not installed Cloud Gaming, if eligible Stream Your Own Game is limited to select titles and Game Pass Ultimate members
Your console is offline or cannot wake remotely Neither Remote Play nor that console session Remote Play requires an available, connected console; use Cloud Gaming if the title and account qualify

How network conditions affect streaming

Streaming is interactive video, not a download. The service must continuously deliver the picture and audio while sending your inputs back to the game. A connection can be fast enough for ordinary web pages yet still feel poor when it is unstable or congested.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remote Play’s network path

Remote Play uses two ends of the path: your current device and the Xbox at home. Problems at either end can cause a blurry picture, pauses, disconnects, or delayed controls. Check the home console’s network and the device’s current connection separately. If the console is on a busy wireless network, reducing competing traffic or using a more reliable connection for the console can help.

Cloud Gaming’s network path

Cloud Gaming removes the home-console requirement, but your device still needs a consistent route to Microsoft’s servers. Regional distance, local congestion, and Wi-Fi interference can affect responsiveness. If the same device works well on one network and poorly on another, the network path is the likely variable rather than the game installation.

Practical ways to improve a session

  • Move closer to the wireless access point or use a less congested network.
  • Pause large downloads, video streams, and backups on the same connection.
  • Keep the device plugged in for long sessions if battery-saving behavior reduces wireless performance.
  • Close unnecessary browser tabs and apps that compete for memory or bandwidth.
  • Try the session again at another location or time to determine whether the problem follows the network.

There is no single official bandwidth or latency threshold that applies to every device, region, and service path. Treat a stable connection and low delay as practical requirements rather than relying on an invented universal number.

Troubleshooting checklist

Remote Play cannot find the console

  • Confirm the console is powered in a mode that permits remote wake or remote availability.
  • Return to Settings on the Xbox and verify that remote features remain enabled.
  • Run the console’s remote-play test again.
  • Check that the console is online and that you signed in with the same Microsoft account on both devices.
  • Make sure the game is installed and available on that console.

The cloud game does not show a Play option

  • Check whether the title is marked as cloud playable.
  • Verify that your Game Pass plan or other entitlement includes the title.
  • If you are using Stream Your Own Game, confirm that the title is one of the select supported games and that the feature is available in your region.
  • Refresh the page or reopen the supported app after signing out and back in.

The controller is connected but does nothing

  • Check the device’s Bluetooth settings and make sure the controller is connected to the device running the stream.
  • Disconnect it from another phone, PC, or console that may have reclaimed the connection.
  • Close and reopen the game after pairing.
  • Try a controller model that Xbox lists as compatible if the current one is not recognized.

The picture is blurry or the controls feel delayed

  • Test the connection without other heavy traffic on the network.
  • Move closer to the access point or switch networks.
  • For Remote Play, check both the home console’s connection and the device’s connection.
  • For Cloud Gaming, compare performance on another supported network to separate a service issue from local Wi-Fi conditions.

The session disconnects when the phone locks

Streaming normally requires the browser or app to remain active. Disable automatic screen locking for the session where appropriate, keep the app in the foreground, and check the device’s battery-saving settings. Reopen the service if the operating system suspended the browser.

Ownership, subscriptions, and availability

Remote Play and Cloud Gaming answer different ownership questions. Remote Play gives remote access to what is available on your console, so the important checks are console access, installation, and account. Cloud Gaming gives access to a server-side catalog tied to your plan or entitlement. Game Pass access is catalog-based, while Stream Your Own Game is an additional option for Game Pass Ultimate members and only covers select owned titles.

Availability is not permanent or universal. A title, controller, browser, app, or feature can be supported in one region and unavailable in another, and Xbox can change catalog and device support. Check xbox.com/play or xbox.com/remoteplay immediately before a trip, subscription change, or device purchase.

Which option should you use?

  • Use Remote Play when the game is installed on your Xbox, you want access to your own console library, and the console can stay online in a remotely available power mode.
  • Use Cloud Gaming when you want to play without an Xbox console nearby, want to avoid installing the game, or have an eligible Game Pass plan and a cloud-supported title.
  • Use both when your library and circumstances vary: Remote Play covers installed console games, while Cloud Gaming covers supported catalog titles and select owned games through the Ultimate feature.

In every case, start at the route that matches where the game will run, sign in with the correct Microsoft account, verify title and regional eligibility, and pair a supported controller before launching.
