To stream to YouTube with a custom RTMP ingest URL, copy the Stream URL and stream key shown for your broadcast in YouTube Studio, enter them in the matching fields in your encoder, then start the encoder and check the Live Control Room preview. Choose RTMPS instead of RTMP when your encoder supports it; use the exact destination YouTube displays rather than a generic URL copied from an example.
Get the YouTube ingest URL and stream key
- Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live, then open the Stream tab. Create a stream or select the scheduled stream you intend to use. YouTube’s interface labels may change; follow the destination shown in your current Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes this workflow.
- Check the broadcast details. Confirm the title, visibility, and schedule before you connect. If you are reusing an existing stream setup, check that the loaded settings and stream key belong to the intended broadcast. Stream privacy defaults can vary by age, and you can change the stream’s privacy setting.
- Copy the destination URL. Copy the value in YouTube’s Stream URL field. That is the server or destination address your encoder needs. A “custom URL” means the actual ingest destination YouTube displays for your stream or protocol—not a made-up address or an example URL.
- Copy the key separately. Copy the stream key into your encoder’s stream-key field. A stream key is a credential: treat it like a password and do not expose it in screenshots, recordings, or logs. YouTube explains stream-key management in Manage live stream settings.
If your encoder offers a YouTube destination preset, you can select it instead of manually choosing a server. Enter the stream key if the preset prompts for it. Otherwise, use the fields usually named Server, Destination, or RTMP Server for the URL and Stream Key for the key.
Choose RTMPS when your encoder supports it
RTMPS is RTMP carried over TLS/SSL. YouTube recommends it because it encrypts the connection. The URL initially displayed may be ordinary RTMP, so do not assume it is secure without checking the protocol. In the Stream tab of Live Control Room, use the lock icon in the Stream URL field to reveal the RTMPS destination, then copy that exact value into an RTMPS-capable encoder. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
Do not change the host or path to match a sample URL. The correct server and path are the ones shown for your own stream. If your encoder does not support RTMPS, check its documentation and use a supported YouTube ingest option rather than guessing at the address.

Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.
Configure encoder settings and test the signal
Match the encoder’s output to the video you are sending and the upload capacity of the connection. YouTube’s published settings support H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video over RTMP/RTMPS, up to 60 fps, with constant bitrate (CBR); audio can use AAC or MP3. For the applicable codec, resolution, and frame rate, check YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate table before choosing a bitrate. The figures below are YouTube recommendations, not independent measurements; the Help page was checked on 2026-10-03, and its publication date is not stated.
| H.264 output | YouTube-listed minimum bitrate | YouTube-listed recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed four seconds.
- Audio: Use AAC or MP3; YouTube recommends 128 Kbps for stereo audio.
- Bandwidth: Leave upload headroom beyond the encoder’s video and audio bitrates. A connection that cannot sustain the configured output can cause buffering or stream-health warnings.
- Test content: Before a public event, send a test with representative motion and audio. Watch the Live Control Room preview, stream health, and any encoder or YouTube messages.
Start the encoder and take the stream live
- In the encoder, confirm the RTMP or RTMPS URL and stream key are in their separate fields, then start streaming.
- Wait for the incoming signal and preview to appear in Live Control Room. Resolve any warnings before proceeding.
- For a scheduled stream, select Go live in Live Control Room after the preview is ready. Follow the control room’s instructions to end the broadcast, then stop the encoder as directed by the workflow.
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. This archive behavior does not mean a stream can safely run indefinitely; plan for YouTube’s stated duration limit and your own broadcast requirements.

Protect or replace a stream key
If a key may have been exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio via Create > Go Live > Stream, then replace the saved key in your encoder before the next broadcast. YouTube says only a channel owner or manager can reset a key. A reset invalidates the prior credential, so any encoder still using it will need the new one. Details are in YouTube’s stream settings help.
Troubleshoot connection and preview problems
- Encoder says it cannot connect: Check that you copied the full Stream URL from the correct stream and placed it in the server/destination field, with the key in the separate key field. Re-selecting a YouTube preset can help if the encoder supports it.
- RTMPS certificate or connection error: Confirm the URL begins with the RTMPS protocol, that you copied the RTMPS destination from the lock icon, and that the encoder supports RTMPS. YouTube notes that port 443 may need to be specified. Its troubleshooting page shows a representative
rtmps://...:443/...format, but the host and path must come from your Live Control Room; do not copy the ellipses or substitute a guessed server. See YouTube’s RTMPS help. - Authentication or key error: Check for a misplaced, incomplete, or outdated key. If it was reset, update the encoder with the replacement key. Keep the credential private.
- Signal arrives but health is poor: Compare your configured resolution, frame rate, and codec with YouTube’s current bitrate table. Reduce output demands or improve available upload bandwidth if the connection cannot sustain the selected bitrate.
- Preview appears but the scheduled broadcast is not public: The encoder only sends the signal; for a scheduled stream, use Go live in Live Control Room when the preview is ready.
- Settings do not match an older tutorial: Use the URL and current instructions visible in your Live Control Room. YouTube’s interface and recommended encoder settings can change.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuously looping YouTube channel rather than an event from a live camera, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay running on your computer or home connection; videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. StreamNeo can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required, one free day per account. The monthly option is $9.99 per month.
