To stream a recorded lesson with subtitles that viewers can reliably see, add the lesson to OBS with its subtitles displayed in the video picture, then send the OBS output to YouTube Live. In OBS, the documented route is a VLC Video source with subtitles enabled and the correct subtitle track selected. These visible subtitles are not the same as YouTube closed captions (CC): viewer-toggleable captions require a separate caption-data workflow.
Choose between visible subtitles and YouTube closed captions
Subtitles rendered in the outgoing picture are always visible to viewers and cannot be switched off. YouTube CC, by contrast, gives viewers a captions control. YouTube says live caption data must be sent to YouTube, either embedded in EIA 608/CEA 708 format or through supported software that sends caption data over HTTP POST. Enabling subtitles on an OBS media source does not by itself establish that this caption-data path is active. YouTube’s live caption requirements describe the separate workflow.
- Choose visible subtitles if it is acceptable for every viewer to see the text as part of the picture.
- Choose live CC if viewers must be able to turn captions on and off. Arrange an embedded-caption or supported software workflow, and verify that your encoder and caption software deliver caption data to YouTube.
The documented embedded live-caption workflow supports one caption track. If the lesson’s subtitle file must stay synchronized, test the actual file and caption workflow before scheduling the public event.
Add subtitles to a recorded lesson in OBS
- Install VLC with the right architecture. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC as well.
- Add the lesson as a VLC Video source. In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene and select the recorded lesson. Open that source’s properties.
- Enable and select subtitles. Turn on Subtitles Enabled and choose the correct Subtitle Track. OBS documents these controls for its VLC Video source. Its documentation does not specify every accepted subtitle-file extension, so do not assume a particular file will work without testing it. See OBS Media Sources documentation.
- Check the scene output. Play the source and inspect the OBS preview. Confirm that subtitles appear, are legible against the lesson image, and stay in time with the speech. If the track does not render as intended, prepare a copy with subtitles rendered into the picture, or create a timed text overlay in the OBS scene. Test either alternative with the actual lesson and OBS build before relying on it.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Create or schedule an encoder stream. In YouTube Studio or the Live Control Room, create or schedule a stream for an encoder. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup steps.
- Protect the stream key. Enter the stream URL and key in OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: anyone with access to it may be able to send a broadcast to your stream.
- Use a supported connection and encoding settings. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Its encoder guidance calls for CBR, recommends a 2-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Choose a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate that suit the source and your available upload connection. Consult the current YouTube encoder settings rather than treating a sample bitrate as a guarantee of stability.
- Start OBS and check YouTube’s preview. Start streaming in OBS, then confirm that the Live Control Room receives the picture and sound before you begin the lesson.
Starting bitrate examples
YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance recommends H.264 at 5 Mbps for 1080p/30 fps and 3 Mbps for 720p/30 fps. These are platform recommendations, not guaranteed minimums or assurances that a connection will remain stable; the right setting depends on resolution, frame rate, codec, and upload capacity.

Rehearse before the lesson goes public
Run a full test before the real event. YouTube recommends testing, checking the Live Control Room preview, monitoring audio and video, and checking the watch page on mobile devices. An unlisted stream can be useful for rehearsal. YouTube’s live streaming tips cover its testing guidance.
- Check subtitle timing from beginning to end, including pauses, transitions, and any opening or closing slides.
- Check text size, contrast, and placement on both a desktop screen and a phone. Make sure it does not obscure essential lesson content.
- Confirm that the selected VLC subtitle track appears in the outgoing preview, not just in a local player.
- Listen for the lesson audio and check it alongside the video. If you plan to speak live over the recording, test the microphone and balance beforehand; a microphone is not required when the lesson’s recorded audio is complete.
- If using YouTube CC rather than picture subtitles, verify the captions control and timing on the viewer-facing stream. Do not infer that CC works merely because text appears in OBS’s preview.
When the event is over, stop the encoder after the live event has ended on YouTube.

Troubleshoot subtitles and the stream
| What you see | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| No subtitles in the OBS preview | Subtitles are disabled, the wrong track is selected, or the file is not being read as expected. | Open the VLC Video source properties, enable subtitles, and select the intended track. Confirm VLC is installed and matches OBS’s architecture. Test the exact media file; OBS’s documentation does not promise support for every subtitle-file format. |
| Subtitles appear in OBS but not as YouTube CC | The OBS source is displaying text in the picture; that does not prove a separate caption-data feed is reaching YouTube. | Use YouTube’s embedded-caption or supported HTTP caption-software workflow, then verify CC on the watch page. |
| Subtitles are out of sync or hard to read | The file’s timing or presentation may not suit the lesson or output. | Rehearse the entire lesson, inspect timing and legibility on the viewer-facing output, and adjust the subtitle source. If needed, render the subtitles into the picture or use a timed scene overlay, testing the result before the event. |
| YouTube does not receive the OBS stream | The stream URL or key may be incorrect, or the connection or encoder settings may not be suitable. | Check the URL and key against the current YouTube event, use the recommended RTMPS connection, and review CBR, keyframe interval, bitrate, and upload capacity. |
| The local preview looks right, but viewers report a problem | The viewer-facing stream, device, or caption path may differ from the local OBS preview. | Check the Live Control Room preview and watch page, including a mobile device. For CC, confirm that the separate caption feed is active. |
