To stream a racing game replay continuously on YouTube, play the replay as a video source, capture it in OBS, and send the feed to YouTube Live using an encoder. A PC game can often be captured directly; a replay running on a separate console usually needs a compatible capture device. Continuous playback is not guaranteed: the replay source, encoder, computer and network must all keep running.

Choose how the replay will play

Start with the game or replay file, not the streaming software. Use the game’s replay playback feature, or a saved replay video if the game supports exporting one. Since controls and export options differ by title, check the game’s own instructions rather than assuming a particular menu or shortcut.

  • Confirm that playback can continue without gameplay input or repeated manual controls.
  • Check whether the game permits capturing and broadcasting its replay footage.
  • If the replay stops at the end, determine whether the game can repeat it or whether you need to restart playback. Do not assume a loop option exists.

Choose a capture path

Replay source OBS capture approach Separate capture device?
PC game on the streaming computer Try OBS Game Capture for the game window. Often not needed.
Console or another external video source Use an OBS Video Capture Device source fed by the external device. May be needed, such as a compatible USB HDMI capture device. Check compatibility with the console, computer and OBS before buying.

OBS documents Game Capture and Video Capture Device as source types; the right choice depends on where the replay is playing. See the OBS sources guide.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. Set up the broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room. Create or configure the live stream and obtain its stream key using YouTube’s current Live Control Room workflow.
  2. Enter the stream details in OBS. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service if available, and connect your account or enter the stream key and server details supplied by YouTube. Treat the key like a password: do not show it on screen or share it.
  3. Build the scene. Add the appropriate game or video capture source. Check the preview for the correct replay, aspect ratio and audio before starting.
  4. Start and verify the stream. Start streaming in OBS, then check YouTube Live Control Room for the incoming feed and stream-health warnings.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP, for live ingestion. Its encoder setup guidance covers resolution, frame rate, bitrate and supported codecs; automatic transcoding supplies viewing formats to viewers. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

Set output quality and test it

Choose output settings that both the computer and sustained upload connection can handle. A high setting that works briefly but exceeds available bandwidth can lead to buffering, dropped frames or an unhealthy feed.

  • Video codec: YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 in its encoder guidance. Select a codec supported by your encoder and workflow.
  • Rate control: YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR).
  • Keyframes: Use a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
  • Resolution, frame rate and bitrate: Use YouTube’s bitrate table for the resolution and frame rate you intend to stream. Start within the range your connection can sustain, then test rather than copying a setting without regard to upload capacity.
  • Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio. Verify that the replay’s game audio is actually reaching OBS and is not muted or distorted.

Run a test with representative racing motion and audio, then watch stream health and warnings in YouTube Live Control Room. HDR is optional: only enable it if the replay source and encoder support HDR. YouTube’s HDR live guidance specifies HEVC/H.265 for HDR; see YouTube’s HDR live streaming guidance.

Keep the replay feed running

A continuous broadcast depends on every part of the chain: the replay must keep playing, OBS must keep capturing and encoding, the computer must remain on, and the network must continue sending the feed. Monitor stream health during the broadcast and have someone available or a recovery plan for a long session. The setup guidance documents configuration and monitoring, not guaranteed unattended or indefinite operation.

YouTube also documents HLS ingestion, but it is not the default choice for most ordinary replay streams. HLS uses HTTPS POST/PUT and TS segments, with 1–4 second segment durations and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments; YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP. Use it when the encoder or required workflow calls for HLS, following YouTube’s HLS ingestion guidance.

Record a local backup if needed

OBS can record while streaming. In Settings > Output, configure recording and choose a destination with enough free space for the planned session. OBS recommends MKV: if recording stops ungracefully, it is less likely to lose the whole file than some other containers. Confirm that the recording starts and that the destination is writable before relying on it. See the OBS recording guide.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • YouTube receives no video: Check that OBS is streaming, the stream key and server details match the current YouTube setup, and the correct source is visible in the OBS preview.
  • The preview is black or shows the wrong window: Confirm the replay is playing and that the selected source matches the PC game or external video input. For an external source, check its connection and OBS device selection.
  • Stream health warns about bitrate or the feed stutters: Compare the configured bitrate with YouTube’s guidance for the chosen resolution and frame rate, then lower output demands if the connection cannot sustain them. Test again while the replay is moving.
  • There is no game audio: Check the game’s output, OBS audio meters and the selected audio source; make another short test before a long broadcast.
  • The replay ends or the broadcast drops: Determine whether the game stopped playback, OBS stopped encoding, the computer slept, or the connection failed. Restore the failed part and verify the feed in Live Control Room before leaving it unattended.
  • The local recording is missing or incomplete: Verify the recording path, available storage and OBS recording status. Use MKV for a long recording where interrupted shutdown is a concern.
