The Mac, OBS, video file and internet connection must stay available for the broadcast to continue. Before you start: enable YouTube live streaming
Check channel eligibility before configuring OBS. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, so activate it ahead of your planned broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements.
In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select an encoder stream. You will use its stream URL and stream key in OBS. Treat the key like a password: do not show it in screenshots or share it publicly. If someone else obtains it, reset it in the Live Control Room. Set up a looping video in OBS on your Mac
- Install and open OBS Studio. Create a scene for the broadcast, or select the scene you want to use.
- Add the video. In the Sources box, select + > Media Source. Give the source a name, select the local video file, and enable Loop in its properties. OBS documents Media Source and loop behavior in its Media Sources guide.
- Check the preview. Confirm that the picture fits the canvas and that the video’s audio is audible in the OBS mixer. OBS lists common formats such as MP4, MOV, MKV and WebM, but playback can vary with the file’s codecs and system setup.
- For multiple videos, make a playlist. Add a VLC Video source, choose the files or playlist, and enable Loop Playlist. VLC must be installed for this source to work. Consult the same OBS Media Sources guide for its playlist options.
Looping makes OBS restart the file when playback reaches the end. It does not make the broadcast independent of the Mac: the computer must remain awake, OBS must keep running, the source file must remain accessible, and the network must sustain the upload.

Connect OBS to YouTube and go live
- Enter YouTube’s connection details in OBS. Open Settings > Stream, select YouTube or the applicable YouTube service option, and enter the stream URL and stream key from the Live Control Room. OBS interface labels can change between releases.
- Start the encoder. In OBS, click Start Streaming. This sends the feed to YouTube; it does not necessarily make the broadcast public immediately.
- Check YouTube’s preview and stream health. Wait for the incoming feed in the Live Control Room. Confirm the video and audio, review stream health, and use YouTube’s go-live control when the preview is ready.
- Monitor the broadcast. Keep an eye on OBS and YouTube stream health during the run. If the upload drops or OBS stops, the live feed may end or become unstable.
YouTube recommends RTMPS for RTMP-based ingestion and constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. Before a public run, test with representative movement and audio. For resolution, frame rate, bitrate and keyframe interval, use YouTube’s current recommendations for the exact output you intend to send rather than treating one bitrate as right for every Mac or connection. Compare your sustained upload capacity with the encoder’s output needs, and leave headroom for ordinary network variation. YouTube’s current guidance is in Live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.
Plan for long broadcasts, recording and YouTube rules
Do not rely on YouTube’s archive for a stream over 12 hours
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived. If a stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all. YouTube also warns that DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. If you need a retained copy, enable OBS local recording or use another local archive workflow, and check that you have enough storage. YouTube recommends a local backup in its live stream archiving guidance and describes the DVR limitation in its DVR help page. An external SSD is one possible place to keep a local recording, not a requirement for going live.

Looping does not bypass copyright or monetization policies
A prerecorded video streamed live is still subject to YouTube’s normal rules. Make sure you have the rights or permissions needed for the video, music and other material, and review YouTube’s copyright and live-stream policies before broadcasting. A repeat loop does not itself establish permission, originality or eligibility for monetization. See YouTube copyright guidance and live-streaming requirements.
Mac and OBS or a cloud service?
The local setup gives you direct control of the file and OBS scene, but the Mac and its network remain part of the broadcast chain. YouTube also lists cloud-based options for continuous prerecorded streams that do not require a dedicated PC; its listing establishes the category, not a guarantee of a provider’s performance or terms.
