To stream a podcast episode with captions on YouTube Live, create or schedule a stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, connect an encoder using the stream URL and key, and choose either YouTube’s eligible automatic captions or a compatible caption feed. Test the complete setup before the broadcast: automatic live captions are not available to every stream, and live automatic captions do not carry over to the replay.

Before you set up the broadcast

Confirm your channel can go live

Your channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions within the previous 90 days. Enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours, so check eligibility well before the episode. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.

Choose the video that viewers will see

An encoder-based YouTube Live stream needs a video feed, even when the main content is a podcast. You can use a host camera, a branded still or other suitable visual alongside the audio. Check that your encoder is sending both video and audio; do not assume an audio-only encoder feed will work as a YouTube Live broadcast.

Prepare the audio and captions

Use your existing microphone and recording setup if it produces clear, intelligible speech. YouTube says expensive equipment is not necessary to begin. If you change microphones or audio processing, test them with speech similar to the episode; a caption system cannot make unclear source audio easier to understand reliably. YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend testing with representative audio and monitoring stream health.

Choose a caption method

YouTube documents three relevant routes. Availability and interface labels can change, so confirm the current Live Control Room options before the show. No route should be assumed more accurate than another without testing it on your own material.

Caption route What you need to do Limits to plan for
Automatic live captions For an eligible stream, enable Closed captions and select Automatic captions for that stream. YouTube describes this as an English-only feature being rolled out to channels streaming at normal latency. It is not a universal option, and these live captions do not remain on the archived video.
Captions embedded in the video Set the stream’s caption option to embedded 608/708 and use an encoder that sends compatible EIA 608/CEA 708 captions. Choosing embedded mode alone does not generate captions; your encoder and caption source must supply them. YouTube currently supports one caption track.
Supported caption software over HTTP Enable captions for the event, copy the signed caption-ingestion URL, and provide it to compatible caption software or its operator. YouTube’s event instructions specify a 30- or 60-second broadcast delay. There is one caption feed per stream entry point and one supported caption track. Confirm current support and workflow with YouTube and your caption provider.

For the documented embedded and HTTP options, see YouTube’s live caption requirements. For current automatic-caption eligibility and replay behavior, see YouTube’s automatic-caption guidance.

Create the YouTube Live stream and connect your encoder

  1. Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, start a live stream or schedule one for the episode. Enter the title and other stream details. Scheduling gives you time to prepare the watch page and promote the event. Follow YouTube’s encoder-stream setup steps.
  2. Set up your encoder. Choose a YouTube preset if your streaming software offers one. Otherwise, copy the stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room into the corresponding encoder fields. Treat the key as private: anyone with access to it may be able to send a stream to your broadcast.
  3. Prefer an encrypted connection. Use RTMPS when your encoder supports it. YouTube explains how to encrypt a stream using RTMPS.
  4. Set video and audio output. YouTube’s encoder guide lists RTMP/RTMPS delivery and H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video options; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate encoding; frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Choose a resolution and bitrate from YouTube’s current table that your upload connection and encoder can sustain. Use the exact combination for your intended resolution and frame rate rather than copying a bitrate intended for a different format. See YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrate and resolution guidance.
  5. Select the caption route. For automatic captions, choose the per-stream automatic option if it is available. For supplied captions, configure embedded 608/708 output or the supported HTTP caption feed and verify that the encoder or caption software is actually sending captions.
  6. Start the encoder and check the preview. YouTube recommends setting up an encoder stream at least two hours before an event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before its scheduled start. In Live Control Room, wait for the preview, check the audio and video, and verify captions in the player before selecting Start Streaming. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
  7. Monitor the live broadcast. Watch Live Control Room’s stream health and the player. Confirm speech remains intelligible, the visual is present, and captions continue to appear. If something fails, use the troubleshooting checks below.

Test captions before listeners arrive

  • Use a test or scheduled stream setup and speak at a natural pace using the microphone and processing planned for the episode.
  • Check captions in the actual YouTube player, not only in the encoder or caption software. Confirm timing, readability and that the expected caption track is selected.
  • For automatic captions, confirm the option is available for this particular stream and language. Do not treat a setting visible on another channel or broadcast as proof of eligibility.
  • For embedded captions, verify the encoder is outputting compatible EIA 608/CEA 708 captions. For HTTP captions, verify the correct signed ingestion URL, operator connection and intended 30- or 60-second delay.
  • Test access to the watch page and check stream health using audio and movement comparable to the live show.

After the episode: end the stream and check the replay

When the episode is over, stop the encoder and end the broadcast in Live Control Room as applicable. YouTube automatically archives streams shorter than 12 hours. Do not assume the live caption track will be part of that replay: live automatic captions disappear after the stream ends, while captions for a video on demand are handled separately and may produce different text. Open the archived video and check its captions independently. The distinction is covered in YouTube’s automatic-caption guidance.

Troubleshooting

There is no stream preview

  • Check the stream URL and key. Make sure both fields came from the intended Live Control Room stream and were pasted into the matching encoder fields.
  • Check the encoder output. Confirm it is sending video as well as audio, using a supported configuration, and that the network connection can sustain the selected bitrate.
  • Check stream health. If the preview does not appear, review the encoder status and Live Control Room diagnostics before starting the event.

Automatic captions are missing

  • Confirm you selected automatic captions for this individual stream, not merely a general caption preference.
  • Check whether the channel and stream meet YouTube’s documented availability conditions: English language and normal latency for the feature described as rolling out.
  • If the option is unavailable or unreliable for your needs, prepare a compatible embedded or HTTP caption feed instead of relying on automatic captions.

Supplied captions do not appear

  • For embedded captions, verify that the encoder is outputting EIA 608/CEA 708 data; selecting embedded captions in YouTube alone is not enough.
  • For HTTP captions, confirm that the caption software or operator has the signed ingestion URL for this event and is connected to the correct stream entry point.
  • Check the expected delay and track selection. YouTube currently supports one caption track, and event instructions specify a 30- or 60-second delay for software captions.

Captions are late, inaccurate or hard to read

  • First check the microphone signal and speech clarity. Test with representative audio and adjust the source before changing caption settings.
  • For a supplied feed, check its timing and delivery path with the caption operator or software provider. YouTube’s published workflow includes delay, so captions should not be expected to match speech instantaneously.
  • Do not infer accuracy from the caption route alone; test the actual episode content and review the replay separately.

The replay has no captions or different captions

That can happen because live automatic captions do not persist to the archived video and YouTube generates VOD captions separately. Check the replay’s caption controls and processing rather than treating the live caption display as proof that the archive contains the same captions.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the podcast format is a pre-recorded episode you want to keep looping as a YouTube Live stream, StreamNeo can run the uploaded video from the cloud: upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. The video streams as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Each slot includes 10 GB of storage, pooled across active slots, and the first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. This is for uploaded videos, not a live camera feed; YouTube is the destination.
