Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →For a prerecorded podcast episode, create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, add the episode as an OBS Media Source on your Mac mini, then send OBS’s output to YouTube with the stream key. If you mean a live podcast conversation, use a microphone input in OBS instead of—or alongside—the prerecorded file. The steps below cover both workflows.
Choose the right workflow
| Decision | Prerecorded episode | Live podcast conversation |
|---|---|---|
| Main OBS source | Media Source containing the local audio or video file | Microphone or audio-interface input, with camera or graphics as needed |
| Visual | A still image, title card, or the episode video | Camera, guest layout, graphics, or a simple static scene |
| Audio routing | Playback from the OBS media source | Selected microphone inputs; check the Audio Mixer meters |
| Optional equipment | Usually none beyond the Mac mini and the files you want to use | A microphone; headphones for monitoring; an interface or mixer for more complex setups |
| Key rehearsal check | File playback, visual, levels, and whether looping is intended | Input selection, echo, levels, camera, and guest mix |
These are workflow distinctions based on OBS source capabilities and YouTube’s descriptions of encoder setups, not hands-on test results.
Before you begin
Make sure YouTube Live is enabled
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions within the prior 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before your broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
Check the Mac mini and OBS version
OBS Studio lists Intel or Apple Silicon processors and macOS 11 Big Sur or later as its macOS baseline. Meeting the minimum does not guarantee that a particular combination of resolution, frame rate, encoder, and scene complexity will run smoothly. Use OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard and rehearse on the actual Mac mini. See the OBS system requirements.

Mac mini ports vary by model and configuration. Apple’s 2024 Mac mini specifications list front USB-C ports and a 3.5 mm headphone jack, plus rear Ethernet, HDMI, and Thunderbolt ports. Ethernet is a sensible wired connection when available; the headphone jack can be used for listening. The ports themselves do not create the broadcast scene or encode the stream. Check Apple’s Mac mini specifications for the model you own.
Prepare the media or live inputs
- For an audio-only episode, have the audio file ready and choose a still image or title card so viewers have a visual during playback.
- For a video episode, have the video file ready and decide whether it should play once or loop.
- For a live conversation, connect and select each microphone or interface input you plan to use. A microphone is not required just to play a finished episode.
Set up a prerecorded episode in OBS
Create a scene and visual
- Open OBS Studio and create a scene for the broadcast.
- For an audio episode, add an image source for cover art, a title card, or another appropriate still visual. Check that it is legible in the preview and fills the intended canvas.
- For a video episode, add the video as a Media Source instead of using a still image as the main content.
Add the episode file
- In the scene’s Sources panel, select + and choose Media Source.
- Create a new source, choose the local episode file, and confirm that it plays in the OBS preview.
- Enable looping only if you want the episode to repeat. If you want a one-time broadcast, leave looping off and plan what should happen after playback ends.
- Check the Audio Mixer while the file plays. Adjust its level so playback is audible without clipping, and listen through headphones if available.
OBS documents common media types including MP3, AAC, WAV, MP4, MOV, and MKV, and its Media Source can be set to loop. Container and encoding combinations can behave differently, so verify your actual file in a rehearsal rather than assuming it will play correctly. See the OBS Media Sources guide.

Set up a live podcast conversation
Select microphone inputs
- Connect the microphone or audio interface to the Mac mini.
- In OBS, add an Audio Input Capture source to the scene, or select the intended microphone in the relevant audio settings.
- Speak at the distance and volume you expect to use during the broadcast. Confirm that the Audio Mixer meter responds and that the signal is not clipping.
- Monitor with headphones when possible. Avoid selecting the same device both as a global input and again as a scene source: OBS warns that duplicate capture can cause echo.
OBS supports audio input and output capture sources on macOS. A USB microphone may be a straightforward option for one host; an interface or mixer is useful only when the production needs multiple microphones or more involved routing. See the OBS audio sources guide.
Capture audio from another Mac app only if needed
If the sound is playing in another application rather than being added as a local Media Source, OBS documents a built-in macOS Audio Capture source in OBS Studio 30 and later on macOS 13 Ventura and later. It can capture desktop audio or a selected application. Older configurations may need audio-routing software and manual setup; for a local episode file, a Media Source is the more direct route. See OBS’s macOS audio capture guide.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the scheduled stream. Choose the encoder option.
- In the stream settings, copy the server URL and stream key. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your stream.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Choose YouTube if it is available and connect your account, or select the option to use a stream key. Enter the server URL and key from YouTube if configuring the destination manually.
- Apply the settings, return to the main OBS window, and check that the intended scene is selected.
- Select Start Streaming in OBS. Wait for the preview to appear in YouTube’s Live Control Room, then use YouTube’s controls to start the public broadcast when you are ready.
Do not publish or send your stream key in screenshots, messages, or public notes. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS. For YouTube’s encoder workflow, see Set up your encoder for live streaming.
Choose stream settings and check upload capacity
Use reliable baseline settings
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (not more than four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. For stereo audio, its listed recommendation is 128 Kbps at 44.1 kHz. Choose a video resolution and frame rate that the Mac mini can encode reliably and your upload connection can sustain; there is no single best setting for every model, scene, or connection. See YouTube’s recommended encoder settings.

Leave upload headroom
YouTube advises keeping upload capacity 20% above the aggregate outgoing bitrate. Check the connection’s upload performance, not just download speed, and account for other devices or applications using the same connection. Ethernet is preferable when practical, but a wired connection does not remove the need to check actual upload capacity. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
Use OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point, then run a test with the exact scene and media you intend to broadcast. A minimum-spec computer or a speed-test result alone cannot establish that a demanding scene will encode cleanly.

Rehearse, broadcast, and archive
- Prepare the encoder well ahead of the event. YouTube recommends preparing it at least two hours before a scheduled stream and starting at least 15 minutes before the event.
- Start a test stream or local recording in OBS. Confirm that the episode plays from the beginning, the visual is correct, the audio is present, and there is no unwanted echo or clipping.
- Start sending from OBS and check the preview in YouTube Live Control Room before starting the public event. Confirm you have selected the correct scheduled stream and event page.
- During transmission, monitor both audio and video. For a prerecorded episode, verify playback continues as intended; for a live conversation, watch the meters and listen for routing problems.
- When finished, end the event in YouTube and stop sending from OBS as appropriate. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but confirm that the archive is available before relying on it as your only copy.
See YouTube’s encoder guidance and the OBS Quick Start Guide for preparation and testing recommendations.
Troubleshoot common problems
- You cannot start a live stream: check that the channel is verified and has no live restrictions within the prior 90 days. If this is the first activation, allow up to 24 hours.
- YouTube shows no preview: confirm OBS is streaming to the intended YouTube destination, the server URL and stream key match the selected Live Control Room stream, and OBS is using the intended scene.
- The episode has a picture but no sound: check that the Media Source is playing, its volume is up in the Audio Mixer, and the source is not muted. Rehearse the actual file; support for common file types does not guarantee every file encoding will behave identically.
- The live microphone is silent: confirm the correct input device is selected and connected, then speak and check for movement on the Audio Mixer meter.
- You hear echo: check for the same device captured globally and again as a scene source, and review any monitoring or output routing.
- The stream stutters or drops frames: reduce workload with OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard, simplify the scene, or choose a less demanding resolution or frame rate. Check upload capacity and leave the 20% headroom YouTube recommends.
- The episode stops at the end: enable looping on the Media Source only if repetition is intended; otherwise decide in advance whether to end the event or transition to another scene.
- The archive is missing: verify availability in YouTube after the stream rather than assuming it is the only saved copy.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep prerecorded episodes looping on YouTube without leaving the Mac mini running, StreamNeo is a cloud service for uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It streams to YouTube only. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams what you uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. StreamNeo is not a camera-based live podcast setup; it plays uploaded videos.
StreamNeo’s monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free first day.
