To stream PC games to an NVIDIA SHIELD TV today, install Sunshine on the gaming PC and Moonlight on SHIELD, connect both to the same home network, pair them, then launch a game or desktop session in Moonlight. The PC renders the game; SHIELD receives the video and sends your controller input back to the PC.

What you need before you start

  • A gaming PC capable of running the game and output mode you want to stream.
  • An NVIDIA SHIELD TV connected to your television.
  • Sunshine on the PC and Moonlight on SHIELD. Moonlight’s setup guide, edited February 27, 2025, covers this current documented pairing path: Moonlight Setup Guide.
  • Both devices connected to the same home network. Ethernet is preferable when practical, especially for demanding resolutions or more consistent delivery.
  • A controller supported by Moonlight and the game, if you want to play from the couch. Compatibility can vary by controller and game.

Set up Sunshine and Moonlight

  1. Install Sunshine on the PC. Follow the Sunshine installation instructions linked from the Moonlight Setup Guide. Sunshine may require a reboot to complete setup and enable controller emulation. On first run, create a login for Sunshine’s local settings interface.
  2. Install Moonlight on SHIELD TV. Open the app and make sure the PC and SHIELD are on the same home network.
  3. Pair the devices. Select the PC when it appears in Moonlight. Moonlight will show a PIN; enter it on the PC and accept the pairing prompt.
  4. Choose what to launch. Select a listed app such as Steam or Remote Desktop. Moonlight’s guide also explains streaming the desktop. If a game or launcher is missing, add it in Sunshine; some manually added apps may need configuration to launch correctly.

Choose a network connection

For its legacy GameStream setup, NVIDIA recommends wiring both the gaming PC and SHIELD to the network over Gigabit Ethernet. It describes one wired endpoint as a good arrangement and 5 GHz 802.11ac Wi-Fi as its minimum recommendation. These are practical local-network principles, not a performance guarantee for every Sunshine and Moonlight setup. See NVIDIA’s recommended SHIELD TV setup.

Local streaming traffic travels across your home network; NVIDIA’s legacy guide says it does not require fast internet access. If the router lacks enough Ethernet ports, a Gigabit switch can add ports. If Wi-Fi is your only option, signal strength, interference and other network traffic can affect consistency. No universal latency figure applies to every home.

Choose what to stream: a game, Steam, or the desktop

Launch target Useful when Trade-off
Individual game You want to open a game directly from Moonlight. A game that is not listed may need to be added in Sunshine, and its launcher or settings may require troubleshooting.
Steam You want to browse a library from the TV and use a couch-friendly interface. Steam’s availability and launch behavior depend on the host setup; do not assume an NVIDIA Games Steam tile exists on every current installation.
Desktop session You need to start an app manually or use a title that is not exposed as a separate launch option. Desktop use can be less convenient from the couch, particularly if the app expects a mouse and keyboard.

Sunshine includes Steam and Remote Desktop, and Moonlight documents adding other games and apps in its setup guide. NVIDIA’s old GameStream documentation says manually added games are not automatically optimized; that behavior refers to the legacy GeForce Experience route, not a general statement about Sunshine.

Improve picture quality and reduce interruptions

  • Use Ethernet where possible. Wired connections are NVIDIA’s preferred arrangement in its GameStream network guidance and are a sensible starting point for a steadier local stream.
  • Try the TV’s Game or Gaming picture mode. NVIDIA says many TVs offer this mode to reduce display-side input delay; the statement is guidance, not a measured reduction for every TV. See NVIDIA’s setup recommendations.
  • Lower bitrate if frames or packets are being dropped. NVIDIA’s legacy guide recommends reducing bitrate when the network cannot sustain the stream. This can improve delivery at the expense of image quality.
  • Reduce resolution or refresh-rate demands if needed. The host GPU, Moonlight client, TV and HDMI input must all support the output you select. A PC being able to render a game does not by itself guarantee that the complete stream path supports a particular mode.

What to know about 4K and HDR

NVIDIA’s published 4K thresholds are specific to legacy GameStream and should not be treated as universal minimum requirements for Sunshine and Moonlight. For GameStream, NVIDIA says 4K streaming is available only to SHIELD TV; it recommends a GeForce GTX 1080 or better for most games, lists Maxwell- or Pascal-based minimum GPU tiers for some games, calls for an Intel Core i5 or better, and strongly recommends wiring the PC. Its listed setup also requires SHIELD on the same network by Ethernet and a 4K TV connected through an HDMI 2.0 input. Details are in NVIDIA’s GameStream 4K requirements.

NVIDIA’s HDR instructions are also legacy GameStream-specific: they require an HDR-10-capable setup and say HDR works only when a game is automatically detected and launched from NVIDIA Games. The instructions exclude Steam Big Picture and manually added apps. Do not assume those limitations or requirements describe every Sunshine and Moonlight configuration.

Use NVIDIA GameStream only if the old option is still available

NVIDIA’s support pages still describe enabling GameStream in GeForce Experience and pairing through NVIDIA Games on SHIELD, using an account or PIN. Those pages document the older branded workflow; their continued availability online does not establish that GameStream remains available in current NVIDIA software or on every SHIELD installation. If your PC still exposes the GameStream/SHIELD setting, the NVIDIA pairing instructions may apply. Otherwise, use the Sunshine and Moonlight steps above.

Troubleshoot pairing and launch problems

The PC does not appear in Moonlight

  • Confirm that the PC and SHIELD are connected to the same home network, rather than separate guest or isolated networks.
  • Make sure Sunshine is running on the PC and check that the PC’s firewall permits the stream.
  • Pair on the home network first. Remote access is a separate configuration and security task; do not expose ports to the public internet casually.

The PIN pairing fails

Start a fresh pairing attempt in Moonlight and enter the displayed PIN in Sunshine’s PC-side prompt. Confirm Sunshine is running and that the local settings interface is accessible using the login configured at first run. Moonlight’s setup guide covers the pairing flow.

A game or launcher is missing or will not start

Add the game’s executable or launcher in Sunshine, or launch the desktop session and start it manually. Adding an app makes it available to launch; it does not guarantee that every game’s launcher, input method or configuration will work without adjustment.

The stream stutters or the image degrades

Try Ethernet, reduce the stream bitrate, or lower the selected output demands. A lower bitrate can reduce dropped frames or packets when the network is the constraint, but it also reduces image quality. NVIDIA documents this trade-off for GameStream in its network guidance.
