Use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer to play compatible gaming VOD files sequentially without re-encoding: put their filenames in the desired order in a text list, then run ffmpeg -f concat -i vod-list.txt -c copy joined.mp4. The line order controls playback order. If the files’ streams are incompatible, use the concat filter and re-encode instead.
Use the concat demuxer for compatible VOD files
The concat demuxer reads a text file as a sequence of media inputs. It is usually the simplest way to join recordings when you want to preserve their encoded streams rather than re-encode them. FFmpeg requires the files to have the same streams, including matching codecs and time bases; see the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.
1. Create an ordered list
In Ubuntu, open a terminal in the directory containing the recordings and create vod-list.txt with one entry per file:
file 'gameplay-01.mp4'
file 'gameplay-02.mp4'
file 'gameplay-03.mp4'Put the entries in the exact order you want them played. The demuxer follows the list from top to bottom, so explicit entries are safer than relying on shell wildcard sorting.

2. Join the files without re-encoding
Run:
ffmpeg -f concat -i vod-list.txt -c copy joined.mp4-f concat selects the concat demuxer, -i vod-list.txt supplies the ordered list, and -c copy copies the encoded streams into the output without decoding and encoding them again. This is fast and does not add generational quality loss, but it works only when the inputs and output container are compatible.
FFmpeg must be installed and available in your Ubuntu environment. The Ubuntu package version and build options vary, and a particular version or codec configuration is not established here; check your machine if a specific codec is required.
Check compatibility before using stream copy
For concat-demuxer stream copy, each file needs the same streams and matching stream properties such as codecs and time bases. Gaming captures may differ if recording settings, audio tracks, or other stream characteristics changed between sessions. - Compare the video and audio streams in each VOD before joining.
- Check that files have the same track layout; one recording with an extra audio stream can make the set incompatible.
- Keep the output extension and container appropriate for the streams being copied. Stream copy cannot create stream information the target container requires but the inputs do not provide.
If the command fails, produces an invalid file, or the joined output has playback problems, do not assume the recordings can be fixed by changing only the filename list. Inspect the inputs and use a consistent target configuration with the concat filter when re-encoding is necessary.
Use the concat filter when files need re-encoding
The concat filter joins decoded streams and is the appropriate route when inputs must be converted to consistent settings. Because filters operate on decoded frames, this method cannot be combined with -c copy. The right output settings depend on the actual video, audio, subtitle, and container details, so there is no single safe normalization command for every collection of gaming VODs. Consult FFmpeg’s concatenation guidance and command-line documentation when building a filter command for your streams.
Why not simply concatenate the files at the byte level?
FFmpeg’s concat protocol joins files at the file level, and it is suitable only for formats whose containers support that operation. The concat protocol documentation identifies MPEG-1, MPEG-2 program streams, and DV as formats that support file-level concatenation. Do not treat byte-level concatenation as a general way to join ordinary MP4 or MKV gaming recordings; use the demuxer or filter appropriate to the inputs instead.

Troubleshoot common problems
FFmpeg cannot open a listed file
Check that each path is correct relative to the directory where you run FFmpeg, or use a suitable full path. Ordinary quoted entries handle filenames containing spaces. For unusual characters, verify the concat-list syntax rather than assuming shell quoting rules apply identically inside the list.
The list is rejected as unsafe
The concat demuxer’s safe-path rule permits relative paths with portable characters whose components do not begin with a period. For trusted local files outside those rules, -safe 0 can disable the check, for example:

The output has gaps, overlap, or timestamp artifacts
The concat demuxer positions each next file using the previous file’s duration. FFmpeg warns that an inaccurate duration—such as an estimate or one affected by a truncated recording—can cause artifacts. Check that the source files are complete and that their duration metadata is sensible. The demuxer documentation describes a duration directive for overriding a stored duration when you know the correct value.
Options appear to have no effect
FFmpeg applies options to the next input or output, so placement matters. Keep input options before their corresponding input and output options before the output filename; specify inputs before outputs. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation.
