You can stream a playlist of MP4 and MKV files from a VPS to YouTube Live with FFmpeg. The extensions do not tell you whether the files can be joined directly: first check their video and audio streams, then either use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer with stream copy for compatible files or normalize and transcode mismatched ones. Send the result to the RTMPS ingest URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room, and test the feed before making it public.
What you need before you start
- A VPS with the video files available locally, FFmpeg (including
ffprobe), enough CPU capacity if you need to transcode, and outbound bandwidth for a continuous live feed. - A YouTube channel eligible to live stream. YouTube’s current onboarding guidance says the channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and meet its minimum age requirement of 16. Confirm eligibility in YouTube Studio before configuring the VPS: YouTube live-streaming eligibility.
- A stream created or scheduled in Live Control Room, with its ingest URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not expose it in public repositories, screenshots, logs, or shared shell history.
Instructions and settings below reflect YouTube and FFmpeg documentation checked on October 3, 2026. YouTube’s interface and published recommendations can change, so use the values shown for your stream in Live Control Room.
Inspect the MP4 and MKV files
MP4 and MKV are containers; either can hold different codecs, resolutions, frame rates, audio tracks, and subtitles. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer expects inputs with matching streams, codecs, and time bases. A mixed-extension playlist may work without conversion, but the extensions alone cannot establish that.
Check representative files with ffprobe
Run this for files from both formats, including any that may have different audio tracks or other unusual properties:

ffprobe -hide_banner -i "episode.mp4"
Review the listed video and audio streams, codecs, dimensions, frame rates, and duration. Confirm that each file has the tracks you intend to send. Subtitles and additional audio tracks may need to be omitted or handled separately rather than assumed to map identically across the playlist.
Choose stream copy or normalization
- Use stream copy when the files have compatible streams and YouTube accepts their codecs. FFmpeg’s
-c copypasses compressed streams through without decoding or encoding, which avoids an additional lossy encode and uses less CPU. It cannot resize, filter, or convert codecs, and can fail when the inputs or output container are incompatible. - Normalize and transcode first when files differ in codec, dimensions, frame rate, audio layout, or other output requirements. Convert them to a common format before concatenation, or use an FFmpeg workflow that transcodes the joined output. Transcoding uses CPU and can reduce quality through another lossy encode; test a representative segment and leave VPS headroom.
These are compatibility choices, not rules based on filename: not every playlist containing both MP4 and MKV needs transcoding.
Create an ordered FFconcat playlist
Place a plain-text playlist alongside the media, for example:
ffconcat version 1.0
file 'part-01.mp4'
file 'part-02.mkv'
file 'part-03.mp4'
The first line must be exactly ffconcat version 1.0 for automatic format recognition. The concat demuxer reads the listed files in order and adjusts timestamps so each follows the previous file’s duration. It is sequential playout, not an edit that guarantees seamless transitions. Files with unequal stream lengths or inaccurate duration metadata can create gaps or artifacts. Test transitions; if a source’s duration is inaccurate, FFmpeg supports a duration directive, but validate any adjustment with a test.

Keep paths simple and relative where possible. FFmpeg’s safe-path default rejects some unsafe paths and directives; filenames with spaces or special characters need correct quoting or escaping. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation for syntax and path rules.
Configure the YouTube live feed
Copy the ingest URL and key
Create or schedule the broadcast in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and copy the displayed stream URL and key into your FFmpeg configuration. Use the RTMPS endpoint shown there. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which protects the RTMP connection with TLS/SSL; do not assume the default RTMP URL and RTMPS URL are interchangeable. Follow the exact endpoint and key arrangement displayed in the control room. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance and encoder stream settings.
Use a key-safe configuration
Avoid typing the key into a command that may be saved in shell history or captured in process listings. Use a permissions-restricted configuration or environment variables managed for the streaming account, and ensure logs do not print credentials. The example below uses environment-variable placeholders; configure them privately with the exact values and syntax for your endpoint.
Choose output settings and bandwidth
YouTube’s published guidance for RTMP/RTMPS lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. For standard SDR, its guidance lists Rec. 709 and 8-bit; recommended advanced audio settings include 44.1 kHz stereo and 128 Kbps stereo. Match the output to your source, encoder, and selected YouTube settings rather than applying a preset blindly.

Published H.264 bitrate examples
| Target video | YouTube recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
These figures are YouTube’s H.264 recommendations, verified October 3, 2026; they are video bitrates, not total network use. Add audio and protocol overhead. YouTube recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom, so the VPS must sustain more than the configured combined bitrate continuously. An advertised VPS port speed alone does not establish sustained throughput. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate guidance when choosing another resolution or frame rate.
Send the playlist from FFmpeg
Compatible inputs: illustrative stream-copy command
For files with compatible streams and a first video and audio track in every file, this is a schematic example:
ffmpeg -re -f concat -safe 1 -i playlist.ffconcat
-map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -c copy
-f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL/$YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY"
This command is illustrative, not a tested guarantee. Confirm the local FFmpeg build and the endpoint format supplied by YouTube; some URLs already include a path or key arrangement, so do not append components blindly. Check that all inputs have the mapped first video and audio streams. Change or omit maps if the track layouts differ. The -re option reads at native frame rate, which FFmpeg documents as useful when flow speed matters, such as live streaming. See FFmpeg command-line documentation.
When you need transcoding
Replace stream copy with explicit encoders and settings appropriate to your source and VPS. H.264 video with AAC audio is a conventional SDR target, but set dimensions, frame rate, bitrate, CBR behavior, and keyframe interval to match the selected YouTube guidance. The concat compatibility rules still matter: normalize files with unlike streams before joining, or use a tested filter-based workflow that decodes and re-encodes the sequence. Check CPU utilization and output stability before relying on a long broadcast.

Plan for end-of-list and disconnects
The example sends one pass through the playlist. It does not guarantee an infinite loop, restart after process failure, or recovery after YouTube drops the connection. Configure looping or list rotation for the installed FFmpeg version and test the end of the list, file transitions, and network interruptions. A FIFO muxer’s recovery options are a separate configuration path; they are not automatic behavior of the command above.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test, start, and monitor the broadcast
- Start FFmpeg while the stream is set up in Live Control Room. Use a test with motion and audio representative of the intended broadcast.
- Wait for the encoder feed to appear in the YouTube preview. Review stream-health messages before starting the public broadcast.
- Monitor playback and audio/video quality after going live. On the VPS, watch sustained outbound traffic, CPU load if transcoding, disk reads, and picture and sound at every file transition.
- If you make changes to the playlist or encoder parameters, test again before relying on the updated feed.
YouTube’s testing and network guidance is available in its encoder settings help.
Troubleshoot common failures
- FFmpeg reports incompatible streams or fails at a file boundary: compare
ffprobeoutput for the inputs. Normalize differing codecs, stream layouts, dimensions, frame rates, or time bases; check that mapped audio and video tracks exist in every file. - There is a gap, freeze, or artifact between files: check actual stream lengths and duration metadata, and test the transition. The concat demuxer schedules the next input using the prior file’s duration; unequal track lengths or inaccurate durations can affect timestamps.
- YouTube does not receive the feed: verify the stream key and the precise URL from Live Control Room, confirm that the stream is active and the channel is eligible, and use the displayed RTMPS endpoint. Keep the key private while correcting configuration.
- Stream health shows dropped frames or the VPS disconnects: compare total video, audio, and overhead against sustained outbound capacity, preserving YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Check VPS network stability rather than relying only on its advertised port rate.
- Audio or video is missing: inspect each file’s streams and review
-mapselections. A command mapping0:v:0and0:a:0assumes those tracks exist consistently. - FFmpeg stops at the end of the playlist: the illustrative command runs one pass. Add and test a loop or rotation strategy for your FFmpeg version; do not assume it will reconnect or resume unattended after a dropped connection.
- The VPS cannot keep up with transcoding: test a representative segment, lower the output workload if appropriate, or use compatible sources with stream copy. Stream copy cannot perform resizing or codec conversion.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an always-on YouTube channel rather than managing FFmpeg on a VPS, StreamNeo plays uploaded videos from the cloud: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams of uploaded videos, not camera broadcasts. Start the free first day.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a playlist contain both MP4 and MKV files?
Yes. The extensions do not decide compatibility; the codecs and stream layouts inside the files do.
Does this FFmpeg example stream forever?
No. It sends one pass through the playlist; a looping or rotation setup must be configured and tested separately.
