You can use VLC to play a continuous kirtan playlist, but VLC’s documented playlist-streaming example does not establish that VLC by itself can send a compatible feed to YouTube Live. YouTube requires an encoder connection using the stream URL and key shown in YouTube Studio. Prepare and repeat your playlist in VLC, then confirm that your complete setup reaches YouTube’s preview and meets its encoder requirements before relying on it for a broadcast.
What you need to know before you begin
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream, a computer with the kirtan recordings, and a reliable internet connection.
- Recordings you own or are authorized to broadcast. Religious or devotional music is not automatically free to rebroadcast, and rights to a recording may be separate from rights to the composition.
- An encoder setup that YouTube can ingest. YouTube’s workflow uses a stream URL and stream key; the cited VLC documentation shows playlist streaming over HTTP on a local network, not a verified direct VLC-to-YouTube configuration.
VLC documents stream output and a playlist workflow that keeps output open between successive media files. That is useful for continuous playback, but it does not prove that a particular VLC version, operating system, or configuration supports YouTube’s recommended protocol and settings. Validate the entire signal path on the machine you will use.
Check YouTube livestream eligibility
YouTube’s current “Get started with live streaming” guidance says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. It also sets a minimum age of 16 for livestreaming. Check the channel’s status and current YouTube Studio prompts before planning the event: YouTube: Get started with live streaming.
Prepare a continuous kirtan playlist in VLC
Organize and authorize the recordings
Put the tracks in the intended order and confirm that each file plays in VLC. Decide whether the sequence should repeat or stop after the final track. VLC can take successive media files as playlist inputs and keep stream output open across transitions in its documented workflow; the precise playlist controls and labels can vary by VLC version and operating system.

Before adding a track, verify permission for the specific recording and intended YouTube broadcast. A claim, block, or other rights issue can interrupt or limit a livestream even if the playlist plays normally on your computer.
Choose repeat behavior and test transitions
Use VLC’s playlist repeat controls for the sequence you want, and play through track boundaries before going live. Listen for gaps, abrupt cuts, unexpected silence, mismatched volume, and files that fail to load. An uninterrupted VLC playlist only confirms local playback; it does not establish an uninterrupted internet feed or YouTube stream.

Create the YouTube Live event and protect the stream key
- Open YouTube Studio and create or schedule a livestream in Live Control Room.
- In the event’s stream settings, copy the current stream URL and stream key into the matching fields in the encoder you are using. YouTube describes the connection step as entering the server URL and stream key into the encoder: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not include it in a public screenshot, article, or shared message. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
- Start the encoder feed and wait for the YouTube preview and stream-health indicators. For a scheduled event, follow Live Control Room’s prompts; the operator may need to click “Go live” after the preview appears.
Do not assume VLC’s local HTTP example uses the same destination or protocol as YouTube. If your VLC build cannot produce a compatible feed, use an encoder that supports YouTube’s protocol and can accept VLC’s output. The available documentation does not verify a particular bridge, VLC command, or platform-specific setup, so confirm your chosen configuration with a test event rather than relying on an unverified recipe.
Match the encoder to YouTube’s settings
YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP, and publishes codec, bitrate, and keyframe guidance. Its supported video codecs include H.264, H.265, and AV1; audio codecs include AAC and MP3. It recommends constant bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum recommended interval of four seconds. Bitrate recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so choose the value for your actual output rather than applying one universal bitrate to a mostly static devotional stream. Check that the encoder’s outgoing resolution and frame rate are appropriate for the source and that its protocol, codecs, bitrate mode, and keyframe interval match YouTube guidance. The VLC documentation cited here does not establish that every VLC build exposes or supports these settings for a YouTube-bound feed.
Test the complete broadcast before announcing it
- Use a representative section of the actual playlist, including a transition between tracks.
- Start the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event, as YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend: YouTube live streaming tips.
- Confirm that YouTube receives the feed, the preview shows the expected image, the audio is clear, and stream health is acceptable.
- Monitor the event after it begins. Reliability depends on the encoder configuration, computer, network, source playback, and YouTube ingestion—not just VLC’s playlist.
End the stream and check the archive
When the broadcast is finished, stop the encoder feed and follow Live Control Room’s instructions to end the event. YouTube states that streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; this does not establish an archive guarantee for streams lasting 12 hours or longer. Check the resulting video in YouTube Studio rather than assuming it is available immediately.

Troubleshoot common failures
