To stream a gaming VOD stored in Google Drive as a YouTube Live event, make the video available on your computer, then use an encoder such as OBS to send it to YouTube. In YouTube Studio, create the event and give the encoder the stream URL and stream key. A Drive share link is for viewing; it is not a substitute for the encoder’s live feed.
Before you start
- Your YouTube channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. First-time live-streaming enablement may take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of your broadcast. YouTube also sets a minimum age of 16 for live streaming. YouTube’s live-streaming requirements
- You need access to the VOD file and an encoder installed on a computer that can play it reliably.
- Check that the computer has enough free storage if you plan to download or mirror the video. If the VOD is important, keep a local copy even if you expect YouTube to archive the event.
Make the Google Drive video available to the encoder
Google Drive can play a video in a browser, but that playback feature does not send a live feed to YouTube. Use a local file as the encoder’s media source instead of assuming a Drive sharing URL will work as an input. Google Drive video playback information
Option 1: Download the VOD
- Open Google Drive in a browser and locate the video.
- Select the file and choose Download.
- Wait for the download to finish, then confirm the file opens locally and has audio before setting up the stream.
The file owner can disable downloads for people with viewer or commenter access. If you do not see Download, ask the owner for permission or a downloadable copy. Google’s download help also notes that browser third-party-cookie settings or extensions can interfere with downloads; a high recent volume of views or downloads can trigger a temporary restriction that typically resets within 24 hours. Option 2: Use Drive for desktop
Drive for desktop can stream files while online or mirror them onto the computer. For a more reliable broadcast, make the VOD available offline before going live rather than relying on an online-only file and an uninterrupted internet connection. Mirrored files take up local disk space; streaming uses less local storage but remains dependent on connectivity and file availability. Google Drive for desktop: stream and mirror files

Set up the YouTube event and encoder
- Create the event: In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a live stream. Follow the encoder workflow in YouTube’s guide to creating a stream with an encoder.
- Copy the connection details: Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that event into the encoder’s stream settings. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send video to your stream. Do not publish it or share it with people who should not control the broadcast.
- Add the local VOD: In your encoder, add the downloaded or offline-available video as a media source. OBS is one option; its exact interface can vary by version, so look for its media-source feature rather than trying to use a Drive share link.
- Choose the connection and output: For a typical gaming VOD restream, use the encoder’s standard YouTube/RTMPS setup. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension of RTMP. Set resolution and frame rate to match the file and choose an output bitrate your upload connection can sustain.
- Check the preview: Start the encoder feed and confirm that the video and audio appear correctly in YouTube’s preview before starting the public event. Test a section with motion and sound similar to the actual VOD.
- Go live and monitor: Start the event in YouTube Studio when the preview is ready. Watch stream health during the broadcast and adjust output settings if the connection becomes unstable.
- End cleanly: End the event in YouTube Studio, then stop the encoder. Confirm the archive is available if you need it.
Encoder settings that matter
YouTube’s general encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS video, and a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. YouTube supports frame rates up to 60 fps. Its recommended bitrate depends on resolution and frame rate, so use the applicable value in YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance rather than choosing a number that your connection cannot maintain.
Allow upload headroom: YouTube’s streaming tips recommend 20% bandwidth headroom and advise checking outbound upload bandwidth rather than treating download speed as a proxy. Test the actual encoder, audio, and video motion before the event, then monitor stream health while live. YouTube streaming tips

HLS is not the usual first choice for a standard VOD restream. YouTube documents it for particular cases, including HDR or codecs outside RTMP support; HLS uses segments and has higher latency. OBS is listed among encoders that support HLS output. Use it only when your format or workflow calls for it. YouTube’s HLS setup guide
How Drive availability options compare
| Method | Local disk use | Offline reliability | Connection dependence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Download in a browser | Uses space for a local copy | Available locally after the download completes | Internet is needed to download, not to read the completed local file |
| Drive for desktop mirroring | Uses space for mirrored files | Can be made available offline | Internet is needed to sync; a completed local copy can be used offline |
| Drive for desktop streaming | Uses less local storage | Not reliable offline unless the file is made available offline | Depends on internet access and Drive file availability while streaming |
Copyright, reused footage, and the live archive
Streaming a recording does not remove the need to have rights to its contents. Before broadcasting, check that you have permission for the game footage where required and for music, overlays, or other material included in the VOD. YouTube may apply its usual copyright and content rules to a live stream and its archive. A live broadcast also does not by itself guarantee monetization or make reused content eligible for monetization; those outcomes depend on YouTube’s applicable policies and review.

YouTube automatically archives streams shorter than 12 hours, but streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. If the VOD or the resulting broadcast matters to you, keep a local recording as a backup rather than relying solely on YouTube’s archive. YouTube encoder stream and archive guidance

The Drive download is blocked or will not start
Check browser third-party-cookie settings and extensions that may interfere. If the file has had many recent views or downloads, Drive may have applied a temporary restriction; Google says it typically resets within 24 hours. Try again later or ask the owner for another permitted way to provide the file.
The video plays in Drive, but the encoder cannot use it
Drive playback does not mean the encoder has a direct live-source URL. Download the video or make it available offline, then add the local file through the encoder’s media-source feature.

The stream drops frames or YouTube reports poor health
Check the actual outbound upload bandwidth while the encoder is running. Leave headroom, then lower the bitrate or resolution if the connection cannot sustain the current output. Test again before restarting the event.
The broadcast ended, but there is no archive
Check the stream duration. YouTube may not capture streams longer than 12 hours; keep a local recording when an archive is important.
Or let it run in the cloud
