You can stream recorded gameplay on YouTube around the clock by playing the video in OBS, sending OBS’s output to a YouTube broadcast, and keeping the computer, OBS, source video, and internet connection running. YouTube supports encoder-based gameplay streams, but a continuous broadcast is not the same as a guaranteed complete VOD: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, and does not promise a complete archive for a longer session.

Before you start: check YouTube live-stream eligibility

Make sure live streaming is enabled for your channel before setting up OBS. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave this check until the moment you intend to start. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.

Prepare a recorded gameplay video in OBS

Choose how to play the VOD

For a video file stored on the OBS computer, add it to a scene using a media source. Configure the source to play the recording you want to broadcast; if you want repeated playback, enable looping in the source’s properties. Confirm the file plays through in OBS and that its audio reaches the broadcast mix. OBS is sending a live encoder output even though the material is prerecorded.

For PC gameplay captured live, capture the game in OBS and compose the scenes you need. If the gameplay comes from a console, you may need a capture device to bring the console’s HDMI output into the OBS computer; that is conditional, not a requirement for PC gameplay. YouTube describes encoder-based gameplay and external production equipment as options rather than mandatory equipment. Its encoder setup guide outlines the YouTube side of the process.

Check the audio and rights

Listen to the complete OBS mix before going live. Game audio, voice commentary, and any other audio included in the recording will be part of the stream. Do not assume that owning a game or recording its gameplay gives you blanket permission to rebroadcast every cutscene or soundtrack continuously. Check the relevant publisher terms and the rights covering the specific footage and audio. YouTube says live content must follow its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service, and may remove or restrict streams that do not.

Create a YouTube broadcast and connect OBS

  1. Create the broadcast: In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live. Create a stream, or use Manage → Schedule stream if you want an upcoming watch page. Set the title, privacy, category, and other applicable details. YouTube allows scheduled streams to use new or reused settings.
  2. Choose OBS’s YouTube connection: In OBS, open Settings → Stream. Select YouTube and either connect your YouTube account or use the stream-key method. Labels may vary by OBS version.
  3. For a stream key, copy the connection details: In YouTube Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key and enter them in OBS’s stream settings. Treat the key like a password: do not show it in screenshots or recordings, and do not share it.
  4. Verify the preview: Start streaming from OBS and wait for the video preview in Live Control Room. Confirm that the intended source is playing and that audio is present before you make the broadcast public.
  5. Start the YouTube broadcast: Follow the prompts in Live Control Room. A scheduled stream may require you to press Go Live; whether it starts automatically depends on the broadcast’s settings, including Auto-start. Check the Studio status rather than assuming that sending video from OBS has made the public broadcast live.

The OBS Project’s YouTube setup guide covers account linking and stream setup. Exact labels and behavior can differ by OBS version and YouTube Studio changes.

Choose between one 24/7 broadcast and saved VODs

A YouTube live broadcast and its saved archive are separate outcomes. YouTube Help states: “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” Its guidance does not promise a complete archive for one continuous broadcast that runs longer than 12 hours. If archive completeness matters, schedule separate broadcasts shorter than 12 hours, plan the transitions, and check that each stream’s archive is available afterward. This is a cautious approach based on YouTube’s stated threshold, not a guarantee about every longer stream.

One continuous broadcast suits a channel whose priority is an always-live destination. Several shorter broadcasts are a better fit when having separate, automatically archived VODs is important. YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation describes a 24/7 feed that can remain active while a separate broadcast covers a subset of its content. That is an API-level model; it does not mean ordinary OBS users have a special 24/7 switch or that a local computer will run indefinitely.

Archive, recording, DVR, and automatic-start or stop controls appear in YouTube’s API documentation, but they should not be treated as settings every OBS user must change. The API reference explains how recording and DVR choices can affect when playback is available after a broadcast ends: YouTube Live Broadcasts API reference. DVR rewind is finite and may vary with configuration and device; do not promise a viewer can rewind to the beginning of an all-day stream.

Keep OBS running and monitor the stream

With the local OBS method, the entire chain has to keep working: the video source must play, OBS must remain open and streaming, the computer must stay powered, and the network connection must remain available. YouTube’s documentation describes the 24/7 broadcast model, not guaranteed uptime for a consumer computer or home connection.

Troubleshoot common failures

YouTube will not let the channel go live

Check that the channel is verified and has no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. If this is the first activation, allow up to 24 hours for live streaming to become available.

OBS is streaming, but the public broadcast has not started

Look at Live Control Room. Sending video from OBS does not always complete the YouTube start step for a scheduled broadcast. Follow Studio’s prompts and press Go Live if required by the broadcast settings.

The preview is blank or shows the wrong content

Check that the intended OBS scene is active and that its media source is selected, playing, and pointed at the correct file. For console footage, confirm the capture device is connected and providing a signal. Recheck the YouTube preview before starting the public broadcast.

There is no audio, or the wrong audio is heard

Check the source’s audio settings and OBS’s audio mixer while the recording plays. If the stream contains game music or other third-party audio, confirm you have the rights to retransmit it; otherwise remove or replace that audio before broadcasting.

The stream stops when unattended

OBS depends on the local computer, source playback, and network staying operational. Check whether the computer slept, OBS stopped, the media source ended, or the connection was interrupted. For a genuinely continuous feed, plan how you will detect and restart a local failure, or use a cloud service that runs independently of the home computer.

A long stream is missing or incomplete as a VOD

Do not rely on one broadcast longer than 12 hours to create a complete archive. For saved VODs, divide programming into broadcasts shorter than YouTube’s stated automatic-archive threshold and check each archive after ending its broadcast.
