You can use FFmpeg to send a church sermon feed to YouTube Live, but keeping a stream available around the clock takes more than starting one encoder process. You need a source (a live camera or mixer feed, or a prerecorded sermon), a computer that stays on, YouTube’s current ingest details, and a plan to monitor and restart the stream if it ends. The right FFmpeg setup depends on the source and whether you use RTMP or HLS; there is no single command that is reliable for every setup.
Choose the source before configuring FFmpeg
The basic path is media source → FFmpeg on an always-available host → YouTube ingest → viewers. Decide whether you are sending a live service or looping recordings; they require different input handling.
Live camera or mixer feed
For a live service, FFmpeg must capture the camera or production system’s video and route the mixer’s audio into the same output stream. A camera, microphone or mixer, streaming computer, and reliable internet are common setup considerations, but a church equipment checklist is not a tested minimum-specification guide. Do not use input looping as a substitute for a live source: a camera feed should be captured continuously, and audio routing must be configured for the equipment and operating system in use.

Prerecorded sermons
For a prerecorded stream, FFmpeg can read a file and its documentation describes input looping options. That does not make every file-and-command combination suitable for 24/7 output. End-of-file behavior, timestamps, audio/video synchronization, encoding and the chosen YouTube ingest protocol all matter. Test the actual media and output before relying on it.
Set up YouTube Live and protect the stream key
- Create or schedule a live stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Use YouTube’s current encoder workflow and select the intended stream settings. Exact controls can change; follow YouTube’s instructions for creating a live stream with an encoder.
- Copy the current server URL and stream key. YouTube uses these values to connect an encoder. Treat the key as a credential: do not put it in a public script repository, screenshot, or message, and restrict access to the machine and configuration that use it.
- Choose a supported ingest protocol. Configure FFmpeg to match the protocol and current YouTube requirements. Do not assume an RTMP-oriented setup and an HLS setup use the same output format or options.
- Start with a private or otherwise appropriate test. Check the YouTube preview and confirm video, audio, orientation and continuity before relying on the stream for viewers.
FFmpeg is a command-line tool for reading media, filtering or transcoding it, and writing output formats; its options depend on the input and output being used. Consult the FFmpeg documentation and FFmpeg formats documentation for the relevant input, protocol and format options. Because the source, codecs and ingest protocol are unspecified here, a universal copy-and-paste command would risk being wrong.

Match the output to YouTube’s ingest requirements
RTMP or another encoder workflow
In YouTube’s encoder workflow, the encoder connects using the stream server URL and stream key, then sends content for the Live Control Room preview and stream controls. Use the current values YouTube provides for the specific stream rather than relying on an old key or endpoint.
HLS ingest
YouTube also documents HLS ingest. It has higher latency because video is delivered in segments. YouTube’s HLS help page specifies TS segments, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and supported codecs. Google’s developer guide adds constraints including muxed M2TS media, supported H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio and a closed GOP. Confirm the current requirements in YouTube’s HLS setup help and Google’s HLS ingestion developer guide before configuring an encoder.

Do not treat these protocol requirements as a ready-made FFmpeg command: the exact muxing, codec and segment options depend on your source and FFmpeg build.
Keep the stream available and recover when it stops
A 24/7 goal is an operational arrangement, not a guarantee that one FFmpeg process or one YouTube session will never end. The reviewed YouTube encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that archival rule does not establish that a single live session can run indefinitely. Plan for session endings and verify YouTube’s current rules.

- Keep the host available. FFmpeg only runs while its host and process are running. For a self-managed setup, account for power, operating-system restarts, network interruptions and the computer’s ability to encode or pass through the chosen media.
- Monitor both ends. Check that FFmpeg is still running and that YouTube Live Control Room is receiving a healthy preview. A process that remains open does not by itself prove that viewers are receiving usable audio and video.
- Plan for restart and session changes. Decide who or what will detect a stopped process, reconnect after a dropped ingest, and create or resume a YouTube session when needed. Test the recovery procedure instead of assuming a restart will always reconnect correctly.
- Recheck credentials and access. If a stream key is changed or access is lost, update the protected encoder configuration and verify the preview again.
These are operational recommendations, not a claim that a particular FFmpeg command, computer or monitoring arrangement has been tested for 24/7 service.
Troubleshoot common failures
- YouTube does not receive a signal: Confirm that FFmpeg is running, the current server URL and key are correct, and the selected output protocol matches YouTube’s stream configuration. Check FFmpeg’s error output and YouTube’s preview.
- Video arrives but audio is missing or wrong: Verify that the intended audio input is actually routed into FFmpeg’s output. For a live camera/mixer source, check the capture device and mixer routing; for a file, confirm that the file contains the expected audio stream.
- The picture or sound stops at the end of a sermon file: The input reached end-of-file or its loop behavior is not configured as intended. Check FFmpeg’s input looping and timestamp handling against the actual file and test through a complete loop.
- HLS output is rejected or delayed: Check YouTube’s current segment, playlist, transport and codec requirements. Higher latency is inherent to HLS delivery in YouTube’s explanation; it is not necessarily a sign that the encoder is stalled.
- The stream stops after running for a long time: Check the host, network, FFmpeg process and YouTube session state. YouTube’s under-12-hour archive behavior is not proof of an indefinitely open session, so use monitoring and a tested restart process.
