Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To avoid clipping, preserve the intended left and right stereo channels, lower the source and OBS levels until peaks stay safely below 0 dBFS, and place an OBS Limiter last in the audio filter chain. Then record and listen to a representative test, check YouTube’s preview, and monitor stream health while live.
1. Keep the binaural-beat audio in stereo
In OBS, use stereo audio and confirm that both the left and right meters respond while your program plays. Check that the source itself contains the left/right differences you intend to send. OBS normally uses stereo, but its mono-downmix option changes how channels are presented; leave mono downmix off in the streaming path when your program depends on separate left and right signals.
This is a signal-routing check, not a claim about binaural beats’ effects. The goal is to deliver the intended two-channel audio to the stream.
2. Set gain before adding a limiter
- Play the loudest portion of the actual program, not just a quiet intro.
- Check the source’s playback or output level, then the operating-system mixer and OBS fader. Reduce the level where needed rather than relying on the limiter to repair an already overloaded input.
- Watch OBS’s peak meter as the audio plays. Keep peaks below digital full scale: OBS warns that audio above 0 dBFS in the final stream or recording can produce clipping distortion.
OBS documents -9 dBFS as its “Permitted Maximum Level” meter reference. It allows margin for peak-meter discrepancies and alignment across equipment; treat it as a conservative reference, not a YouTube loudness target.

3. Put an OBS Limiter last in the filter chain
In OBS, open the audio source’s Filters, add Limiter, and place it after the other audio filters. OBS says a limiter prevents peaks above 0 dB that can cause clipping and distortion, and should be the last filter in the chain.
OBS documents a default limiter threshold of -6.00 dB and release of 60 ms. These are software defaults, not a universal mix prescription. Listen to the result and watch the meters rather than copying the values blindly. A limiter is a peak safety ceiling; it does not replace sensible source and fader levels.

If you prepare the audio file in advance
Audacity’s Limiter can hold source-file peaks below a chosen ceiling. Its manual documents a default output of -1 dB to leave headroom below full scale before lossy encoding. This can help with the source file, but it cannot replace checking the live OBS signal path and the encoded stream.
4. Set YouTube’s stereo audio encoding values
YouTube’s live encoder guidance for RTMP/RTMPS lists AAC or MP3 audio, a 44.1 kHz sample rate for stereo, and 128 kbps audio bitrate for stereo. These are audio settings; do not confuse them with YouTube’s separate video bitrate recommendations.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
Choose video settings appropriate to the visual and your available upload bandwidth, then test the total stream load. YouTube recommends leaving 20% room against available upload bandwidth.
5. Test the entire path before going live
- With the program playing, verify left and right activity in OBS and listen through headphones or a monitor output if available. Headphones are an optional monitoring aid, not a clipping fix.
- Open the YouTube Live Control Room preview and check that the audio arrives as intended.
- Record a representative session in OBS and listen to the recording before broadcasting. A local recording can reveal distortion that is easy to miss while watching meters.
- Use test audio and video movement similar to the actual broadcast. YouTube recommends this kind of preflight test, and advises monitoring stream health and messages.
6. Monitor the stream while it is live
Keep OBS’s peak indicators and YouTube’s stream health visible during the broadcast. OBS’s top meter indicator holds the loudest level for 20 seconds, which can help reveal a recent peak even after the signal falls. YouTube recommends continuously monitoring audio and video quality.

Troubleshooting clipping and missing stereo
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| Distortion is present in both the recording and stream | The source, operating-system output, or an earlier stage is already too loud. | Lower the source or output level first, then check the OBS fader and peak meter while the loudest audio plays. Keep final peaks below 0 dBFS. |
| OBS meters look safe, but YouTube’s preview sounds distorted | The problem may be later in the path, such as the encoded stream, or may not have been apparent in local monitoring. | Listen to the Live Control Room preview, review stream-health messages, and make a fresh representative recording. Check the full path rather than assuming the OBS meter alone proves the stream is clean. |
| Only one side of the stereo program is active or audible | The source may be routed incorrectly or may not contain the expected channel content. | Check the source’s left/right meters and channel assignment. Confirm that the intended stereo program is present and that mono downmix is not enabled in the streaming path. |
| Peaks still sound harsh with a limiter enabled | The signal could be too hot before the limiter, or the limiter may not be last in the chain. | Reduce level earlier in the path, confirm the limiter follows other filters, and listen to a test recording instead of treating the limiter as a loudness control. |
| Stream health reports problems during the test | The overall stream may be exceeding available upload capacity. | Check total outbound bandwidth, including video, and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% allowance. Retest under conditions similar to the live broadcast. |
