Copy mode preserves the existing encoded streams; it cannot change their codec settings or make incompatible files compatible.
What copy mode can—and cannot—do
FFmpeg’s -c copy (also written -codec copy) copies the compressed streams without decoding and re-encoding them. That avoids an encode step, but it also means FFmpeg does not adjust resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe spacing, or audio format. Check that your files already meet YouTube’s ingest guidance before streaming.
The concat demuxer is for sequencing compatible inputs, not for joining arbitrary video files. FFmpeg requires the files to have matching streams, codecs, and time bases. It adjusts timestamps to place each file after the preceding one; inaccurate duration metadata can cause gaps, overlaps, or other boundary artifacts. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation and FFmpeg input options.
Check the files against YouTube’s ingest guidance
YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance recommends RTMP/RTMPS ingest, constant bitrate (CBR), up to 60 fps, a keyframe interval of two seconds (no more than four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. Its H.264 bitrate recommendations vary by resolution and frame rate. These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that your internet connection can sustain the rate. Match the recommendation to the files you are sending and test your upload capacity. YouTube: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

For stereo audio, YouTube recommends a 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 kbps audio bitrate. These video and audio values are recommendations from YouTube’s current encoder settings page, accessed in 2026. Because copy mode cannot correct an existing mismatch, inspect the files first; otherwise, prepare compliant files by re-encoding before the live session.
Get the YouTube ingest URL and protect the stream key
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder stream.
- In the stream settings, copy the server URL and stream key. YouTube says the RTMPS URL is available through the lock icon. Prefer RTMPS if your FFmpeg build and network support it; RTMPS is RTMP carried over TLS/SSL. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance and YouTube’s streaming setup instructions.
- Treat the key like a password. Do not expose it in a public script, screenshot, shared shell history, or log. The exact URL and key are assigned in Live Control Room; do not assume an example URL will work for your stream.
Build a concat manifest for the playlist
Create a plain-text manifest with the first line exactly ffconcat version 1.0, then add one file directive per segment in playback order. For example:

Use paths that resolve from the directory where you run FFmpeg, or use explicit paths. Quote or escape names containing special characters according to FFmpeg’s manifest syntax. Check the stream count and layout, codecs, time bases, and duration metadata for every segment. A single assembled file avoids cross-file compatibility and duration issues, if you already have one.
Send the playlist with FFmpeg
Set the URL and key privately in your shell environment, then run the pattern below. Replace the environment-variable values with the exact values from Live Control Room. This is a command pattern, not a tested invocation; confirm that the RTMPS URL syntax matches YouTube’s supplied URL and that your FFmpeg build supports RTMPS.

ffmpeg -re -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.ffconcat -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? -c copy -f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL/$YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY"
-repaces a file input at its native frame rate; FFmpeg describes it as equivalent to a read rate of 1 and useful when packet flow speed matters, such as live streaming. Put it before the file input. Do not use low-rate pacing on a real-time capture input, which can cause packet loss. FFmpeg documentation.-f concatselects the concat demuxer, and-i playlist.ffconcatsupplies the manifest.-safe 0allows arbitrary file names and paths. The default safe mode is restrictive: it accepts safe relative paths with portable characters, but not protocol specifications or paths with a leading dot component. Use-safe 0only when the manifest and its local paths are trusted. FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.-map 0:v:0selects the first video stream.-map 0:a?selects audio if present; omit it if the playlist has no audio.-c copycopies streams rather than re-encoding. Do not add filters, scaling, frame-rate conversion,-c:v libx264, or audio re-encoding if you need strict copy mode.-f flvselects the output muxer used by this command pattern. Verify it against the current ingest URL and installed FFmpeg build.
Test the preview and start the event
Before relying on a stream, test representative motion and audio, then monitor the preview and stream-health messages in Live Control Room. YouTube recommends testing and watching the live stream. For a scheduled event, wait for the preview and select Go live when the control room is ready. Stop the encoder when finished and end the event in Live Control Room as appropriate. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume the same archive behavior for a longer stream. Encoder settings and testing · Streaming setup and control room.
Troubleshoot common failures
- The manifest will not open: confirm its first line is exactly
ffconcat version 1.0, check path spelling and quoting, and verify that safe mode permits the paths you used. If necessary, use-safe 0only for a trusted local manifest. - Playback stops at a segment or has artifacts at boundaries: compare every segment’s stream layout, codecs, and time bases, then check its duration metadata. The concat demuxer depends on the previous file’s duration to adjust timestamps.
- The playlist runs too quickly or timing is wrong: put
-rebefore the manifest input so FFmpeg reads the file at its native frame rate. - YouTube reports quality or ingest problems: compare the source’s resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, bitrate mode, and audio codec with YouTube’s recommendations. Copy mode cannot fix those properties; prepare a compliant source instead.
- RTMPS connection or certificate error: re-copy the exact RTMPS URL, check that FFmpeg supports RTMPS, and investigate whether your client or network requires port 443. YouTube’s RTMPS troubleshooting guidance covers protocol, URL, port, and client support checks.
- No preview appears: check that FFmpeg is sending to the right server URL with the current key, then review Live Control Room status. For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview before selecting Go live.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want an always-on YouTube stream without keeping a computer or home connection running, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos; it does not go live from a camera.
