To avoid a black screen or freeze between playlist videos, make FFmpeg send YouTube one continuous output with compatible streams and timestamps. If the files match in codec, stream layout, time base, resolution, frame rate and audio properties, the concat demuxer can join them without re-encoding. If they differ, normalize them first or use the concat filter and re-encode. No FFmpeg flag can guarantee gapless playback for every playlist, network and viewer, so test transitions before relying on the stream.
Choose the right way to join the files
The two FFmpeg concat methods solve different problems. The demuxer is the simpler, lower-re-encode route when source files already conform; it does not convert incompatible files. The concat filter can combine inputs that need conversion, but requires decoding and encoding the output.

FFmpeg’s FAQ describes the demuxer as the option that can avoid re-encoding when the format permits it, and the filter as the route when re-encoding is needed. A September 22, 2024 FFmpeg-user reply by Oliver Fromme quotes the documentation requirement that inputs must have the same streams, including codecs and time base, and cautions that the demuxer does not work as a general-purpose playlist normalizer. The thread describes transitions involving files with different formats, sizes and aspect ratios.
Inspect and prepare the playlist
1. Inventory every file
Use ffprobe or an equivalent inspector to compare the video and audio streams in every item. Check codecs, dimensions, frame rate, pixel format, time base, sample rate, channel layout, durations and timestamps. Decide which video and audio streams you intend to include; multiple or unexpected streams can complicate mapping and concatenation.

2. Make a concat-demuxer list if the files match
Create a text file such as playlist.txt, with one entry per file in playback order:
file 'video-1.mp4'
file 'video-2.mp4'
file 'video-3.mp4'For paths that require unsafe characters or locations, the common input shape is -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt. Check the security implications of accepting paths from untrusted sources, and confirm syntax against the FFmpeg version installed. If the files do not have compatible streams, do not assume this list makes them compatible.

3. Normalize files that differ
Either transcode staging copies of all items to one shared profile and then use the demuxer, or decode, filter and encode them together with the concat filter. Standardize resolution, frame rate, pixel format, video codec, audio sample rate, channel layout and audio codec. Choose an output profile that preserves the quality you need and that your machine can sustain. Matching those properties is necessary for a reliable concat workflow, but it is not a universal repair for irregular timestamps, mismatched stream durations or content-specific issues.
Set up a continuous YouTube output
Use real-time pacing and looping deliberately
For file input intended to act as a live feed, FFmpeg’s -re option can pace input in real time. -stream_loop -1 can be used when you want to repeat the input indefinitely. Option behavior and placement can depend on the installed FFmpeg version; verify them in the FFmpeg documentation. Neither option fixes incompatible media or guarantees a seamless transition.

Match YouTube’s encoder guidance
YouTube’s current English-language encoder guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264/H.265/AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Select bitrate for the codec, resolution and frame rate you actually use; the page’s recommendations are mode-specific. For example, it lists 14 Mbps for H.264 1080p at 30 fps and 8 Mbps for H.264 720p at 30 fps. These are YouTube recommendations, not universal requirements. Confirm the latest table and supported modes on YouTube’s encoder settings page.
Get the correct ingest URL and protect the key
In YouTube Live Control Room, retrieve the stream URL and stream key for the live event you intend to use. YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension to RTMP, and provides its RTMPS URL in Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password: do not expose it in public scripts, screenshots or logs. Command shape for compatible files
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt ...encoder and output options... -f flv "<YouTube ingest URL>/<stream key>"This is a schematic, not a verified drop-in command. The encoder, audio mapping, rate control, container, protocol URL and flags must match your files, FFmpeg build and YouTube event. Use the concat filter or normalize the inputs if they do not match. -c copy copies streams; it does not transcode them into compatibility. Check the local FFmpeg documentation and test the beginning, every transition and the loop boundary.
Test the transitions before going public
- Create a private or unlisted test event and send the playlist using the intended command and settings.
- Watch the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages. Check that picture and audio continue as one file ends and the next begins.
- Include motion and audio in the test, and pay particular attention to the playlist loop boundary if looping is enabled.
- Monitor CPU or GPU load if encoding, as well as upload stability. YouTube recommends testing before an event, maintaining 20% upload headroom and monitoring the stream. See its streaming tips.
- Make adjustments, then repeat the test. Viewer playback also depends on downstream buffering and player behavior; a clean output on the encoder side cannot guarantee every viewer sees a zero-gap transition.
Why a playlist can freeze or go black
- Incompatible streams: codec, stream layout, time base or other properties differ. Normalize the items or use the concat filter and re-encode.
- Timestamp or duration problems: files may have irregular timestamps, unexpected stream lengths, or audio and video that end at different times. Inspect the affected files and test that transition; there is no universal flag established here that repairs every case.
- Encoder overload: re-encoding mixed files can be demanding. Reduce the target resolution or frame rate if necessary, and check encoder load during a test. Hardware performance varies; no benchmark establishes a universal capacity.
- Insufficient or unstable upload: the total stream bitrate must fit the available connection. YouTube recommends 20% upload headroom and warns that network disruptions can break a stream. A wired Ethernet connection may help connection reliability, but cannot repair format or timestamp mismatches.
- Ingest settings do not match: verify the event’s stream URL and key, protocol, codec, keyframe interval, audio format and bitrate against YouTube’s current guidance.
- Different viewer playback: downstream buffering and player behavior affect what viewers see, so test with realistic conditions rather than assuming an encoder-side transition proves gapless playback for everyone.
