Use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer to play a text-file playlist in order, and -stream_loop -1 on a separate background-video input to repeat that video indefinitely. Then choose how the two video streams should be combined, map the audio you want, encode to YouTube-compatible settings, and send the output to the RTMPS ingestion address and stream key shown for your YouTube broadcast. The command below is a starting point for compatible local files, not a universal recipe: playlist formats, stream layouts, FFmpeg builds, and channel settings vary.
What this setup does—and what “playlist” means
This method treats a playlist as a plain-text file of local media filenames read by FFmpeg’s concat demuxer. FFmpeg processes those files consecutively; a separate input option loops the background video. They are different operations. The example overlays a looping background beneath the playlist video, while taking audio from the playlist.
If by playlist you mean a YouTube or other online playlist, a directory of files, or a custom feed, you must first build an input FFmpeg can read. Those are not interchangeable with a concat-demuxer text file. FFmpeg documents the demuxer and its requirements in its concat documentation.
Prepare the playlist and background file
Create a concat list
Make a text file named playlist.txt, with one file directive per media file. Use paths relative to the text file where possible, or use absolute paths. For example:

file 'clip-01.mp4'
file 'clip-02.mp4'
file 'clip-03.mp4'
For filenames containing apostrophes or unusual characters, follow FFmpeg’s concat syntax and test that the paths parse correctly. Check that every listed file exists and can be read by the account running FFmpeg.
Check compatibility before concatenating
The concat demuxer works best when the files have the same streams, codecs, and time bases. Differences can cause timestamp gaps, artifacts, or transitions that do not behave as expected. Confirm that each playlist item has the intended video and audio streams; if formats differ, normalize the files to consistent stream characteristics before relying on a long live run. Incorrect or estimated durations can also affect timestamps.

Decide what the background is for
The command below assumes the background is a video file. If it is a still image, use an image-input method with an appropriate duration or image-loop option for your FFmpeg build; -stream_loop is not the only way to keep a visual input available. If the background has audio, this example ignores it. Choose your audio source deliberately rather than letting input order decide by accident.
Build an overlay stream with FFmpeg
Replace the example paths and RTMPS URL with your own. In this command, input 0 is the playlist and input 1 is the looping background. The background is scaled to 1280×720 and placed first; the playlist video is scaled to fit within that canvas and overlaid in the center. The playlist audio is mapped to the output.

This is documentation-based syntax guidance, not a tested command. Validate it against your FFmpeg version, actual media, desired resolution and frame rate, and the ingestion details supplied for your stream. The example’s 1280×720 canvas and bitrate are illustrative only; they are not a universal YouTube recommendation. Check YouTube’s current resolution-and-frame-rate table before selecting a bitrate.
Understand the important options
-f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txtreads the text playlist as input 0.-safe 0permits paths outside the concat demuxer’s restricted safe subset; use it only for a playlist you control.-rereads each input at its native rate rather than as fast as possible, which is appropriate when feeding a live output from media files.-stream_loop -1is placed immediately before the background input’s-i. FFmpeg defines-1as infinite looping. Input order determines filter labels: here[0:v]is playlist video and[1:v]is background video.- The filter scales and crops the background to fill the canvas, scales the playlist video to fit, then overlays it centered. If you want the background visible around the foreground, the foreground’s aspect ratio and size determine how much background remains exposed.
-map "[v]"explicitly selects the filtered video.-map 0:a:0?selects the first audio stream from the playlist when present; the trailing?makes that mapping optional. If you want silence, background audio, or a separate audio input instead, change the mapping and filter/encoding choices to match.-c:v libx264encodes H.264, while-c:a aacencodes AAC audio. The bitrate values shown are examples, not a setting to copy blindly. YouTube’s encoder guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS, supported codecs, constant-bitrate encoding, and frame rates up to 60 fps.-g 60 -keyint_min 60assumes 30 fps for a two-second keyframe interval. If you change frame rate, adjust the GOP/keyframe interval to two seconds; YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.- The final URL must use the current RTMPS ingestion endpoint and stream name/key for your broadcast. Do not share or publish a real stream key.
Change the composition or audio intentionally
If you only want sequential playlist playback with no background, remove the second input and overlay filter and map the playlist video and desired audio explicitly. If you want the playlist as a small picture over a full-screen background, change the foreground scaling dimensions rather than merely changing overlay coordinates. For a separate music file, add it as another input and map or mix that audio deliberately; do not accidentally send both playlist and background audio. FFmpeg’s documentation explains stream selection and complex filtergraphs, including multi-input overlays.

Set YouTube ingestion and encoder parameters
In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the intended broadcast and use the ingestion address and stream name/key provided for it. YouTube’s API describes live-stream resources with ingestion details and stream-health fields; do not substitute a key from another stream or expose the key in a public command, screenshot, or log.
Google recommends RTMPS for secure streaming. Its RTMPS guide describes the rtmps protocol and port 443; use the current endpoint and stream name supplied for your stream rather than assuming a fixed URL structure. For workflows that need segment-based delivery, YouTube also documents HLS ingestion; its protocol comparison says HLS generally has higher latency than RTMP-based ingestion. See the YouTube ingestion protocol comparison.

YouTube’s live encoder settings page recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. It lists constant bitrate encoding, frame rates up to 60 fps, and H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 among supported video choices for the documented RTMP/RTMPS settings; it lists AAC or MP3 audio. These are YouTube’s published recommendations, not results from a test of this command. Choose the resolution and frame rate first, then consult YouTube’s current bitrate row for that combination instead of treating the sample bitrate above as authoritative. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Run a preflight before the intended broadcast
- Validate inputs: confirm the concat list is readable, each path resolves, and every file has compatible streams and timing. Check the background file independently.
- Confirm the output design: verify input labels, overlay size and placement, chosen audio source, and explicit output maps. If audio is optional in the playlist, confirm the output still behaves as intended when a file lacks audio.
- Match settings to the target: select resolution and frame rate, check YouTube’s corresponding bitrate guidance, set a two-second keyframe interval, and ensure the machine can encode while maintaining the required upload bandwidth.
- Protect the key: insert the current stream name/key only in a secure local environment. Avoid posting it in public logs or support requests.
- Test representative content: run a test with typical motion and audio before the planned broadcast. YouTube Help says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Monitor stream health: inspect YouTube’s live status/health indicators while the test is running, and correct warnings before relying on the setup for a longer session.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg cannot open a playlist item | A path is wrong, relative to a different directory, or not escaped correctly in the concat file. | Check each path and the playlist’s location; test the concat input by itself before adding filters or streaming. |
| Playback breaks or shows timestamp glitches at a transition | Playlist files have mismatched streams, codecs, time bases, or inaccurate durations. | Inspect the files, normalize them to compatible characteristics, and verify durations and timestamps before concatenating again. |
| No background appears, or the overlay filter reports an input error | The input order or filter labels do not match the command, or the background input is unavailable. | Remember that input 0 is the playlist and input 1 is the background in the example. Confirm the background’s video stream and revise labels if you reorder inputs. |
| Output has no audio or the wrong audio | The selected playlist item lacks audio, the optional map yields no stream, or the desired source was not mapped. | Check each file’s audio streams and choose playlist, background, separate audio, or silence explicitly. Map or mix only the source you intend. |
| YouTube does not receive the stream | The endpoint, protocol, stream name/key, or broadcast setup is wrong; network access may also be blocked. | Copy the current ingestion details from the relevant YouTube setup, use RTMPS as configured, verify secure access to the endpoint, and keep the key private. |
| Stream health warns about quality or drops | Encoding settings may not match the selected resolution/frame rate, or upload capacity and encoder performance may be insufficient. | Use YouTube’s current settings table for the exact output, check available upload bandwidth and CPU/GPU load, then retest with representative movement and audio. |
