To stream an AIR radio program feed to YouTube Live, first confirm that your channel is cleared to livestream and that the station has permission to retransmit the program on YouTube, including any replay. Then route the authorized audio feed into a software or hardware encoder, pair it with a station-approved visual, and send it to YouTube using the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. “AIR” is not identified here, so the correct audio connection depends on the output your station actually provides.

Clear the rights and channel checks before the program

Confirm permission for YouTube transmission

A station’s permission to broadcast a program over radio does not by itself establish permission to retransmit every part of it on YouTube or retain a recording there. Ask the station’s rights contact to confirm clearance for YouTube, the relevant territories, all program elements, and any archived replay. This matters for music, recordings, guest material, and other third-party content.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches. A match can cause a placeholder to appear, interrupt the stream, or terminate it. YouTube says a rights owner may need to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist when the stream contains licensed third-party content. See YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.

The U.S. Copyright Office discusses statutory provisions for certain sound-recording transmissions, but that does not determine whether a particular station’s program is cleared for a YouTube simulcast. Do not assume a rule in one jurisdiction applies elsewhere or covers every part of a program; get advice specific to the content, rights, and location when the answer is unclear. See the U.S. Copyright Office licensing information.

Check livestream activation in advance

Verify that the channel can livestream before show day. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave the check until shortly before the broadcast. Its encoder setup guidance is available in YouTube Help.

Find out how the radio audio reaches the encoder

The essential signal path is: station feed → software or hardware encoder → YouTube Live. First ask the station engineer how the program is exposed. It may be a direct network audio source, audio playing on the encoder computer, or a physical line-level output from the studio. The title alone does not establish which applies, so do not buy or connect a particular cable, interface, or capture device until you have checked the source output and the encoder computer’s inputs.

  • Computer playback: Confirm which application produces the program audio and configure the encoder to capture that application or device, avoiding unrelated desktop or microphone audio.
  • Physical studio output: Match the studio output to an input the encoder computer or hardware encoder supports. If they do not match, ask the station engineer to specify the appropriate interface or capture path.

Choose an encoder and audio format

Software encoder

OBS is one software option. The OBS project describes it as open-source software with no charge, watermark, or commercial-use restriction. Those facts do not remove the need to connect the station feed reliably to the computer. See the OBS project site.

Dedicated hardware encoder

YouTube lists the AJA HELO Plus among its hardware encoder options. Dedicated hardware is an option for a team that wants an appliance-based workflow, not a prerequisite for a basic radio simulcast. Check current availability and compatibility before purchasing. YouTube’s list and encoder guidance are in YouTube Help.

Start with mono or stereo

For a conventional radio program, mono or stereo is the practical starting point. YouTube supports mono, stereo, and 5.1-channel ingestion; other channel configurations may convert unreliably to stereo. A 5.1 path only makes sense when the source and encoder support it and the team has configured the relevant protocol settings. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

The available guidance does not establish a bitrate or resolution that is optimal for this particular feed. Use settings appropriate to the encoder, available connection, and chosen visual format rather than treating a generic number as a tested recommendation for the station.

Create the YouTube broadcast and connect the encoder

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create a stream or schedule one for the program. YouTube distinguishes the watchable broadcast event from the stream settings and transmission path; they are related, but not the same resource. See YouTube’s Live Streaming API overview.
  2. Prepare the visual. An encoder sends audio-video content, so use a station-approved still, show artwork, or another permitted visual with the radio audio. Confirm that the station has permission to use that image on the live stream and any archive.
  3. Get the connection details from YouTube Studio. Use YouTube’s direct integration in the encoder if available. Otherwise, copy the server URL and stream key shown in Studio into the encoder’s streaming settings. YouTube’s encoder instructions explain this connection step: YouTube Help.
  4. Protect the stream key. Treat it as a credential: do not publish it, put it in public-facing notes, or share it beyond people who need to configure the encoder.
  5. Start the encoder and inspect the preview. Check that the expected program audio is present, that it is not doubled with desktop or microphone audio, and that the visual is correct. For a scheduled stream, YouTube says to wait for the preview and then click Go live.
  6. Monitor the live program. Have someone check the YouTube preview or live player and listen for the program audio, especially at the start and after any change to the source or encoder.

End the stream and decide whether to keep an archive

End the broadcast deliberately in the encoder and YouTube Studio, then check that the live session has closed as intended. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. The archive is another use of the program, so confirm that the rights clearance covers keeping that replay available; otherwise, decide in advance how the station will handle it. See YouTube’s live-stream guidance.

Troubleshoot the common failure points

Symptom Likely cause What to check
Livestreaming is unavailable The channel has not completed first-time activation. Enable livestreaming ahead of the program; YouTube says initial activation can take up to 24 hours.
YouTube receives no audio The encoder is listening to the wrong device, application, or input. Trace the path from the station feed to the encoder input and verify the selected audio source.
Audio is doubled or contains unwanted sound More than one source, such as desktop audio and a microphone, is being captured. Inspect the encoder’s active audio sources and disable any that are not part of the program.
The encoder connects but the broadcast is not live The event may be scheduled and awaiting the preview/Go live step, or the stream key or server URL may be wrong. Compare the encoder connection details with YouTube Studio and, for a scheduled stream, wait for preview before selecting Go live.
The visual is missing or incorrect The encoder scene or selected source is not the station-approved image intended for broadcast. Check the active scene and preview before going live.
The stream is interrupted after a rights match YouTube has detected third-party content, or the rights owner has not allowlisted the channel for licensed content. Contact the station’s rights representative and relevant rights holder; do not assume a terrestrial broadcast permission resolves a YouTube match.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep a pre-recorded program playing on YouTube around the clock, StreamNeo is a different workflow from sending a live AIR feed through OBS: it plays uploaded videos, not a live studio or camera source. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded material in the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. It supports whatever quality you upload up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and offers the first day free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
