The practical approach is to download the authorized S3 objects, arrange compatible files in an FFmpeg concat manifest, then send FFmpeg’s output to the current YouTube Live ingest address over RTMPS. S3 stores the media; it does not by itself turn a bucket into a live playlist. You will need an authorized way to retrieve the files, a host that can keep FFmpeg running, and the current server address and stream key from YouTube Studio. The steps below show a staged workflow you can test before making a broadcast public.

What you need before you start

  • An S3 bucket or prefix containing the video files, plus permission to retrieve them.
  • A machine or cloud compute environment with AWS CLI and FFmpeg available, enough storage for the files, and a stable outbound network connection.
  • A YouTube channel able to create a live stream, and its current ingestion details from Live Control Room.
  • A playlist order decided in advance. S3 object listing order is not a reliable substitute for an intentional sequence.

This workflow stages files locally before broadcasting. AWS documents object retrieval through its console, CLI, SDKs, and REST API; its documentation does not establish a universal FFmpeg input that enumerates a private S3 bucket as a continuously refreshed live playlist. AWS also notes that GET requests and external data transfer may incur charges. Avoid putting long-lived AWS credentials in a script or URL.

Retrieve the media from S3

Download the objects you intend to play

For an AWS CLI workflow, configure the CLI with an authorized access method, then sync the desired prefix into a local working directory. Replace the bucket and prefix with your own values:

mkdir -p playlist-media
aws s3 sync s3://YOUR_BUCKET/YOUR_PREFIX/ ./playlist-media/

Use an IAM role or another appropriately scoped credential method where possible; do not paste secret access keys into the command or a file that may be shared. If another AWS account owns the objects, the owner may need to grant access or provide a presigned URL. Check that the sync completed and that the files you expect are present before starting FFmpeg.

Choose local staging or remote reads

Local staging is easier to audit: you can inspect the exact files, make a fixed manifest, and avoid having the live encoder fetch each clip as it plays. Reading remote objects directly can avoid storing a full local copy, but requires working authenticated access for every read and introduces more points where access or network failures can interrupt playback. The AWS and FFmpeg documentation describe their respective components, not a validated, universal private-S3-to-live command.

Prepare an ordered playlist FFmpeg can concatenate

Create the manifest in playback order

FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads a plain-text script, with one file entry per item. Create playlist.txt in the directory containing the downloaded files, listing paths relative to that directory:

file 'clip-01.mp4'
file 'clip-02.mp4'
file 'clip-03.mp4'

Use the names and sequence you actually want. Keep filenames simple; if a filename contains a single quote, newline, or unusual path characters, account for FFmpeg concat-file escaping rather than copying this basic example unchanged.

Seagate Portable 5TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0 for PC, Mac, PS4, & Xbox - 1-Year Rescue Service (STGX5000400), Black

Check compatibility and duration

The concat demuxer expects the files to have the same streams, codecs, and time base. It processes entries sequentially and calculates later timestamps from earlier file durations. Inaccurate or missing duration information can cause artifacts at boundaries; the manifest format supports duration directives when a known duration needs to override the file’s reported value.

Inspect the files before streaming. If they differ in stream layout or codec parameters, do not assume stream-copy will repair them. Normalize or re-encode the files to a common format before concatenation, and ensure each listed item has compatible video and audio streams. If an item has no audio while the others do, for example, the stream layout is not the same. A production playlist should be tested at clip transitions, not just at the first frame.

Set up the YouTube Live destination

  1. Open YouTube Studio and enter Live Control Room.
  2. Create or select the intended broadcast and its associated stream.
  3. Copy the current server or ingestion URL and stream key shown for that stream. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it, commit it to source control, or include it in a screenshot.
  4. Use the encoder destination format YouTube provides. If your FFmpeg output field accepts a combined destination, combine the server URL and stream key as directed by YouTube; if it has separate fields, keep them separate.

YouTube’s API model represents the incoming feed as a liveStream and the audience-facing event as a liveBroadcast; API-based workflows create and bind those resources. The ingestion information can expose primary and backup addresses plus a stream name. That distinction matters if an encoder asks for a full output URL rather than separate server and key fields. For a manual setup, use the current values displayed for the selected stream instead of relying on an old saved URL or key.

Send the playlist to YouTube with FFmpeg

Use RTMPS for the ordinary encoder path

YouTube recommends RTMPS for ordinary encoder use; it encrypts the transport. Configure a complete RTMPS destination using the current server URL and key from Live Control Room. In the shell example below, set YOUTUBE_RTMPS_TARGET to the complete destination in the format required by your YouTube stream and FFmpeg setup. Keep it private because it contains the stream key.

export YOUTUBE_RTMPS_TARGET='YOUR_CURRENT_RTMPS_DESTINATION'

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -i playlist.txt
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 14M -r 30
  -c:a aac -f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMPS_TARGET"

This is an illustrative command, not a tested universal S3 integration. It assumes the concat inputs meet the demuxer’s compatibility requirements, the FFmpeg build includes the selected encoders, and the destination string matches the current YouTube ingest details. -re reads the input at its normal playback rate; -stream_loop -1 asks FFmpeg to repeat the concat input indefinitely. The example encodes video as H.264 and audio as AAC rather than copying the source streams unchanged.

The example’s 14M video bitrate is YouTube Help’s recommended bitrate for 1080p at 30 fps with H.264, on the current page accessed in 2026; it is a recommendation for those settings, not a performance guarantee. For 720p at 30 fps with H.264, the same YouTube Help guidance recommends 8 Mbps. Choose output resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate together to suit your source and sustained upload capacity. YouTube publishes different guidance for different settings, so these two figures should not be treated as universal targets.

Keyframe interval is another encoder setting to check against YouTube’s current guidance for the chosen format. The command above does not explicitly set a keyframe interval; configure the appropriate interval for your selected output rather than assuming FFmpeg’s defaults match every YouTube recommendation. Audio-bearing media is assumed here; if the playlist has no audio streams, adjust the output configuration deliberately rather than relying on this example unchanged.

When stream-copy is appropriate

If every file already has compatible streams and codecs acceptable to YouTube, and you do not need to change encoding, stream-copy can avoid another lossy encode. In that case, replace the encoding options with -c copy, but only after validating the files and the resulting output. Stream-copy does not reconcile mismatched codecs, stream layouts, time bases, or problematic duration metadata; normalize incompatible material first.

Test before making the broadcast public

  1. Start with a private or unlisted test broadcast where available, and use representative video motion and audio rather than a short static sample.
  2. Start FFmpeg and wait for YouTube’s stream preview and health information to appear.
  3. Check that both picture and sound are present, that transitions between clips are clean, and that the playlist repeats as expected.
  4. Review stream-health warnings and adjust the encoder settings using YouTube’s current guidance for the chosen resolution and frame rate.
  5. Verify the audience-facing watch page as well as the encoder preview before the intended public launch.

YouTube Help puts the test plainly: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” For scheduled streams, its help guidance describes waiting for the preview before clicking Go live. The reviewed help page says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after the encoder stops; platform behavior can change, so confirm the current YouTube behavior if archiving is part of your plan.

Common failures and fixes

Symptom Likely cause What to check
YouTube receives no feed The broadcast or stream is not configured, or the destination/key is incorrect or stale. Confirm the selected stream in Live Control Room, then copy its current ingestion URL and key again. Check whether FFmpeg expects one combined destination or separate fields.
Artifacts, gaps, or audio/video changes at a clip boundary Concat inputs have different streams, codecs, time bases, or unreliable duration data. Inspect each input’s stream layout and duration; normalize incompatible files and test the transitions. Use manifest duration overrides only when you know the correct duration.
Quality or stream-health warnings Encoding settings may not suit the selected resolution, frame rate, codec, or available sustained upload bandwidth. Use YouTube’s stream-health feedback and its current encoder recommendations for those exact settings; do not treat the sample bitrate as universal.
FFmpeg cannot retrieve a file or the playlist stops before a clip The media was not fully staged, a path in the manifest is wrong, or an attempted remote read lacks valid authorization. Check that every listed file exists and is readable from the working directory. For S3 retrieval, confirm access permissions and rerun the download before restarting the test.
The stream ends when the laptop or host shuts down FFmpeg is running on that machine, so it cannot continue after the host or its network goes offline. Keep the encoder host and network available for the whole broadcast, or use a suitable always-on compute environment and account for its cost, access controls, and monitoring.

Keep FFmpeg running—or move the loop to the cloud

The do-it-yourself workflow depends on the machine running FFmpeg, its access to the media, and a working outbound connection for the duration. A cloud virtual machine can provide an always-on host, but it still requires you to operate the environment and monitor the encoder. This workflow does not establish a measured performance or cost comparison between local and cloud hosting.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; StreamNeo loops the video from its cloud, so a computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It offers one flat price per slot for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. Every slot includes 10 GB of storage, pooled across active slots, plus looping, playlists, and StreamNeo team support. The first day is free with no card, once per account; billing options include a day, a week, a month, 6 months, or a year, and you can cancel any time. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide. For five or more slots, contact support.

The monthly option is $9.99 per month. To try the cloud workflow, start a StreamNeo account.
