To run a prerecorded video as a YouTube Live loop from a Windows laptop, use OBS Studio: add the video as a looping Media Source, connect OBS to the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio, and choose settings your BSNL connection can sustain. Measure upload speed on the connection you will use, leave headroom, and test the full stream in YouTube’s Live Control Room before relying on it. BSNL upload performance varies by plan, location, and network conditions, so no single bitrate is right for every BSNL connection.

Before you start: check YouTube access and your connection

Confirm the channel can go live

Your YouTube channel must be verified and not have a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. If this is the first time enabling live streaming, YouTube says activation can take up to 24 hours. Enable it well before your planned broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and setup guidance.

Measure BSNL upload, not just download

A live stream sends data out from your laptop. YouTube cautions that download speed is often greater than upload speed, so a fast download result alone does not establish that the connection can stream reliably. Measure upload on the laptop and BSNL connection you plan to use, at a time representative of the broadcast. Results can vary by plan, location, Wi-Fi conditions, household traffic, and ISP congestion; the YouTube recommendations below are not guarantees about any BSNL plan.

Leave capacity unused for fluctuations and other network use. YouTube recommends about 20% upload headroom for the primary stream, backup stream if used, and other traffic. OBS’s general troubleshooting guidance suggests beginning at 75% of total upload. Those are different rules of thumb, not a precise formula for every line. Use a conservative bitrate and validate it with a sustained test.

Create the YouTube stream and protect its key

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or manage a stream using YouTube’s encoder workflow.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the stream. OBS uses these details to send its video feed to YouTube. The exact controls can vary with YouTube Studio’s current layout; follow its encoder setup guidance at Set up your encoder for live streaming.
  3. Keep the key private. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to that stream. Do not publish it, place it in screenshots, or share it as ordinary text. If you believe it has been exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.

Make a looping scene in OBS Studio for Windows

  1. Create a scene. In OBS, use the Scenes panel to add a scene for this broadcast.
  2. Add the video. In Sources, select the add button, choose Media Source, name it, then browse to and select the video file on the laptop.
  3. Enable Loop. In the Media Source properties, turn on Loop, then apply the change. OBS defines this setting as replaying the file after playback completes. OBS lists MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM among supported video formats; support for a container does not ensure every codec inside a file will play correctly.
  4. Check the picture and sound. Start playback in the OBS preview. Confirm the framing is correct, the file’s audio is present at a sensible level, and playback restarts as intended when it reaches the end. Check the file itself if the sound is missing or the loop has an unwanted gap or abrupt transition.

For one repeating video, Media Source with Loop is the simplest setup. To rotate through multiple files, OBS also documents a VLC Video source with a looping playlist; VLC must be installed on the computer for that source.

Choose OBS stream settings that fit the BSNL line

Use YouTube’s recommended RTMPS path where available. For a typical SDR stream, YouTube’s general encoder guidance supports H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval. Match the output resolution and frame rate to the source and laptop, then set bitrate conservatively based on measured, sustained upload. Avoid selecting a higher output quality than the video or laptop can use effectively.

1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

These are YouTube encoder recommendations, not promised requirements for every viewing situation and not measurements of BSNL service. YouTube also recommends keeping about 20% headroom. If the available stable upload cannot accommodate a recommended setting with headroom, lower the bitrate, resolution, or frame rate and test. An uninterrupted lower-quality loop is generally more useful than a higher-quality stream that repeatedly drops frames.

In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube or YouTube RTMPS if offered, then enter or connect the stream details from YouTube Studio. Under Settings > Output, use Advanced output mode if needed to set the encoder, rate control to CBR, bitrate, and keyframe interval. Under Settings > Video, set the output resolution and frame rate. OBS labels may differ slightly by version and encoder. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings for current platform recommendations.

RTMPS is the ordinary recommended route for this workflow. HLS is a separate ingestion method with its own encoder requirements and higher latency; it is not needed just to loop a prerecorded video.

Test the complete broadcast before depending on it

  1. Start a test stream from OBS on the same laptop, router, and BSNL connection intended for the real broadcast.
  2. Open the stream’s Live Control Room preview and confirm that YouTube receives the expected picture and audio.
  3. Include representative movement and sound in the test. A static preview or an upload-speed snapshot does not show whether the connection will remain stable during a long stream.
  4. Watch YouTube’s stream-health messages and OBS’s connection indicator. Run the test long enough to expose variation under realistic household use, rather than treating an idle speed test as proof of sustained performance.
  5. End the test and adjust settings before the planned broadcast if the preview, sound, or stream health is poor.

YouTube’s guidance recommends testing with similar audio and motion and checking stream health. See YouTube’s streaming tips and encoder settings guidance.

BSNL-specific connection choices

  • Try Ethernet if Wi-Fi is fluctuating. A wired connection can remove Wi-Fi as one source of local variation, if both laptop and router have compatible ports. It does not raise the upload capacity of the BSNL plan or solve ISP congestion or outages. If the laptop needs an adapter, check compatibility before buying.
  • Reduce competing traffic. Other uploads or household traffic use the same available capacity. Re-test after changing network use, and keep the selected bitrate within stable upload headroom.
  • Do not infer capacity from a plan name. The available evidence does not establish a universal BSNL upload rate or route stability for every plan and location. Measure the actual connection and validate the OBS-to-YouTube path.

Troubleshoot a loop that will not stay live

Symptom Likely cause What to do
OBS shows dropped frames or a yellow/red connection indicator Upload is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate; other household traffic may also be using upload. Lower OBS video bitrate and test again. Reduce resolution or frame rate if needed, check competing traffic, and repeat a sustained test. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guidance explains that bitrate must fit stable upload and the streaming service’s limits: OBS stream connection troubleshooting.
YouTube preview is blank or does not receive the stream OBS may be using the wrong stream destination or key, or the channel’s live feature may not be active. Confirm the channel is eligible and activated, then compare OBS’s selected service, stream URL, and key with the current stream in YouTube Studio. Reset an exposed or suspect key and update OBS.
Video appears but there is no sound The source file may lack an audio track, or OBS may not be sending the source audio as expected. Play the source file locally, check OBS audio meters during playback, and verify the source and output audio settings before testing again.
The file plays once and stops Loop may not be enabled on the Media Source. Open the source properties, enable Loop, apply the change, and verify the restart in preview.
Video freezes, stutters, or the laptop struggles The laptop may be overloaded, the source file or output settings may be demanding, or the connection may be unstable. Check OBS stream health and system load. Test a lower output resolution or frame rate and a lower bitrate; change one setting at a time and verify the result in YouTube’s preview.
Stream stops when the laptop sleeps or OBS closes The local encoder is no longer sending video. For an OBS-based broadcast, keep the laptop awake, OBS running, and the connection available for the duration. If that is impractical, consider a cloud workflow instead.

Copyright and YouTube channel considerations

A video looping through OBS is still a YouTube live stream. Use material you own or have permission to broadcast, including music and other embedded content; a video being prerecorded does not remove copyright concerns. YouTube’s live access rules, copyright enforcement, and channel monetization decisions are separate matters. A loop that is technically stable does not guarantee eligibility for monetization, and repetitive or reused material may raise policy issues. Review YouTube’s current policies for your content before broadcasting; the free copyright safety checklist can help you review rights questions.
