To send a YouTube gaming stream at 1080p with FFmpeg, output 1920×1080 H.264 video, use constant bitrate (CBR), set keyframes every two seconds, and choose a frame rate your source and computer can sustain. YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for 1080p30 H.264 or 17 Mbps for 1080p60 H.264. Use RTMPS when supported, then test the preview and stream health in YouTube Live Control Room before broadcasting.

Choose 1080p30 or 1080p60

Both settings send 1920×1080 video. The practical choice is the frame rate: 60 fps can represent smoother motion, but your gameplay capture, FFmpeg system and upload connection must sustain it. Avoid converting a 30 fps capture to 60 fps without a reason; it does not create genuine extra captured motion.

Setting 1080p30 1080p60
Dimensions 1920×1080 1920×1080
Frame rate 30 fps 60 fps
Video codec H.264 H.264
Video bitrate 14 Mbps recommended; 5 Mbps minimum 17 Mbps recommended; 6 Mbps minimum
Rate control CBR CBR
Keyframe interval 2 seconds (60 frames) 2 seconds (120 frames)
Ingest RTMPS preferred RTMPS preferred

These are YouTube’s published H.264 ingest recommendations; the page does not display a publication year. Minimum bitrates are not quality guarantees. Leave upload headroom for audio and connection variation rather than treating the video bitrate as the entire required upload capacity. YouTube recommends choosing a quality suitable for your connection and checking upload speed. YouTube’s live encoder settings list the supported settings and advanced recommendations.

Get the YouTube stream URL and key

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the stream you intend to use.
  2. Copy the ingest URL and stream key shown for that stream into your FFmpeg configuration. Use RTMPS if the endpoint and your FFmpeg build support it.
  3. Keep the key private. It authorizes an encoder to send a feed to your stream. Do not put it in screenshots, public examples, logs or shell history. If someone obtains it, an authorized channel owner or manager can reset it; update your encoder with the replacement key. See YouTube’s guidance on streaming with an encoder.

Configure FFmpeg for 1080p output

In your FFmpeg command or encoder configuration, set the output frame size to 1920×1080, choose 30 or 60 fps to match the captured game, select an H.264 encoder available in your build, use CBR at the corresponding recommended bitrate, and set the GOP/keyframe spacing to two seconds. Configure audio with a supported encoder and include the RTMPS output URL and private key using the format accepted by your endpoint and FFmpeg build.

There is no single copy-paste command that can be confirmed for every FFmpeg version, H.264 encoder, capture input and YouTube endpoint. FFmpeg option names and output URL syntax depend on those details. Check the installed version’s documentation and inspect its available encoders before adapting a command. The YouTube specifications establish the ingest targets, not a universally tested FFmpeg command.

Keyframe timing in practice

A two-second interval means 60 frames at 30 fps or 120 frames at 60 fps. YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds. Use a fixed frame rate if you are setting a GOP length in frames so that the intended time interval remains predictable.

Optional advanced video and audio settings

YouTube’s advanced recommendations include square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, Rec. 709 for SDR, and 8-bit SDR. For audio, it lists stereo AAC at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz; it also supports MP3. For 5.1 audio over RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists AAC at 48 kHz and 384 Kbps. Treat these as advanced specifications, separate from the core resolution, bitrate, protocol and keyframe choices.

Set resolution selection in Live Control Room

YouTube detects encoder settings automatically by default. If you need to choose the resolution manually, create a custom stream key and enable manual settings under Stream Resolution in Live Control Room. YouTube transcodes the incoming feed into viewer formats, so the settings here govern what you send to YouTube; they do not guarantee that every viewer immediately sees a 1080p playback option. YouTube explains its ingest and transcoding workflow.

Test before the gaming broadcast

  1. Start a private or otherwise appropriate test stream using the intended resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval and audio.
  2. Use representative gameplay motion and audio; a static screen is not a useful test of a demanding game capture.
  3. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health messages. Confirm that the ingest is stable and that audio is present before announcing or relying on the broadcast.
  4. During the event, continue watching stream health and messages so you can respond to drops or encoder warnings. YouTube advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” See encoder setup guidance and YouTube live-streaming tips.

Why a stream may not appear in 1080p

  • The encoder is sending a lower resolution: check the FFmpeg output frame size and the Live Control Room preview. A 1080p title or game capture does not by itself mean the encoded output is 1920×1080.
  • Automatic detection selected another setting: verify the encoder’s actual output. If manual resolution selection is required, use a custom stream key and enable manual settings under Stream Resolution.
  • The stream is unstable or overloaded: check encoder warnings and connection health. Confirm the machine can sustain the chosen frame rate and encoding load, and that upload capacity is appropriate for the stream.
  • YouTube playback renditions are still being generated: YouTube transcodes the incoming stream for playback. The ingest format you send and the playback options viewers see are related but not identical.

Copyright and gaming VOD considerations

FFmpeg settings determine the encoded stream, not whether the footage or audio is permitted on YouTube. Before looping or broadcasting recorded gameplay, make sure you have the necessary rights for the game footage, music, overlays and other included material, and follow YouTube’s applicable live-streaming and channel policies. Re-encoding or changing resolution does not grant permission to use copyrighted material.

Or let it run in the cloud

If this is a prerecorded gaming VOD you want to keep live on YouTube, StreamNeo is an alternative to maintaining an FFmpeg process on your own computer. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera.
