The difficult part is not starting the feed; it is keeping the server, network, file, and encoder healthy while respecting game and music rights. This guide covers the setup, the YouTube settings to use, continuous-operation planning, and the limits on monetization and replay archives.
Before you set up the server
- Your YouTube channel must be verified and have no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. Enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours. YouTube says streamers must be at least 16 years old. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- Confirm that you have permission to broadcast the game footage and any music in the VOD. Technical access to YouTube Live does not grant those rights.
- Check the VOD’s resolution, frame rate, video and audio codecs, and whether it contains both audio and video tracks. The right encoder settings depend on those properties and on the Linux host’s capabilities.
- Check that the server’s sustained upload capacity can support your chosen bitrate with room for network variation. YouTube’s bitrate recommendations are encoder settings, not a guarantee that a particular server or connection will sustain them.
Create the YouTube Live event and get its credentials
- Sign in to YouTube Studio and open the Live Control Room. Create or select a stream event for the broadcast.
- In the event’s encoder settings, copy the YouTube ingest server URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder setup guide documents this URL-and-key workflow.
- Configure the Linux encoder to send its output to that server URL using the stream key. Treat the key like a password: keep it out of public scripts, repositories, screenshots, and shared logs. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
Choose a bitrate and encoding settings
Use a target that both fits YouTube’s guidance for your output and remains below the server’s reliably tested upload capacity. YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations include these encoder video bitrates:

These figures are for the video encoder, not total connection use; audio and network overhead also consume capacity. YouTube’s recommendations differ for AV1 and H.265, so use the current encoder settings and bitrate table for the codec and resolution you choose.
- Transport: Prefer RTMPS, which YouTube recommends for encrypted transport to and through Google’s servers.
- Rate control: Use constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: Set a keyframe interval of about two seconds and do not exceed four seconds.
- Video: YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance accepts H.264, H.265, or AV1 and supports up to 60 frames per second.
- Audio: Use AAC or MP3.
Do not assume that copying the VOD’s video and audio streams unchanged will work for every file: inspect its codecs and tracks first, then configure the encoder accordingly. An exact FFmpeg command depends on the input media and the host’s FFmpeg build and resources; verify any command against the file and installed build rather than treating a generic example as guaranteed.

Test the stream before leaving it unattended
- Start with a private or unlisted test event if that fits your publishing plan.
- Send representative portions of the VOD, including the busiest motion and loudest or quietest audio. Check that the picture is correctly framed, the audio is present and balanced, and playback remains smooth.
- Watch the Live Control Room’s stream health and alerts while the test runs. YouTube advises creators to test upload bitrate and monitor their stream; its recommendation is to run a speed test to test upload bitrate.
- Test what happens if the encoder or network connection drops, and confirm that your process can resume in the way you intend before relying on unattended operation.
Keep a Linux stream running continuously
A process that stays alive is not the same as a service that is reliably available around the clock. For a self-hosted setup, plan for the whole operating chain:
- Process recovery: Arrange for the encoder to restart after a crash and for the host to start it after a reboot. Check logs so a restart loop or repeated connection failure does not go unnoticed.
- Host and file availability: Keep the source file accessible, ensure sufficient disk space for logs and temporary files, and consider what happens during maintenance or a host outage.
- Network capacity: Confirm the sustained upload rate and watch for congestion or interruptions. A nominal bandwidth figure is not an uptime guarantee.
- Monitoring: Set up alerts or regular checks for encoder exit, stream health, and prolonged disconnection. Restart logic alone cannot tell you whether the event is actually delivering usable video and audio.
- India-specific hosting: The YouTube guidance cited here does not establish performance, pricing, bandwidth allocation, or uptime for any India-region VPS or provider. Check those details with the provider you select.
Understand rights, monetization, and the replay archive
Game footage and music rights
Check the game publisher’s commercial-use policy for the specific game, and check music rights separately. YouTube’s video game and software content guidance says monetization depends on publisher licensing and warns that extended gameplay without appropriate rights may not qualify. YouTube’s livestream terms also require the uploader to have the necessary rights, including relevant music rights, for live content.

Monetization is not automatic
A technically successful 24/7 loop is not a reliable monetization shortcut. YouTube says, “Videos simply showing a user playing a video game or the use of software for extended periods of time may not be accepted for monetization.” Commentary closely connected to the gameplay and offering instructional or educational value may be eligible, but eligibility is not guaranteed. YouTube’s channel monetization policies, including the July 15, 2025 clarification on inauthentic content, apply to live streams and require original, authentic content rather than repetitive or mass-produced uploads.
Do not rely on a complete 24-hour replay
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; its guidance does not promise a complete archive for a continuous stream longer than 12 hours. If retaining a replay matters, plan and test an event-segmentation and archive workflow instead of assuming one uninterrupted 24/7 event will be saved in full. YouTube does not specify an optimal segmentation schedule in the cited guidance. See its encoder streaming guidance.

Will a 24/7 Linux stream automatically restart after a server reboot?
Not by default; the operator must configure and test startup and recovery behavior for the encoder and host.
