Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo stream a vMix playlist to YouTube Live, create a vMix List input for a sequence of media files, or use vMix PlayList to sequence production inputs. Then connect vMix to the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio, start the encoder, and—if the YouTube event is scheduled—click Go live after its preview appears.
Choose between vMix List and PlayList
These features solve related but different playback needs. A List treats multiple media files as one vMix input. A PlayList sequences inputs in the production and can apply transitions between them. You can also place a List input inside a PlayList.
| Option | Use it for | Controls | Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| vMix List | Several media files played as one input | Auto Next, Loop, Randomise, disabled items, M3U import | Does not provide clock-based scheduling |
| vMix PlayList | A sequence of production inputs, including transitions | Loop, Manual Mode, start point, duration, transition and transition time | Does not provide clock-based scheduling |
| YouTube scheduled stream | Promoting a future live event with a scheduled watch page | Live Control Room preview and operator Go live step | YouTube still receives the encoder feed from vMix; the launch step is separate |
Use a List for a collection of files
Choose List when you want several video or audio files to play sequentially as one input. Enable Auto Next to advance through the files. Enable Loop to restart at the beginning after the final item. Randomise shuffles the order, and you can disable individual entries so they are skipped. Add files in the List editing window, drag and drop them, or import an M3U file. See the vMix List documentation.
Use PlayList for a sequence of production inputs
Choose PlayList when the items are vMix inputs and you want to control how the production moves between them. Add inputs from Available Inputs to PlayList, then set each item’s start position, duration, transition and transition time. PlayList can loop, begin at the selected item, or run in Manual Mode, where it waits for you to click Next. See the vMix PlayList documentation.

A List can hold many files as a single input rather than requiring every video to be loaded at once; vMix’s scheduling article says this can save system resources. For more elaborate sequences, use that List input within a PlayList. See vMix’s scheduling article.
Set up the YouTube stream in vMix
- Create or schedule the YouTube event. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a stream or schedule one. Copy its stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions cover this connection flow.
- Enter the connection details in vMix. Open Streaming Settings and enter the URL and key in the destination fields, or choose a YouTube destination if the installed vMix version offers one. The vMix Streaming Settings documentation recommends FFMPEG and documents H.264, AV1 or HEVC video and AAC audio support. Select settings that suit your production and available connection.
- Load and start playback. Start the media List or configured PlayList in vMix. Confirm that the intended input is in the production, then start streaming from vMix.
- Complete YouTube’s launch step when scheduled. Watch for the encoder preview in Live Control Room. Once it appears, click Go live. In an immediate encoder workflow, YouTube says starting the encoder brings the stream live.
- End the broadcast cleanly. For a scheduled event, click End Stream in Live Control Room and stop sending content from the encoder. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived and appear on the Live tab in Studio.
Protect the stream key
Treat the stream key like a password: do not reveal it in screenshots or public copy. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update vMix with the new key before streaming.

Match instructions to your installed version
vMix documentation pages may use different interface labels across versions. The references here span Help 26 and Help 28; if a label or destination differs, use the documentation matching your installed version rather than assuming every release has the same controls.
Understand what playlist automation does—and does not do
Auto Next, looping and PlayList sequencing automate playback order, but they do not start a broadcast at a specified time of day. vMix says it does not support time-of-day scheduling; its native List and PlayList tools provide basic back-to-back and looped playback, not a full clock-based broadcast schedule. The vMix scheduling article, last updated January 17, 2025, also describes a referenced third-party vMix Scheduler project as unmaintained, so it should not be treated as a reliable current solution without separate verification.

A YouTube scheduled event can promote a future watch page, but it does not remove the need to send the encoder feed from vMix. For a scheduled stream, an operator must still check the preview and click Go live.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
- The YouTube preview never appears: Confirm vMix is streaming, the selected destination uses the correct server URL and stream key, and the intended production input is playing. If you changed the key in YouTube Studio, update it in vMix.
- The stream starts but files do not advance: Check that Auto Next is enabled on the List. Confirm that the next entries are enabled rather than skipped.
- The sequence stops after its last file: Enable Loop on the List if it should restart from the beginning. For a PlayList, check its loop setting.
- The sequence waits for an operator: PlayList may be in Manual Mode, which waits for a Next action. Change the mode if you want it to proceed automatically.
- A scheduled event has a preview but is not live: Click Go live in Live Control Room after confirming the preview. Starting vMix alone does not complete that separate scheduled-event launch step.
- You need playback to begin at a particular clock time: Native vMix List and PlayList controls do not provide time-of-day scheduling. Do not assume that a loop or YouTube scheduled watch page will schedule the vMix encoder to start.
- The stream will not end or archive as expected: End it in Live Control Room and stop the encoder feed. YouTube’s cited automatic archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps uploaded videos playing around the clock, StreamNeo is an alternative to operating a vMix computer continuously. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud. It does not stream from a camera.
