You can use VLC’s VideoLAN Manager (VLM) to sequence playlist items on a Raspberry Pi, and YouTube Live can receive a compatible encoder feed over RTMPS. But the documented VLC playlist example outputs a local HTTP stream; it does not establish that a Raspberry Pi VLC build can send that playlist directly to YouTube. To go live, first prepare and test the playlist, then use an encoder setup verified to accept its output and deliver it to YouTube over RTMPS.

What this setup can—and cannot—be assumed to do

VLC’s VLM feature can sequence multiple inputs on one broadcast channel. VideoLAN’s documented example keeps the output running between items and serves an MPEG transport stream over HTTP. YouTube’s documented live workflow uses a compatible encoder, an RTMPS ingestion URL, and a stream key. These are documented capabilities separately; the official documentation cited here does not verify a direct VLC-to-YouTube RTMPS command or an end-to-end bridge configuration for a Raspberry Pi.

Accordingly, treat the VLM configuration below as a playlist and local-stream building block, not as a complete YouTube connection. The handoff from VLC to the encoder must be checked for the specific software versions and Pi in use. No particular Pi model, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, or 24/7 reliability level is established by the cited documentation.

sudo apt install --no-install-recommends vlc-bin vlc-plugin-base

For command-line use without a desktop, Raspberry Pi documentation shows VLC’s cvlc command. The documented hardware-acceleration note concerns VLC playback; it does not establish that a particular board can transcode a playlist or encode and deliver a live stream at a particular quality. See Raspberry Pi OS: Play audio and video.

Test the media and playlist locally first

  1. Put the media files on the Pi and confirm that VLC can open and play each file. Resolve missing-file, unsupported-format, or playback problems before configuring a live output.
  2. Use stable file paths in the playlist configuration. For example, file:///home/pi/media/one.mp3 refers to a local file; change the path and filenames to match your Pi.
  3. Test the sequence locally before attempting a YouTube event. A playlist that works on one machine may still fail on the Pi if paths, permissions, or media support differ.

Use VLM to sequence playlist items

VideoLAN’s VLM example creates a broadcast channel, adds multiple inputs, sets an HTTP MPEG transport stream output, and starts playback. Its sout-keep option keeps the output from breaking when one item ends, while file-caching=1000 sets a caching option in that example.

setup channel_1 output #http{mux=ts,dst=:8090/stream}
setup channel_1 option sout-keep
setup channel_1 option file-caching=1000
control channel_1 play

Save the configuration as playlist.vlm and run the documented example with:

vlc --vlm-conf=playlist.vlm

For a headless session, use the command-line VLC executable available in your installation, commonly cvlc; confirm the VLM option works with that installed build rather than assuming every package version behaves identically. VideoLAN’s example lets a client on the network connect to http://<Pi-address>:8090/stream. That is a local/network HTTP output, not YouTube’s ingestion URL, and it cannot be pasted into YouTube Live Control Room. See VideoLAN’s VLM playlist example and its stream-output introduction.

Connect a compatible encoder to YouTube Live

Get the RTMPS URL and stream key

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or schedule the live stream.
  2. Open the stream settings and use the lock icon to reveal the RTMPS stream URL.
  3. Copy the RTMPS URL and the stream key into the compatible encoder that will send the feed to YouTube. Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your stream.
  4. Start with a private or otherwise controlled test before scheduling a public event. Confirm in YouTube Live Control Room that the encoder feed arrives and that the picture and audio are usable.

YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP carried over TLS/SSL. The encoder must support RTMPS and accept the playlist output or an intermediate feed produced by the chosen setup. YouTube’s instructions do not validate a specific VLC-to-encoder handoff for this Pi workflow. If using a local HTTP, UDP, or other handoff, verify it with the selected encoder and software versions before relying on it. Consult YouTube’s RTMPS help and the YouTube RTMPS developer guide.

RTMPS versus HLS

HLS is another YouTube ingestion option for encoders that support it, including some cases involving HDR or codecs not supported by RTMP. It has specific requirements: TS format, 1–4 second segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency because it sends segments rather than one continuous stream. These requirements do not establish that VLC on Raspberry Pi can produce a suitable HLS feed. See YouTube’s HLS setup guidance.

Check copyright and live-stream readiness

  • Use media you own or have permission to broadcast. A playlist that plays locally is not automatically cleared for public live streaming.
  • Review YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream rules before broadcasting, especially if the playlist contains music, clips, or other third-party material. A stream key and a successful encoder connection do not grant content rights.
  • Test the complete chain, from playlist playback through the chosen encoder to YouTube’s incoming preview, before relying on it for an event.
  • Do not plan around a specific output quality or continuous uptime based only on the cited Raspberry Pi playback documentation; neither a model-specific encoding capacity nor the end-to-end configuration is verified here.

Troubleshooting

YouTube does not receive a signal

Check that the encoder has the RTMPS URL and stream key from the correct YouTube Live Control Room stream, and that its input is actually receiving the VLC output. The VLM example’s local URL is not a YouTube endpoint; a separate, compatible handoff is required.

The encoder reports an SSL or connection error

Verify that the URL uses the RTMPS scheme and the host supplied by YouTube, and that the selected encoder supports RTMPS. YouTube’s help suggests port 443 when needed. Its developer guide notes that the server hostname is required for TLS SNI authentication. Do not substitute the local Pi address or the VLM HTTP path for YouTube’s ingest URL.

The playlist stops or an item is missing

Check each configured file path and whether the Pi’s VLC installation can open the file. Confirm that VLM loaded the intended configuration and that the channel was started. The documented example uses sout-keep to keep its output from breaking between playlist items; it does not guarantee recovery from every playback, network, or encoder failure.

Playback works, but live output quality or stability is poor

Separate playback from encoding and delivery when diagnosing the problem. Raspberry Pi documentation confirms VLC availability and notes hardware acceleration, but does not specify the encoding capacity of a particular board or an appropriate stream bitrate, resolution, or frame rate for this chain. Test the actual Pi, files, encoder, and connection you intend to use; avoid assuming that successful local playback proves successful live encoding.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping on YouTube rather than to use the Pi as part of a DIY chain, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it plays your upload, not a camera feed. Every quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start your free day.
