Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteUse FFmpeg on the Raspberry Pi to read a video file from a mounted USB drive in real time and send that feed to YouTube Live. This is a live ingest of a local file—not a normal YouTube video upload. YouTube treats the incoming feed (a liveStream) separately from the viewer-facing event (a liveBroadcast).
The process is: enable livestreaming for your channel, copy the current RTMPS address and stream key from YouTube Studio, confirm the USB file is mounted and readable, then run an FFmpeg command. The command below is a template, not a guarantee that a particular Raspberry Pi can encode a particular file in real time.
What you need
- A Raspberry Pi with an operating system, FFmpeg installed, and network access to YouTube.
- A USB drive containing a video file that your installed FFmpeg can read. No camera, capture card, or microphone is needed for a prerecorded file.
- A YouTube channel that is permitted to livestream, plus the current ingestion address and stream key for the intended stream.
- Enough upload capacity for the outgoing stream. The appropriate output settings depend on the source, Pi, FFmpeg build, and network; there is no universally correct bitrate or Pi configuration established for this workflow.
YouTube may require channel verification or other eligibility steps before enabling live streaming. Check the current channel permissions in YouTube Studio. A stream key functions like a credential: keep it private, and do not put it in screenshots, public logs, or shell history.
Prepare the YouTube Live stream
- Open YouTube Studio and create or select the live event you intend to use.
- In the stream settings for that event, copy the current RTMPS ingestion address and stream key exactly as shown. YouTube’s assigned values and Studio interface can change, so do not rely on a hard-coded endpoint from an old guide.
- Keep the broadcast private or otherwise not public while you check that YouTube receives the feed. The incoming stream and the event viewers watch are separate YouTube concepts; the feed must be associated with the intended broadcast.
YouTube’s API describes ingestion details as the address and stream name for a live stream, and its documentation distinguishes that stream from a broadcast: liveStreams and liveBroadcasts.

Mount the USB drive and confirm the file path
Connect the drive and locate its mount point using the Raspberry Pi operating system’s file manager or command line. The mount path varies by OS and configuration, so do not assume one universal location. Before starting FFmpeg, verify the exact filename and that the Pi can read it. For example, if you have identified the path, check it with:
ls -l "/path/to/usb/video.mp4"
Replace the example with the path on your system. Keep quotation marks around a path that contains spaces. FFmpeg can read regular files, but it will not mount a removable drive or locate the file for you.

Check the FFmpeg build on the Pi
FFmpeg features vary by package and build. On the Raspberry Pi you plan to use, inspect the installed version, available encoders, and protocols:
ffmpeg -version
ffmpeg -encoders
ffmpeg -protocols
Confirm that the build supports the encoders and RTMPS output you plan to use. In particular, the example below uses libx264 for video and AAC for audio; those options may not be available in every build. FFmpeg’s official command-line documentation covers input files and option placement: FFmpeg command-line documentation.

Send the USB video to YouTube with FFmpeg
Use this as a starting template only. Replace the quoted input path and the output destination with the exact values for your setup. The destination is the current RTMPS ingestion address followed by the stream key, in the format YouTube provides for that stream. Do not share the completed command: it contains your key, and commands may be retained in shell history.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "/path/to/usb/video.mp4" \
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p \
-c:a aac -b:a 128k \
-f flv "<RTMPS_INGESTION_URL>/<STREAM_KEY>"
-rereads the file at its native rate instead of sending it as fast as possible.-stream_loop -1repeats the input indefinitely. Remove this option to play the file once; when the file ends, FFmpeg exits and the live ingest may stop.-iidentifies the input. Input options belong before their corresponding-i; output options belong before the output URL, which is the final argument.-c:v libx264and-c:a aacrequest video and audio encoding. The example’s codec, preset, pixel format, and audio bitrate are examples—not validated settings for every Pi or source file.-f flvselects the output container used in this RTMP/RTMPS-style command.
Choose resolution, frame rate, video bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio settings according to YouTube’s current encoder guidance and what the Pi and network can sustain. Do not assume the example will run in real time: performance depends on the Pi model, input resolution and codec, FFmpeg build, and available network capacity. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS, HLS, and DASH ingestion; RTMPS is the straightforward encrypted option for this workflow. Google describes it as “a regular RTMP (RealTime Messaging Protocol) video stream tunneled through an SSL connection.” See YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion guide.

For a single play-through, use the same command but omit -stream_loop -1. If the source’s audio and video codecs and container are suitable for YouTube’s ingest, stream-copy options such as -c:v copy -c:a copy may avoid re-encoding. Use stream copy only when the source is compatible; otherwise encode to supported output codecs.
Check the feed before going public
Start FFmpeg and look for incoming video and audio in YouTube’s live control room or preview. Confirm that the correct event is receiving the feed before making the broadcast public. If your goal is a one-time viewing event rather than a continuous channel, stop FFmpeg after the file’s intended play-through and manage the broadcast in YouTube Studio.

Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely causes | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube shows no incoming stream | Livestreaming is not enabled for the channel, or the ingestion address or key is incorrect. | Check channel eligibility and permissions, then copy the current address and key again from the intended stream’s settings. YouTube documents permission-related live-stream errors at Live Streaming API errors. |
| Connection fails or RTMPS cannot connect | Wrong endpoint, malformed destination, or network access to the required port is blocked. | Use the exact RTMPS endpoint YouTube currently gives you. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance requires a valid endpoint and port 443; verify that the Pi’s network permits the connection. |
| FFmpeg reports that an encoder or protocol is unavailable | The installed build lacks the requested encoder or RTMPS support. | Review ffmpeg -encoders and ffmpeg -protocols. Install or build an FFmpeg version with the required support, or change the command to options your build provides. |
| FFmpeg cannot open the input | The USB drive is not mounted, the path or filename is wrong, permissions prevent reading, or the file format is unsupported by the build. | Check the actual mount point and exact path, confirm read access, quote paths with spaces, and verify the installed FFmpeg can demux the file. |
| The picture stutters, falls behind, or FFmpeg cannot keep up | The Pi may not encode the selected resolution, codec, or frame rate in real time, or the network may not sustain the output. | Check FFmpeg’s output and YouTube’s preview. Reduce output demands or use a compatible stream-copy workflow if the source codecs are suitable. Do not treat a preset as proof that the Pi can sustain the workload. |
| The live feed stops when the video ends | The command is playing only one pass. | Add -stream_loop -1 before -i if continuous looping is intended; omit it when the stream should end with the file. |
| Video arrives but audio does not | The source may have no audio track, the selected audio encoder may be unavailable, or the output settings may not suit the source. | Check the input streams and FFmpeg log, then confirm AAC support or choose a compatible audio path. |
YouTube Live, copyright, and reused content
Sending a file through FFmpeg does not grant permission to broadcast it. Use video and audio you own or have permission to livestream, and check the applicable copyright rules before going live. YouTube can apply its policies to livestreams as well as uploaded videos. Separately, a technically valid stream does not guarantee that a channel will qualify for monetization: YouTube’s reused-content and monetization policies are distinct from whether FFmpeg can deliver the feed.
For a practical preflight, review this copyright safety checklist and YouTube’s current channel monetization policies.
