VLC can play a radio playlist, but the playlist alone does not make a YouTube Live broadcast. YouTube needs a compatible live audio/video stream sent through a supported ingest protocol. The available documentation does not confirm a current, reliable VLC-only workflow for sending that output to YouTube over RTMPS. Use VLC as the playlist source only if you have a separately verified encoder workflow; otherwise, choose an encoder whose current YouTube ingest support is documented.

What you need to stream a playlist to YouTube Live

Treat this as two separate jobs: VLC plays the audio source, and an encoder sends a compatible live stream to YouTube. VideoLAN says, “VLC is able to stream all that it can read,” and describes VLC’s ability to act as a server and client for network streams. That broad capability does not establish that a current VLC version can directly connect to YouTube Live’s RTMPS ingest. See VideoLAN’s streaming overview.

  • A radio playlist or other audio source that VLC can play.
  • A YouTube Live broadcast configured in your channel.
  • An encoder that can send a compatible live audio/video stream to YouTube using its current ingest requirements.
  • A video component if your setup requires audio and video together; do not assume a bare audio playlist will be accepted as a live broadcast.

A static M3U or PLS file is a list for ordinary playback, not a YouTube ingest stream. HLS ingest is a separate method with specific media-playlist and segment requirements; a normal radio playlist is not automatically a valid HLS ingest manifest.

Configure YouTube Live and protect the stream key

  1. Open YouTube Studio and configure a live stream for your channel. The exact interface can change, so follow YouTube’s current live-stream setup guidance.
  2. Copy the ingest details and stream key shown in the stream configuration into your compatible encoder. YouTube’s guidance recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP. See YouTube Help: encoder settings and YouTube Help: create a live stream.
  3. Keep the stream key private. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your broadcast. Do not publish it in a video, chat, screenshot, or public configuration file.
  4. Start the encoder and check the live control room for an incoming signal before you make the broadcast public or share it with viewers.

Match the encoder to YouTube’s requirements

YouTube’s encoder-settings guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 for video, and AAC or MP3 for audio. It calls for constant bitrate encoding and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum interval of four seconds. YouTube also recommends RTMPS for ingest. Confirm current settings against YouTube’s encoder settings before configuring a broadcast; supported options and requirements can change.

These are encoder requirements, not a VLC menu recipe. The documentation cited here does not verify a current VLC version, platform, or output configuration that directly sends a radio playlist to YouTube over RTMPS. Do not assume that selecting a network stream or an HTTP output in VLC is equivalent to a compatible YouTube ingest connection.

Use VLC for the playlist, but verify the complete output path

  1. Open the playlist in VLC and check that the intended station or tracks play correctly. If it is an internet-radio playlist, confirm that its source is reachable and that the playlist does not stop after a single item.
  2. Use VLC as the source only in a workflow whose current documentation explains how VLC’s audio reaches a compatible encoder. The encoder must produce the required live output and connect to YouTube using the ingest details from YouTube Studio.
  3. Before going live, test the entire chain: playlist audio, encoder input, audio/video output, YouTube ingest, and the preview in the live control room. Confirm that audio continues when the playlist advances or reconnects.
  4. Monitor the broadcast after it starts. A playlist can play locally while the encoder has lost its input, or an encoder can run while YouTube is no longer receiving the stream.

Because the direct VLC-to-YouTube RTMPS workflow is not established by the official sources cited here, this guide does not give a purported VLC-only click path or command. VLC’s general ability to stream media is not proof that a specific current combination of version, operating system, output settings, and YouTube ingest will work.

Check music rights and YouTube rules before broadcasting

Having access to an internet radio feed or audio file does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast it. Confirm that you have the rights needed for the music, recordings, and any other material in the playlist, and check YouTube’s current rules before starting a live broadcast. Do not treat a technically successful test as confirmation that the content is authorized or eligible to remain available.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • YouTube shows no incoming signal: Check that the encoder is running, its ingest destination and stream key match the current YouTube Studio configuration, and the selected protocol is supported. Keep the key private while correcting it.
  • VLC plays audio but YouTube receives nothing: Local playback confirms only that VLC can read the source. It does not confirm that audio is reaching a compatible encoder or that the encoder is sending a supported live output.
  • The stream connects but has no usable picture: A radio playlist is audio; verify that your encoder’s output satisfies YouTube’s live audio/video setup rather than assuming audio alone is sufficient.
  • The broadcast stops when a track or station changes: Check playlist continuity and whether the source reconnects, then verify that the encoder continues to receive input through the transition.
  • An HLS playlist is rejected: Ordinary M3U or PLS playback lists are not necessarily valid HLS ingest manifests. Check the specific HLS playlist and segment requirements in YouTube’s HLS ingest guidance.
  • The stream works in one setup but not another: VLC output support and YouTube’s ingest requirements can vary with software version, platform, and configuration. Verify the exact current documentation for the versions and operating system you use rather than transferring settings from an unrelated setup.
