Create a vertical live stream in YouTube Studio, send the matching vertical feed to its stream key through an encoder, and check the preview before going live. This is a live broadcast—not an uploaded Short—and scheduled streams and Premieres do not appear in the vertical live feed.
What “YouTube Shorts live stream” means
YouTube’s vertical live experience can surface vertical live streams while people browse Shorts in the YouTube app. It is not the same as uploading a finished Short: your video is delivered as a live broadcast through YouTube Live. The vertical live feed is available in the YouTube app, not on tablets. Scheduled live streams and Premieres are excluded from that feed. YouTube Help: Watch & interact with vertical live streams on the YouTube app
For the feed opportunity, the stream must be vertical. A standard horizontal live broadcast does not become a vertical one simply because its source file is portrait. In a third-party encoder’s dual-stream setup, YouTube uses separate keys for the horizontal and vertical outputs; send each format to its corresponding key.
Check channel eligibility first
- Your channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days.
- You must be at least 16 years old to live stream.
- If this is your first time enabling live streaming, activation can take up to 24 hours. Enable it before the day you plan to broadcast.
Confirm eligibility and activation in YouTube Studio before preparing the encoder. See YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.

Prepare a vertical prerecorded video
Use a portrait source and configure the encoder output as vertical. Check the resulting picture in the Live Control Room preview: the subject should remain visible in the portrait frame, and the audio should play as expected. If you intend to send both portrait and landscape versions, prepare both outputs before starting and map each to its own stream key.
YouTube’s guidance does not prescribe a particular encoder program for looping a prerecorded file. The encoder needs to be able to send the video and audio to YouTube using the server URL and stream key; the controls for loading or looping a file vary by software. Do not assume that a scheduled event or Premiere will qualify for the vertical live feed.

Configure YouTube Live and the encoder
- Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live, then create or select a stream and choose the encoder workflow. For the full setup, see YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Copy the connection details. Copy the YouTube Live server URL and the stream key into the matching fields in your encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not show it in screenshots or share it publicly. If it is exposed, reset it through Live Control Room and update the encoder.
- Set up vertical output before starting. If using dual-stream output, choose RTMP(S) in Live Control Room, select the second stream key for the vertical output, and route the vertical feed to that key. Route any horizontal feed to its horizontal key. YouTube says a vertical format cannot be added to this dual-stream setup after the stream has started. YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming
- Choose compatible encoding settings. YouTube lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant bitrate (CBR). Its recommended keyframe interval is two seconds and it should not exceed four seconds. Use RTMPS where supported. Choose a bitrate that your upload connection can sustain. See YouTube’s encoder instructions and live encoder settings guidance.
- Start the encoder and verify the preview. Send the feed, then check the Live Control Room preview and stream health. For a scheduled event, wait until the preview appears and confirm the picture and sound before clicking Go live.
- End the event cleanly. Stop the encoder when you are finished. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived.
Preflight checklist: picture, sound, and bandwidth
- Confirm the source and encoder output are portrait, and that the correct vertical stream key is selected.
- Check the preview for framing, motion, and audio before making the stream public.
- Verify that the encoder is using an accepted video and audio codec, CBR, and a keyframe interval of no more than four seconds.
- Make sure your upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate. YouTube recommends a 20% bandwidth margin; for example, allow extra capacity above the bitrate rather than planning to use the connection’s full measured upload rate. See YouTube Help: Streaming tips.
- Use content you have the right to broadcast. Copyrighted music, video, or other material can lead to claims or stream restrictions; a prerecorded format does not exempt a broadcast from YouTube’s rules. Review YouTube’s current live-streaming guidance and applicable copyright requirements before going live.
Local encoder or cloud streaming?
A local encoder gives you direct control over playback and encoding, but you operate and monitor the machine and connection sending the stream. For a continuous prerecorded broadcast, a cloud service can keep the playback running without leaving a home computer on. YouTube’s encoder listing identifies Gyre as a cloud-based option for 24/7 prerecorded-video live streaming; verify its current features, terms, and pricing with the provider before choosing it.
