To stream a prerecorded MP4 through OBS to YouTube, add it as a Media Source, confirm its audio is routed to the stream, and test before going live. If you hear crackling, diagnose it in stages: compare local playback with OBS and the received stream, check OBS’s low-latency audio buffering option and audio settings, then distinguish a file-specific problem from dropped frames caused by a connection or bitrate the connection cannot sustain. No single setting is established as a universal cure.
Set up the MP4 in OBS
- Add the source: In the scene you intend to stream, select Sources → + → Media Source, name it, then choose the local MP4 file. OBS lists MP4 among its supported video files. The Media Source offers playback controls including looping and restarting when the source becomes active.
- Set playback behavior: Enable looping if you want the video to repeat, and choose whether it should restart when activated based on how the scene is used. Leave hardware decoding off for the first test; it uses the GPU decoder when available, and can be tested later as a separate change if needed.
- Check audio routing: During playback, look for the Media Source in the OBS Audio Mixer and confirm its level responds. Open Edit → Advanced Audio Properties and check that the source is assigned to the audio track used by your stream. If you want to hear the MP4 locally, configure audio monitoring deliberately and verify the selected monitoring device.
- Connect OBS to YouTube: In YouTube Studio, create or open the live stream and retrieve its stream key. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube as the service, and connect the account or enter the stream key. Keep the key private. Start the OBS stream only when the YouTube broadcast is ready; verify the preview and audio before making the broadcast public.
OBS menu wording can vary between versions. The audio-routing checks above are practical checks, not a claim that every OBS version routes every source to the same track by default.
Choose Media Source or VLC Video

These are separate OBS source types. For one local MP4, Media Source avoids the extra VLC dependency.
Diagnose crackling without guessing
Change one setting at a time and replay the same section after each change. This helps identify whether the symptom follows the file, OBS’s local playback, or delivery to YouTube.

1. Compare where the crackling occurs
- Play the MP4 in an ordinary media player. If it crackles there too, the issue may be in the file or its audio encoding rather than YouTube delivery.
- Play it through the OBS scene and watch the Audio Mixer. If the mixer level responds but the preview or local monitoring sounds wrong, check routing and the monitoring device.
- Listen to the resulting YouTube stream or its recording, if available. If local playback sounds clean but the received stream does not, investigate the OBS stream path and connection separately.
- Try a second known-good local video in the same scene. If only one MP4 crackles, inspect that file’s actual audio codec and encoding. MP4 is a container, not a guarantee of one particular audio codec; the extension alone cannot identify the cause.
2. Check low-latency audio buffering
Find OBS’s low-latency audio buffering option in the relevant audio-source or device settings. OBS’s official warning says: “Low latency audio buffering mode may cause audio to glitch or stop playing from some sources.” If the option is enabled, disable it unless your setup specifically requires it, then retest. This is a documented troubleshooting lead, not a guaranteed fix for every crackling problem.
3. Review sample rate and audio devices
In Settings → Audio, review the sampling rate and selected audio devices. Compare them with the relevant operating-system or hardware device settings. OBS’s overview guide recommends leaving defaults in place unless there is a reason to change them. Crackling by itself does not prove that a sample-rate or device mismatch exists.

4. Separate connection trouble from audio-source trouble
Watch OBS’s dropped-frame counter and connection indicator while streaming. OBS says rising dropped frames alongside a yellow or red connection state indicate an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. OBS drops frames to avoid buffering and keep the stream playing. That points to connection or bitrate capacity; it does not, by itself, establish the cause of crackling in the MP4 audio.
5. Test, then capture a log if it persists
Make a short private or unlisted YouTube test before the public stream. Listen both locally and to the received stream if available. If crackling remains, save an OBS log for support to inspect; a log is diagnostic information, not a fix on its own.

Check the MP4 rather than trusting its extension
OBS supports MP4, but MP4 files can contain different audio codecs and encoding combinations. If one file crackles while another plays cleanly in the same scene, inspect the problem file’s audio properties and compare playback in a normal media player. The available evidence does not identify the codec, sample rate, or encoding of your particular file, so do not infer those details from “.mp4” alone.
Copyright and YouTube live-stream checks
Before broadcasting, make sure you have the rights or permissions needed for every video and audio element in the recording. A prerecorded file can still trigger copyright claims or other YouTube enforcement. Also consider whether the channel’s overall content complies with YouTube’s policies; simply playing a file live does not make it original or resolve rights issues. Test privately or unlisted first, and review YouTube Studio’s stream status and any notices before sharing the broadcast.
