To stream a local prerecorded video to YouTube Live on Linux Mint, add it to an OBS scene with a Media Source, set the playback and encoder options, connect OBS to a YouTube Live event with its stream URL and key, then check the preview before going live. OBS can play and loop a local video; you do not need a separate player or hardware encoder for this workflow.
Before you start
- Install OBS Studio using a source appropriate for your Linux Mint version. OBS recommends Flathub for non-Ubuntu distributions. Its Linux installation page, dated 2021-08-26, gives PPA instructions specifically for Ubuntu, so do not assume older Ubuntu commands are right for every Mint release. OBS says builds for other distributions are community-provided. See the OBS Linux installation instructions.
- Have the video file available locally and know whether you want one play-through or continuous looping.
- Make sure your YouTube channel can livestream. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before the day of the stream. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup requirements and encoder setup guidance.
Prepare the video in OBS
Create a scene and add the file
- Open OBS and create or select a scene in the Scenes panel.
- In Sources, select + and choose Media Source. Give it a clear name, then select the local video file in its properties.
- Use the preview canvas to position and size the video. Check that the source is visible and that the picture is not cropped or letterboxed in an unintended way.
- Play the source and check the OBS audio mixer. Confirm that the file’s sound is audible and that the meter responds.
OBS documents Media Source support on Linux for video types including .mp4, .ts, .mov, .flv, .mkv, .avi, .gif and .webm. A listed file extension does not guarantee that every file encoded in that container will decode on every Mint installation. Choose whether it plays once, repeats, or uses a playlist
- One pass: leave Loop off in the Media Source properties.
- Repeat one video: enable Loop. The source restarts when playback reaches the end.
- Playlist: use OBS’s VLC Video source and add the files in the order you want. VLC must be installed; OBS notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. For one local file, the built-in Media Source is sufficient.
Set up the YouTube Live event and connect OBS
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the stream event. If it is scheduled, confirm you are setting up the intended event.
- Copy the event’s stream URL and stream key from YouTube’s encoder setup.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Select YouTube or the custom-service option as appropriate for the OBS version and enter the server URL and stream key from the event. OBS and YouTube labels can change; use the current event’s encoder details rather than an old saved key.
- Keep the stream key private. It is a credential that routes the encoder feed to your YouTube event; do not show it in a screen capture or publish it. If exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio.

Choose encoder settings that fit your connection
For a standard SDR stream, YouTube recommends RTMPS, H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. YouTube Help describes RTMPS as a secure extension to RTMP. Its table recommends 2 Mbps video bitrate for 720p at 30 fps. That is a starting recommendation, not a guarantee that your computer or network can sustain a stream.

Set the output resolution and frame rate to match the source and your measured upload capacity. In OBS these controls are generally in Settings > Video and Settings > Output; exact labels may vary by OBS version. Use CBR, H.264, and a two-second keyframe interval in the streaming encoder settings. Check YouTube’s current table before choosing a different resolution or frame rate: YouTube live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
YouTube recommends keeping total streaming bitrate within available upload bandwidth and leaving 20% headroom. Measure upload speed, not just download speed. If the upload connection is variable, reduce bitrate or output quality until the stream has room to remain stable. A wired connection can help with consistency when available, but it is not a requirement.

RTMPS is the ordinary choice for this workflow. HLS is a separate ingestion option for supported cases such as HDR or codecs RTMP does not support; it has higher latency and is not a default quality upgrade for a standard SDR prerecorded stream. See YouTube’s encoder guidance.
Test, start, and monitor the stream
- Test with representative audio and movement, rather than checking only a still frame or silence. Confirm that the video and audio appear as expected in the OBS preview and mixer.
- Start streaming in OBS so the encoder feed reaches YouTube. Open the event in the Live Control Room and wait for its preview and stream-health indicators.
- Check picture, sound, and health before selecting the event’s Go live control. For a scheduled broadcast, start the encoder well ahead of the scheduled time and monitor the event as it begins.
- Keep an eye on the stream throughout the broadcast. YouTube advises continuous monitoring of audio and video quality. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance and live-streaming tips.
End the broadcast cleanly
When finished, end the event in YouTube Studio and stop sending the encoder feed from OBS. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume that an event lasting longer will be archived automatically. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

Troubleshoot common problems
