You can keep a pre-recorded YouTube channel running by looping a local video with FFmpeg and having systemd restart FFmpeg if its process exits. You still need to create the YouTube Live stream, use the ingest URL and stream key shown in Studio, and verify the broadcast in Live Control Room: a running Linux service does not prove YouTube is receiving healthy video.

What you need before you start

  • A Linux machine or server that can stay powered on and connected to the internet, with the video file stored locally.
  • FFmpeg installed. Check the version and available build features with ffmpeg -version; options and codec support can vary by build.
  • A YouTube channel set up for live streaming and access to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
  • A compatible source file and a plan for its video and audio tracks. Stream-copying avoids re-encoding, but only works when the source tracks and output are compatible.

Before deploying, inspect the actual media rather than assuming every MP4 has the same codecs or audio layout. FFmpeg’s documentation is at https://ffmpeg.org/ffmpeg.html; consult documentation appropriate to the FFmpeg binary you installed.

Create the YouTube Live stream and protect its key

  1. Open YouTube Studio and create or select a stream in Live Control Room.
  2. Copy the ingest URL and stream key from that stream’s settings. Use the protocol and URL Studio provides; do not assume every stream uses the same endpoint.
  3. Keep the key private. Treat it like a password: do not publish it in a public unit file, documentation, terminal screenshot, or shared log.
  4. For a scheduled stream, start sending from FFmpeg and wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room before clicking Go live. Confirm the stream’s actual live state there.

YouTube’s encoder guide explains the connection and scheduled-stream flow: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Test a looping FFmpeg command

For a compatible local file and an RTMP ingest URL, this is a command shape to test, not a universal or verified recipe:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /srv/video/channel.mp4
  -c:v copy -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv 'rtmp://a.rtmp.youtube.com/live2/REPLACE_WITH_STREAM_KEY'

Replace the example file path and endpoint with your own. Avoid putting a real stream key in shell history or a script that others can read. The command uses -re to read the file at its natural playback rate. The -stream_loop -1 option means repeat the input indefinitely, and belongs before that input’s -i.

When stream copy works—and when it does not

-c:v copy sends the source video track without re-encoding. It is efficient, but it is not a format conversion: if the source’s encoded tracks or container/output combination are incompatible with the selected ingest, the stream may fail or be rejected. The example encodes audio as AAC; it assumes the input has an audio track. If it does not, decide on an audio plan and validate it against the source and current YouTube requirements instead of blindly using this command.

If stream copy is unsuitable, transcode the media and choose a supported video and audio codec, pixel format, bitrate, frame rate, and keyframe interval using YouTube’s current encoder guidance and the settings shown in Studio. Those values depend on the source and stream configuration; this workflow does not establish one set of parameters for every file or channel. Test the resulting feed in Studio before relying on it.

Looping a sequence of videos

For multiple clips, prepare and validate a playlist or media input before deployment. A concatenated file can be one approach, but clips with different codecs, frame rates, durations, or audio layouts may not join cleanly. Test transitions locally and check timestamp continuity; do not assume a playlist that works for one collection is valid for every collection.

Run FFmpeg under systemd

Use a system service that keeps FFmpeg in the foreground. That lets systemd track the encoder process and restart it after an exit. The following is a template to adapt and validate on your Linux distribution; exact directives can vary with the installed systemd version.

[Unit]
Description=YouTube FFmpeg stream
After=network-online.target
Wants=network-online.target

[Service]
Type=simple
User=streamer
WorkingDirectory=/srv/video
EnvironmentFile=/etc/ffmpeg-youtube.env
ExecStart=/usr/bin/ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /srv/video/channel.mp4 -c:v copy -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -f flv ${YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL}/${YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY}
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=10

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target

This example illustrates foreground supervision, not a drop-in unit for every host. Confirm FFmpeg’s installed path, the service user’s access to the media, the exact URL format Studio supplies, and whether the chosen command suits the source. Protect the environment file containing the key with restrictive permissions and give the service account only the access it needs. Do not place the key in a world-readable unit file.

Install, enable, and inspect the service

  1. Save the unit as /etc/systemd/system/ffmpeg-youtube.service, adapting paths, account, environment variables, and command.
  2. Reload systemd’s unit definitions: sudo systemctl daemon-reload.
  3. Start the service: sudo systemctl start ffmpeg-youtube.service.
  4. Check its local process state: sudo systemctl status ffmpeg-youtube.service.
  5. Enable it at boot: sudo systemctl enable ffmpeg-youtube.service.
  6. Review diagnostics: sudo journalctl -u ffmpeg-youtube.service. Add -f to follow new entries while diagnosing a running service.

Test with a safe stream before leaving the service unattended. A restart policy is useful for process exits, but avoid a rapid retry cycle: repeated restarts cannot fix a bad key, missing file, unsupported codec, exhausted disk, unavailable network, or YouTube-side event state.

Verify the broadcast separately from the process

After starting FFmpeg, check two independent things: whether the process is alive and whether YouTube is receiving a valid feed. Use systemctl status and the service journal for the first; use the incoming preview and live status in YouTube Live Control Room for the second. If a scheduled event requires it, click Go live after the preview appears. A service can remain active while sending unusable media or failing to establish a valid broadcast.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If unattended viewer-facing availability matters, add an external check or alert. Local process state alone does not establish that the public, private, or unlisted YouTube broadcast is playing successfully.

Choose the ingest protocol Studio provides

Do not reuse an RTMP command unchanged for HLS. YouTube’s HLS guidance specifies a different ingest shape and constraints: the URL starts with HTTPS; ingest uses HTTPS POST/PUT; segments must be TS and 1–4 seconds long; and the rolling playlist must have at most five outstanding segments. HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends segments, and YouTube’s HLS-specific codec support includes HEVC as well as H.264. Follow the settings for the selected stream in Studio and see Set up an HLS stream.

Plan for long-running sessions and archives

YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A nominal 24/7 broadcast exceeds that duration, and the guidance does not guarantee one complete replay for a continuous event beyond the threshold. Decide how you will handle event/session boundaries and retain a separate source recording if a complete archive matters. Do not treat an uninterrupted encoder process as proof that one complete YouTube archive will exist.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause to check Next step
FFmpeg exits immediately Incorrect binary or media path, service-account permissions, invalid command, or unsupported input/output combination. Inspect journalctl -u ffmpeg-youtube.service, test the same command safely in a shell, and verify the file is readable by the service user.
The service is active but Studio shows no preview Wrong ingest URL or key, wrong protocol, network failure, or encoder output YouTube cannot accept. Compare the endpoint and protocol with Studio’s stream settings, check FFmpeg’s journal output, and confirm the feed in Live Control Room.
Video works but audio is absent or rejected The source may lack an audio track or use an incompatible audio layout or codec. Inspect the input’s tracks and set an audio plan that matches the source and current platform requirements; validate before deployment.
systemd keeps restarting FFmpeg A restart policy is retrying after an unresolved failure, such as a bad key, missing media, or unsupported format. Read the journal, correct the root cause, and use an appropriate restart delay rather than allowing a rapid retry loop.
The stream runs longer than expected but there is no complete replay The event exceeded YouTube’s under-12-hour automatic archive guidance. Plan session boundaries and keep a separate source recording when complete replay coverage is required.
An HLS feed fails with an RTMP-style command RTMP/FLV output does not implement HLS’s HTTPS, segment, playlist, and method requirements. Use the HLS-specific settings in Studio and satisfy YouTube’s HLS constraints rather than reusing an RTMP command.

Cost and operational trade-offs

Self-hosting means you supply the machine, power, network connection, and Linux administration. A home Linux computer, small computer, or rented VPS may serve as the host, but this workflow establishes no device compatibility, sustained operating result, hosting price, or reliability comparison. Consider your actual media and encoding workload before choosing hardware. A restart policy covers some process failures; it is not end-to-end monitoring.
