Use OBS Studio on your Mac mini to send a podcast playlist to YouTube: add a single episode as a Media Source or use OBS’s VLC Video source for multiple local files, then connect OBS to a YouTube encoder stream with its URL and key. Test playback, audio, and upload capacity before the broadcast; the steps below cover setup, stream settings, rights, and common fixes.

What you need before you start

  • A Mac mini with OBS Studio installed. The Mac mini generation, macOS version, and OBS version are not specified here, so check that your installed versions are compatible if a source or setting is unavailable.
  • Podcast episode files stored locally or otherwise accessible to OBS. The playlist workflow described here is for media files; it does not establish that arbitrary podcast-feed URLs work as a reliable playlist source.
  • VLC installed if you plan to use OBS’s VLC Video source. OBS documents that this source depends on VLC.
  • A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube’s current guidance says the channel must be verified and have had no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. YouTube live-streaming tips
  • Permission to broadcast every episode and all included music, clips, intros, and outros.

Prepare the podcast playlist and OBS scene

Choose the source for one episode or several

For one local episode, add an OBS Media Source. OBS documents support for common audio formats such as MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV, and video formats such as MP4, MOV, MKV, and WebM. For multiple files, add a VLC Video source, which supports a playlist, ordered playback, shuffle, and playlist looping. Install VLC if that source is missing. OBS media sources documentation

Set the visual and playback behavior

  1. In OBS, select the scene for the broadcast. Add artwork or another suitable visual source if viewers should see an image while listening.
  2. Add the episode as a Media Source, or add a VLC Video source and populate its playlist with the local files in the intended order.
  3. In the VLC source settings, decide whether to enable “Loop Playlist.” OBS documents loop as on by default and shuffle as off by default. Leave shuffle off for a fixed episode sequence.
  4. Test how playback behaves if you switch scenes. Confirm the source continues or stops as you intend; do not assume scene changes preserve the playlist state.
  5. Play the complete sequence, or enough of each file to verify that it opens and advances properly. Prepared local files are the predictable option; confirm the source’s behavior before relying on a feed link or unusual file type.

Create the YouTube encoder stream and connect OBS

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or schedule an encoder stream, as appropriate, and copy the stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe using these details to connect an encoder. YouTube encoder live-streaming instructions
  2. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service if available, and enter the stream key. If OBS asks for a server or stream URL, use the URL supplied by YouTube. YouTube recommends RTMPS in its encoder guidance. YouTube recommended encoder settings
  3. Treat the stream key like a password. It authorizes an encoder to send video to your channel; do not publish it or share it with people who should not control the stream.
  4. Return to the Live Control Room and confirm that the event is ready to receive the encoder feed before starting the broadcast.

Choose video, audio, and bandwidth settings

For a common standard-SDR H.264 stream at 1080p30, YouTube’s current encoder table recommends 10 Mbps video and 128 Kbps stereo audio. Its 720p30 recommendation is 5 Mbps video. These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular Mac mini or network will sustain the stream. Use the row matching your chosen resolution and frame rate. YouTube recommended encoder settings

Setting Guidance
Video codec H.264 for the standard SDR profile described by YouTube’s encoder guidance.
Rate control CBR.
Frame rate Up to 60 fps; select a profile your upload connection can sustain.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds.
1080p30 video bitrate 10 Mbps recommended by YouTube.
720p30 video bitrate 5 Mbps recommended by YouTube.
Stereo audio bitrate 128 Kbps recommended by YouTube; AAC or MP3 audio is listed.

Measure stable upload capacity during the time and on the connection you expect to use. YouTube recommends 20% bandwidth headroom beyond the stream bitrate; account for other devices and traffic using the same connection. If capacity is marginal or variable, use a lower resolution or bitrate profile and test it rather than relying on a brief speed-test peak. YouTube live-streaming tips

Test, go live, and monitor the broadcast

  1. Test with audio and movement similar to the actual event. Confirm the podcast is audible, the playlist advances, and the visual source appears as intended.
  2. Start the OBS encoder and check that the preview appears in YouTube’s Live Control Room. Review stream health and resolve warnings before announcing or relying on the event.
  3. YouTube recommends setting up at least 2 hours before the event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before a scheduled broadcast. These are preparation recommendations, not eligibility requirements. YouTube live-streaming tips
  4. During the broadcast, monitor audio and video quality and keep an eye on stream health. Stop the encoder in OBS when the broadcast is finished.

YouTube says encoder streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume an encoder stream lasting 12 hours or more will be archived automatically. YouTube encoder live-streaming instructions

Check copyright and broadcast rights first

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A detected match may replace the stream with a placeholder; if the material remains, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the broadcast. This can affect podcast episodes as well as music beds, intro and outro tracks, and clips. YouTube copyright and live-streaming guidance

  • Confirm that your permission covers livestreaming each episode and every included third-party element, not just making the recording available as a podcast.
  • If you have licensed material, ask the rights owner whether your channel must be added to its Content ID allowlist, and arrange that before going live. A licence alone may not prevent an automated match.
  • Do not assume that crediting a rights owner or having access to a podcast feed is permission to rebroadcast its content.

Troubleshoot common problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
VLC Video source is unavailable in OBS VLC may not be installed, or the installed software versions may not work together. Install VLC and restart OBS. If the source is still missing, check compatibility for your macOS, OBS, and VLC versions.
A file will not play or the playlist will not advance The file may be inaccessible or in an unsupported or problematic format, or the playlist may be configured incorrectly. Test each file locally, confirm its path and format, and rebuild the VLC playlist with accessible local files in the intended order.
The stream does not appear in YouTube The encoder may be using the wrong server URL or key, or the event may not be ready in Live Control Room. Compare the OBS stream settings with the current values in YouTube Studio. Keep the key private; reset it in YouTube if you believe it was exposed.
Video stutters or stream health is poor The upload connection may not sustain the selected bitrate, or other traffic may be consuming capacity. Check stable upload capacity and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Reduce the video profile if necessary and test again.
Viewers hear no podcast audio The media source may be muted, routed incorrectly, or the file may not be producing audio. Check the OBS audio mixer while the episode plays, confirm the source is not muted, and listen to the YouTube preview before going live.
The live stream is interrupted after a copyright match YouTube may have detected third-party content. Review the matched material and your rights. If licensed content is involved, ask the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting before restarting.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want a YouTube channel to keep playing uploaded podcast recordings without leaving the Mac mini on, StreamNeo is a cloud option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, not a live camera feed.

  • Nothing has to stay on at home; the stream runs from the cloud.
  • Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot rather than quality tiers.
  • Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card, one free day per account.

Monthly access is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for plan details, or start the free first day.
