To stream a podcast playlist on YouTube Live with FFmpeg, loop a still image as the video input, feed FFmpeg a compatible audio playlist, map the two streams, encode them for YouTube, and send the output to the ingest address shown in YouTube Live Control Room. You’ll need a verified channel that is eligible to stream, a supported FFmpeg build, and enough upload bandwidth. The command below is a template—not a universally validated command—so test it with your files and installed FFmpeg version before scheduling a long broadcast.

Prepare the audio playlist and cover image

Put the still image and audio files somewhere the computer running FFmpeg can access. For a playlist built with FFmpeg’s concat demuxer, create a plain-text file such as playlist.txt with one file entry per line:

file 'episode-01.mp3'
file 'episode-02.mp3'
file 'episode-03.mp3'

Use paths relative to the playlist file when practical. The concat demuxer expects the files to have the same streams, including compatible codecs and time bases; a mix of files with different layouts or properties may fail or produce timestamp problems. Normalize episodes to a common format before concatenating if needed, or choose another playlist approach that suits your files. Check the installed build’s options with ffmpeg -h demuxer=concat. FFmpeg’s format documentation describes the concat constraints and image input options: FFmpeg Formats Documentation.

Incorrectly reported durations can cause timestamp artifacts between files. If you hear gaps, overlaps, or abrupt transitions in a test, inspect the source durations and playlist structure rather than assuming YouTube caused the issue.

Set up YouTube Live

Open YouTube Live Control Room, configure the stream, and copy the ingest URL and stream key provided for it. Keep the key private: anyone who has it may be able to send a broadcast to your channel. Use the endpoint YouTube provides for the stream; its encoder guidance supports RTMP and RTMPS and recommends RTMPS because it encrypts the connection to Google’s servers.

YouTube’s current help guidance says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days to stream. It also says streamers must be at least 16. Eligibility and any additional account prompts are YouTube-side requirements, not FFmpeg command-line settings. Review YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance before configuring a broadcast.

Build and run the FFmpeg command

This schematic command uses a looping image input and a concat playlist, maps the image to video and playlist audio to audio, and sends an FLV stream to YouTube. Replace the filenames and endpoint/key placeholder with your own values. Do not paste a real stream key into a public script or share it.

ffmpeg
  -loop 1 -framerate 1 -i "cover-image.jpg"
  -re -f concat -safe 0 -i "playlist.txt"
  -map 0:v:0 -map 1:a:0
  -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -r 30 -g 60
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv "<YouTube RTMP(S) ingest URL>/<stream key>"

FFmpeg input options apply to the input that follows them, so -loop 1 is placed before the image’s -i. Confirm that your installed build supports the image loop option with ffmpeg -h demuxer=image2, and check that it supports the protocol for the RTMPS endpoint YouTube provides. The command is an illustrative starting point; validate it against your actual inputs and local FFmpeg build.

  • Positionable design: Pivot the mic in relation to the sound source to optimize your sound quality thanks to the adjustable desktop stand and track your voice in real time with no-latency monitoring
  • -re: reads the playlist at approximately its intended playback rate rather than consuming it as fast as possible.
  • -f concat: selects the concat demuxer for the playlist file.
  • -safe 0: relaxes concat path safety restrictions. Use it only with a playlist you control. If you can use safe relative paths, prefer the default instead.
  • -map 0:v:0 -map 1:a:0: selects the first video stream from input 0 (the image) and the first audio stream from input 1 (the playlist). If your input layout differs, mapping must change.
  • -r 30 -g 60: illustrates 30 frames per second with a 60-frame GOP, or a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends a two-second interval; set the GOP to roughly twice the frame rate you actually choose.
  • -b:a 128k -ar 44100: example AAC audio settings, not a required bitrate or sample rate for every podcast.

YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and a two-second keyframe interval. For a compatibility-oriented setup, this example uses H.264 and AAC. YouTube lists 5–14 Mbps as its recommended H.264 video bitrate range for 1080p at 30 fps; that is a platform recommendation, not a guarantee that a particular connection or source will work. Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to suit the stream and available upload bandwidth. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Test before broadcasting for hours

  1. Run a speed test and make sure upload capacity is adequate for the configured video bitrate, with room for network variation.
  2. Start FFmpeg with representative audio and the intended image, then check YouTube Live Control Room to confirm it recognizes the incoming stream.
  3. Listen through a transition between playlist items. Confirm audio remains continuous and the still image stays present.
  4. Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators before relying on the broadcast for a long event. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and video and monitoring stream health.

Troubleshoot common problems

  • YouTube does not detect an incoming stream: check that the stream is configured in Live Control Room, the correct endpoint and key are being used, the key has not been reset, and FFmpeg supports the selected RTMP or RTMPS protocol.
  • Concat errors or missing audio: confirm each playlist entry points to an accessible file and that the files have compatible stream layouts. Inspect the local concat demuxer help and normalize incompatible episodes.
  • Audio skips or timestamps jump at a track change: investigate mismatched or inaccurate source durations and differing stream time bases. Rebuild or normalize the playlist, then test the transition again.
  • Stream health is poor or the broadcast buffers: check upload bandwidth and lower the output bitrate or resolution if the connection cannot sustain the chosen settings. The 1080p30 figure is a recommendation range, not a minimum guarantee.
  • The image input or command option is rejected: consult ffmpeg -h demuxer=image2 and verify the installed FFmpeg version’s supported options and syntax.

Copyright and YouTube policy

Use podcast audio and artwork that you own or have permission to broadcast. A live stream can be interrupted or restricted if it includes material that violates rights or YouTube policy; a static image does not change those obligations. Before going live, review YouTube’s current rules and any rights or licensing terms that apply to music, guests, clips, and cover art. A playlist of previously recorded episodes is still subject to those rules.
